#FearlessWomen Blog Tour: CITY OF LIES by Sam Hawke

Welcome to this week’s #FearlessWomen post, where for the next several months, I’m celebrating the releases of some Tor Books Fearless Women authors! Today is an especially big day because I have not one but TWO #FearlessWomen books to share! First up is City of Lies by Sam Hawke! And in case you haven’t heard about #FearlessWomen yet, here’s what the campaign is about:

Women are shining in every genre of speculative fiction, and it is no longer enough to say “Women are here.” Instead, #FearlessWomen everywhere are taking a stand to say “Women will thrive here.”

Highlighting major titles from bestselling authors V.E. Schwab, Sherrilyn Kenyon, Jacqueline Carey as well as titles from acclaimed and debut authors such as Mary Robinette Kowal, Tessa Gratton, Sam Hawke, and Robyn Bennis, #FearlessWomen will be a coordinated social media celebration encouraging fans to start a dialogue about women in publishing, their worlds, their voices, and their unique stories.

Tor Books’ handles across Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram (@torbooks) will be using the hashtags #FearlessWomen (and #FearlessFantasy and #FearlessSF) to promote excerpts, exclusive content, quizzes and giveaways beginning in May. There will also be exclusive giveaways at BookCon, San Diego Comic-Con, and New York Comic Con. Follow Tor Books online, join the conversation – and get reading!

And now for my first highlighted book today, City of LiesCheck out the cover, read the story blurb, and don’t forget to read my exclusive excerpt from the book:

Poison. Treachery. Ancient spirits. Sieges. The Poison Wars begin now, with City of Lies, a fabulous epic fantasy debut by Sam Hawke

I was seven years old the first time my uncle poisoned me…

Outwardly, Jovan is the lifelong friend of the Chancellor’s charming, irresponsible Heir. Quiet. Forgettable. In secret, he’s a master of poisons and chemicals, trained to protect the Chancellor’s family from treachery. When the Chancellor succumbs to an unknown poison and an army lays siege to the city, Jovan and his sister Kalina must protect the Heir and save their city-state.

But treachery lurks in every corner, and the ancient spirits of the land are rising…and angry.

Exclusive excerpt:

I found myself caught between foes—my right arm entangled with one woman, our shortswords locked together, my left shoving back a man with an arm and a knee up on the edge of the parapet and a long knife in his free hand. I wavered, my attention split, panic choking me, until someone else shoved into the woman and knocked her away from me. I pulled my arm free and spun back, throwing my weight against my left forearm to tip the climber back over.

I was already turning to find another opponent when a sudden tug knocked me off my feet and my body was jerked like a puppet to the wall. My hip smashed into the stone and my feet bounced off the ground. Nausea, dizziness, then sheer terror took over; my attacker had latched on to my arm and dragged me with him, over the edge. Light and sky and stone and ground spun in my vision as I plummeted.

About the author:

A black belt in jujitsu, SAM HAWKE lives with her husband and children in Australia. CITY OF LIES is her first novel.

  1. I’m currently reading this and was hoping to get it finished before release day but unfortunately life got in the way. I’ve been enjoying it though.

  2. I’ve been hearing such a lot of good things about this book – and I love the cover – it’s awesome.

Hopefully it gives us a good idea of the tone of the story. So far I’m really intrigued!
