Over-Booked [97] – A Book Haul Post

Welcome to Over-Booked, where I share my latest and greatest book acquisitions! I’m linking up with Stacking the Shelves over at Tynga’s Reviews and The Sunday Post at The Caffeinated Book Reviewer.

First of all, in case you missed it on Instagram, two weeks ago I did this:

That’s the kanji for “book” (Hon), because I lived in Japan for a while, so it’s near and dear to my heart. And you know, books. And in case you’re wondering, yes it hurt like hell! But totally worth it:-D

Just a small physical pile of books to share this week, but for some reason I requested WAY too many books on NetGalley and now I’m truly “over-booked,” LOL. Here are the latest additions to my TBR:

Physical books received:

Starting at the top, I purchased this brick of a book from the Book Smugglers, an anthology of all the short stories they’ve published over the past few years under their publishing arm. I’m a big fan of theirs and when they announced they would no longer be involved in publishing, I wanted to have this anthology to remember them by. BUT. When I opened it up, OMG not only is the cover on upside down, but the pages have been bound backwards! It’s so weird, in all my years of buying books, I’ve never seen this before. Must be a mistake, right? I can’t even read it, I would have to read it Japanese style from back to front. I’m not sure I have the patience for that!

It’s a day of “lasts.” I also received my last print copy of Apex Magazine. They have gone to digital only, which is sad for collectors like me.

From Orbit Books, I received a lovely finished copy of How Long ‘Til Black Future Month? by N.K. Jemisin. Although this came out last November, I’m going to read it in February for Black History Month. Can’t wait!

My requested copy of Lake Silence by Anne Bishop arrived, and I’ve already started this. I hope to have a review up next week! Big thanks to Ace Books!

A surprise copy of The Loosening Skin by Aliya Whiteley came from Unsung Stories. They had sent me a digital copy, but I never expected this lovely surprise from the UK! Huge thanks to the publisher:-)

A couple of cool packages came unexpectedly! Isn’t that the best kind of package? From Big Honcho Media, I received a box full of promotional items for The Similars by Rebecca Hanover, including the book, a cool scarf and journal, and a cute compact mirror! Thank you Big Honcho Media!

And from Tor Books, I was NOT expecting this surprise. As thanks for participating in the #FearlessWomen campaign last summer, I received a Tor tote bag, a signed copy of Vengeful by V.E. Schwab (!!) and some very coveted Vicious/Vengeful character pins! Thank you Tor:-D

Digital books for review:

Recursion by Blake Crouch. I was a huge fan of Dark Matter, and it’s been a long wait for Crouch’s follow-up. I don’t really care what this is about, I just want to read it! Thank you Crown for the approval:-D

Murder Theory by Andrew Mayne. Mayne’s thriller series is so addictive, and I was so excited to FINALLY see the third book in the series pop up on NetGalley. And this actually comes out next month so it’s maybe third or fourth from the top of my pile at this point. Thanks to Thomas & Mercer!

Orange World by Karen Russell. Russell is a “pre blogging” author that I discovered, and I’ve devoured everything she publishes. This is her new short story collection and I’m so grateful to Knopf for approving my Edelweiss request. The last thing I read of hers was her last short story collection Vampires in the Lemon Grove way back in 2013, and I adored it.

Stoker’s Wilde by Stephen Hopstaken & Melissa Prusi. This sounds like a fun mash-up of Oscar Wilde and Bram Stoker, and honestly how could I NOT want to read this? Thank you Flame Tree Press!

House of Salt and Sorrows by Erin A. Craig. This is a retelling of The Twelve Dancing Princesses, and first of all, I couldn’t resist that cover. Second, this sounds very dark, so hopefully it’s my kind of book. Big thanks to Delacorte for the approval!

Finally, I agreed to read another Serial Box series called The Triangle, by Dan Koboldt, Mindy McGinnis and Sylvia Spruck Wrigley. I’m getting Lost vibes from this one, and it’s about the Burmuda Triangle, so I’m intrigued! Thank you Serial Box:-)

And that’s my haul this week. Are you planning to read any of these books?

  1. I love your tattoo – it’s beautiful!
And yes – the best packages are the most unexpected. How lovely that they sent you a signed copy of Vengeful for being a part of their campaign. Hope you enjoy!

  2. What a great tattoo – and so very perfect for you.
I love that cover for House of Salt and Sorrow and also just love the sound of a dark retelling of the fairytale of the 12 princesses.
    Great haul.
    Lynn 😀

Thanks Lynn:-) I’m very excited about House of Salt and Sorrows, and I do love looking at that cover:-)

  3. Your tattoo looks fantastic! I was tempted to get Recursion but I’ve been trying to avoid review books because I feel like I’m in the worst review writing slump ever. I wrote some mini reviews last night but they felt half-assed. lol Can one forget how to write a review? Here’s hoping not. Happy reading!

  4. I just pre-ordered a paperback copy of LAKE SILENCE (comes out next week) as I just got approved for an eARC of WILD COUNTRY! I love The Others series, the only thing stopping me from getting LAKE SILENCE sooner was I wanted a paperback to match the rest of my collection. 🙂 I’m going to get through both books in the next month, so it’ll be fun to compare notes!

Oh cool! So far I’m really enjoying Lake Silence. I just love the worldbuilding! I’m looking forward to your thoughts on both books:-)

  5. Nice tattoo, I originally thought it was Chinese (we have that character too, but the meaning is for the unit of a book – so still biblio related!) And that anthology has to be a binding mistake, right? I’ve never seen that either, did TBS mention anything special about the way the book would be printed? And I’m so excited about Murder Theory. I also hemmed and hawed over House of Salt and Sorrows …but that was before I learned it was a retelling of The Twelve Dancing Princesses. Now I’m fighting temptation again 😀

Japanese uses Chinese characters so that’s why it looks familiar! And yeah, that Book Smugglers book, I ended up sending them an email asking about it. I’m sure it’s a binding mistake, but wow, it was so expensive I’m sort of ticked off. I just want them to be aware if they aren’t already. Surely I’m not the only one who noticed?

    • Tammy

I emailed them about the book, which was really nice, and they are either going to send a new one or give me my money back. So strange!

  6. I think you are so brave! Actually it’s something I find absolutely unthinkable – I could no more have a tattoo than flap my wings and fly across the sea… But it does look really cool, Tammy. Love the look of your books! I still need to get to Dark Matter. I hope you really enjoy reading this haul – have a great week:)

Thanks Sarah! Dark Matter is really good, I highly recommend it if you’re in the mood for super fun and fast paced.

  7. That’s a great tattoo, And I bet it did hurt. Seems like a lot of magazines are going digital and I just don’t seem to enjoy them as much. I subscribe to three on my Kindle, Dark, Apex and one other I can’t recall and I rarely read them. Don’t know what I’m saving them for. They are more reasonably priced so I guess it’s a trade off. I grabbed that Jemison book on sale for my Kindle a few weeks bad. Can’t wait to see what you think.
