Over-Booked [90] – A Book Haul Post

Welcome to Over-Booked, where I share my latest and greatest book acquisitions! I’m linking up with Stacking the Shelves over at Tynga’s Reviews and The Sunday Post at The Caffeinated Book Reviewer.

So, it’s been a month since my last book haul post, and here we are in September already! August was pretty busy for me, I went on a couple of short trips and the summer just whizzed by! I’m looking forward to things calming down soon, especially after I take my son back to school in a couple of weeks:-D

I have some new review books and purchases to share with you, so let’s get started:

Physical books for review:

Let’s start things off with this COOL promotional item from Orbit Books for Bloody Rose, which came out last week. It’s a cassette tape case with a download code for both the audio version of Bloody Rose and the soundtrack! Super cool, thanks Orbit!

A Winter’s Promise (The Mirror Visitor Book 1) by Christelle Dabos. This is interesting, this book was originally published in France to great acclaim. Think French Harry Potter. It’s being marketed for fans of His Dark Materials and N.K. Jemisin’s The Broken Earth series, so I’m very much looking forward to reading this. Big thanks to Europa Editions for the review copy!

The Night Crossing by Robert Masello also sounds really good. I was pitched this by the folks at Wunderkind PR and I just couldn’t say no. It’s a fictional story about famous author Bram Stoker and a dangerous adventure. Thank you Wunderkind and 47North!

Phoenix Unbound by Grace Draven. I’m very excited to read this fantasy romance, since I’ve read some awesome reviews from some fellow bloggers that I trust. Penguin Random House is also running a cool giveaway for this book, so check it out if you live in the U.S. Thank you to Berkley for the review copy:-D

Priest of Bones by Peter McLean. I was excited to get a surprise copy of this in the mail for review. I read one of McLean’s early books and really enjoyed it, so I’m curious to read something else by him. Thank you to Ace Books!

Little White Lies by Jennifer Lynne Barnes. I don’t read that many thrillers, but every time I read one I have so much fun! So I said “yes” when a publicist from Disney contacted me to review it. Barnes has written a BUNCH of books, has anyone read her before? I’m excited:-) Thank you Freeform/Disney!

Next up, a quartet of surprises:

Black City Dragon by Richard A. Knaak. Big thanks to Pyr for this copy of the third book in Knaak’s urban fantasy series. I feel bad that I haven’t read the first two books yet, but I hope to get to the series at some point.

Dare You to Lie by Amber Lynn Natusch. This was a surprise from Tor Teen and it’s being compared to Riverdale! That makes it more likely that I’ll try to read this.

Dry by Neal Shusterman and Jarrod Shusterman. I actually tried to nab this book at Comic Con but didn’t get it. So I was pretty excited when a copy showed up in the mail. Although there was no sell sheet attached so I’m not sure who sent it to me! But big thanks to Simon & Schuster! I believe Jarrod is Neal’s son, so I’m curious to read this father/son-penned story.

Stygian by Sherrilyn Kenyon. I’m getting confused with all of Kenyon’s series that are out there. This is #29 in her Dark-Hunter series, wow! I recently highlighted one of her books for the #FearlessWomen blog tour I participated in. She is so busy! I’d love to read this, but please tell me I don’t have to read the first 28 books in the series?? Thank you Tor!

Digital books for review:

I’m beyond excited to read M.R. Carey’s next book, Someone Like Me! This is a story about a woman with split personalities, and I just know Carey is going to do great things with that idea:-) Thank you Orbit!

The Binding by Bridget Collins sounds AMAZING. It’s a fantasy about books, so of course I’m going to want this:-) Thank you to William Morrow!

And last but not least, Dragonshadow by Elle Katharine White, book #2 in her Heartstone series. I loved Heartstone, especially the world-building, so I’m thrilled there is a sequel. Big thanks to Harper Voyager!

Purchased:

Since I’ve been having trouble downloading the digital review books from Tor.com, I’ve been on a mission to purchase all of the Murderbot books by Martha Wells, and here is Rogue Protocol! I have Exit Strategy on pre-order. In a few months I hope to have some down time to binge read the first four books in the series.

The latest issue of Apex Magazine showed up and wow it’s GORGEOUS.

Finally, I’ve decided to start purchasing books from one of my favorite independent bookstores (that I’ve never been in!), Parnassus Books in Nashville. I’m on their mailing list so I’ve promised myself that every time I get a newsletter with a showcased book that I’m interested in, I’m going to buy it from them. Severance by Ling Ma is the first (and I just ordered another book which I’ll share with you in my next haul). I’ve heard nothing but praise for this near future apocalyptic story.

And some good news!

Last month I showcased two Kickstarters that are now 100% funded! Do Not Go Quietly from Apex Books is now into some very cool stretch goals, and you still have ONE MORE DAY TO BACK THIS PROJECT! Seriously, you’ll be sorry later if you don’t.

Also, This Dreaming Isle from Unsung Stories has really surpassed their original goal and has hit all three stretch goals, I believe. You still have 14 DAYS LEFT TO CHECK IT OUT!

And that’s it for this week! I’d love to hear if you plan to read any of these books:-D

  1. Oh that’s a great haul. That cassette is too cool. I wonder if music stores even sell those anymore.
I’d love to read A Winter’s Promise. Can’t wait to see what you think of it. And also Severance. I recently added that to my TBR.

I’m very excited for Severance, I need to set aside some “non review book” time to read it soon:-)

  2. todd

I enjoyed Black City Saint, so I’d eventually like to catch up on the rest of that series. I like the look of The Night Crossing, nice cover and interesting premise. And I just added The Binding to my list, always looking for more good books about books.

  3. “Think French Harry Potter. It’s being marketed for fans of His Dark Materials and N.K. Jemisin’s The Broken Earth series” What?! How does one say no to that description?! My french isn’t what it used to be, but I might give it a go if not I’ll definitely be picking it up once it publishes in English.

  4. I got one of those Bloody Rose cassette tape boxes too, which I thought was pretty cool – haven’t seen one of those in a while! I haven’t downloaded the playlist yet though, I’m curious to know what’s on it. I also got an ARC of Little White Lies earlier in the summer and I know nothing about the author either, so this one should be fun for both of us to discover 😀

By the way, I was wondering, have you gotten any of your Orbit requests yet for September? I’m trying to be patient, but…Charmcaster! 😀

  5. Great haul. A couple on here that I would love to have and some I’m really looking forward to. Not seen A Winter’s Promise before – it sounds really good. Big shoes to fill though!
Can’t wait to read Dragon Shadow.
    Lynn 😀

  6. I just binge read the first three Murderbot books this past week (while I was supposed to be reading other things) and they are SO. GOOD. I can’t wait for October!

That cover for A Winter’s Promise is really intriguing, looks like it could be interesting.
I’m really excited for Phoenix Unbound!

  7. How exciting that you got the M.R.Carey book! Can’t wait to hear your thoughts. I want to read Dare You to Lie and Phoenix Unbound. I also got a copy of The Night Crossing. He wrote The Jekyll Revelation and I liked it well enough but I admit I have higher hopes for this one. I think I’ll make it an October read as I have an arc of Dracul to read that month too.

    • Tammy

I might read The Night Crossing in October as well, simply because I have way too many books planned already for September.

  8. Nice haul! I don’t know much about Phoenix Unbound, but it sounds interesting. I’ll have to keep an eye out for your review of it. As for me, the last two books I bought were The Kite Runner by Khaled Hosseini and The Hate U Give by Angie Thomas. I actually read THUG last year but had borrowed it from the library, so I decided it was finally time to add it to my bookshelves at home. 🙂

I loved The Kite Runner, and I can’t believe I haven’t read The Hate You Give yet, I must correct that soon!

  9. I can’t wait for Dragonshadow to come out!!! I loved Heartstone <3

And the cassette is super cool!!!! Was it just the case or did it have a cassette too?
