Future Fiction #2 – Cover Reveals & Newly Discovered SFF Books

Welcome to Future Fiction, my reimagining of the Waiting on Wednesday meme! There are so many amazing new books coming out, that I can no longer pick just one. My goal with Future Fiction is to share at least three new books each week, a combination of recent cover reveals and books that I’ve recently added to my TBR pile. I’m still going to be linking up with Wishful Endings/Can’t Wait Wednesday, and I also want to give a shout out to Jill at Breaking the Spine for starting the original Waiting on Wednesday meme. I hope you’ll find some new books to add to your TBR piles, and as always, I look forward to hearing what YOU’RE looking forward to:-D

New York is dying, and the one woman who can save it has smaller things on her mind.

It’s 1921, and a thirteen-mile fence running the length of Broadway splits the island of Manhattan, separating the prosperous Eastside from the Westside—an overgrown wasteland whose hostility to modern technology gives it the flavor of old New York. Thousands have disappeared here, and the respectable have fled, leaving behind the killers, thieves, poets, painters, drunks, and those too poor or desperate to leave.

It is a hellish landscape, and Gilda Carr proudly calls it home.

Slightly built, but with a will of iron, Gilda follows in the footsteps of her late father, a police detective turned private eye. Unlike that larger-than-life man, Gilda solves tiny mysteries: the impossible puzzles that keep us awake at night; the small riddles that destroy us; the questions that spoil marriages, ruin friendships, and curdle joy. Those tiny cases distract her from her grief, and the one impossible question she knows she can’t answer: “How did my father die?”

Yet on Gilda’s Westside, tiny mysteries end in blood—even the case of a missing white leather glove. Mrs. Copeland, a well-to-do Eastside housewife, hires Gilda to find it before her irascible merchant husband learns it is gone. When Gilda witnesses Mr. Copeland’s murder at a Westside pier, she finds herself sinking into a mire of bootlegging, smuggling, corruption—and an evil too dark to face.

All she wants is to find one dainty ladies’ glove. She doesn’t want to know why this merchant was on the wrong side of town—or why he was murdered in cold blood. But as she begins to see the connection between his murder, her father’s death, and the darkness plaguing the Westside, she faces the hard truth: she must save her city or die with it.

Introducing a truly remarkable female detective, Westside is a mystery steeped in the supernatural and shot through with gunfights, rotgut whiskey, and sizzling Dixieland jazz. Full of dazzling color, delightful twists, and truly thrilling action, it announces the arrival of a remarkable talent.

Westside by W.M. Akers. Releases in May 2019 from Harper Voyager. The blurb is rather long, but I think this story sounds fantastic! It’s got so many cool elements that could add up to something very unique: the Jazz Age, New York, mystery and the supernatural. And I have to admit, I’m eager to meet Gilda!

Ann Dávila Cardinal’s Five Midnights is a “wickedly thrilling” (William Alexander) novel based on the el Cuco myth, set against the backdrop of modern day Puerto Rico.

Five friends cursed. Five deadly fates. Five nights of retribución.

If Lupe Dávila and Javier Utierre can survive each other’s company, together they can solve a series of grisly murders sweeping though Puerto Rico. But the clues lead them out of the real world and into the realm of myths and legends. And if they want to catch the killer, they’ll have to step into the shadows to see what’s lurking there—murderer, or monster?

“A frightening, fast-paced thriller.” – Julianna Baggott, Alex Award-winning author of Pure.

Five Midnights by Ann Dávila Cardinal. Releases in June 2019 from Tor Teen. OK, this sounds so creepy! Or maybe it’s the monster on the cover that’s freaking me out. In any case, I’m excited to read a YA mystery/horror novel.

The Great War is over. The city of Lower Proszawa celebrates the peace with a decadence and carefree spirit as intense as the war’s horrifying despair. But this newfound hedonism—drugs and sex and endless parties—distracts from strange realities of everyday life: Intelligent automata taking jobs. Genetically engineered creatures that serve as pets and beasts of war. A theater where gruesome murders happen twice a day. And a new plague that even the ceaseless euphoria can’t mask.

Unlike others who live strictly for fun, Largo is an addict with ambitions. A bike messenger who grew up in the slums, he knows the city’s streets and its secrets intimately. His life seems set. He has a beautiful girlfriend, drugs, a chance at a promotion—and maybe, an opportunity for complete transformation: a contact among the elite who will set him on the course to lift himself up out of the streets.

But dreams can be a dangerous thing in a city whose mood is turning dark and inward. Others have a vision of life very different from Largo’s, and they will use any methods to secure control. And in behind it all, beyond the frivolity and chaos, the threat of new war always looms.

The Grand Dark by Richard Kadrey. Releases in June 2019 from Harper Voyager. I’m sorry to say I haven’t read anything by Kadrey before! But I’m going to change that and read his next book for sure. I absolutely love this cover, and the story sounds fantastic. This appears to be a standalone, so it might be a good place to start if you’re a Kadrey newbie as well.

And there you have it, three amazing sounding books coming out this spring/summer! Have you added these to your TBR yet? Let me know what you’re waiting on this week:-D

  1. You’re out to get my aren’t you? Seriously though, I’m loving your new feature. I think sometimes we all focus on the same books and it’s nice to get some variety, which you seem to be doing since you have three each week. I see you couldn’t resist posting the jellyfish roach (which was the popular opinion of the creature after my post last week). Westside sounds awesome. I read A Criminal Magic a few years ago and LOVED it. Ever since then I’ve been looking for similar titles. This one may be close and I’m definitely checking it out.

Yeah, the cover of The Grand Dark is pretty cool, plus I have a thing for upsidedown/sideways buildings on book covers, for some reason:-)

I agree, I always see the cover first, and then I read the story description, so that’s why these covers are all so fabulous:-)

  3. I haven’t heard of any of these, but I really like the cover of the 3rd one, but it doesn’t really sound like something I would enjoy haha
