What’s On My Plate – July 2018

And in the blink of an eye, another month is over…July looks like it will be just as busy as June, as far as review commitments go. I also have two mini family vacations that will eat up a couple of weekends, which is when I do 90% of my blogging, so I don’t want to say you won’t see as many posts this month, but I’ll definitely have to spend more time planning ahead. I’m taking a quick trip to my favorite place in the world, Morro Bay, and we’re taking our dogs which is always fun (they love the beach!) And then, something unexpected happened which I’ll tell you about later! And of course, publishers just won’t slow down their publishing schedules so there are always more books to read than I have time for. Here is what I’ve got planned for July:

Books for Review – Most Anticipated:

European Travel for the Monstrous Gentlewoman by Theodora Goss. I absolutely loved the first book in the series (The Strange Case of the Alchemist’s Daughter) and I’ve been waiting for the sequel ever since I finished it. This book is looonngg for me, clocking in at over 700 pages, but I suspect they will fly by:-)

One of Us by Craig DiLouie. This story sounds gritty, it’s about orphans and monsters and, well, I’m not sure what else but I’ll be reading this very soon!

A Big Ship at the Edge of the Universe by Alex White. This is getting some great buzz, and even though it released in June, I’m excited to be able to read it, even a little late.

More awesome July releases that I can’t wait to read:
(obviously I won’t be able to read all these, so most likely some will spill over into August)

Spellslinger by Sebastien de Castell. This is just coming out in the U.S. – UK readers have had the pleasure of already starting this series, and I’m excited to check it out!

Kill the Farm Boy by Delilah S. Dawson & Kevin Hearne. I got an ARC of this book at Phoenix Comic Fest and now of course I HAVE to read it:-) Delilah Dawson was so cute and funny, I’m looking forward to checking out her work. Plus Kevin Hearne!

Hullmetal Girls by Emily Skrutskie. I really enjoyed the first Skrutskie book I read several years ago, The Abyss Surrounds Us, and I’ve heard great things about this.

Annex by Rich Larson. I just got a review copy of this and I couldn’t be more excited. I’ve read some awesome reviews on Goodreads already, and don’t you love the cover?

Dreadful Company (Dr. Greta Helsing #2) by Vivian Shaw. I’ll admit I wasn’t blown away by the first book, but it was enjoyable enough to want to continue the series.

Contagion by Eric Bowman. I’ve heard so many awesome things about Bowman’s other books, I’m excited to make this my first, especially since the ratings on Goodreads are really high:-D

The Unfortunates by Kim Liggett. This sounds different from Liggett’s other supernatural-toned stories, but I’m excited to see what she can do with the thriller genre.

City of Lies by Sam Hawke. Already getting lots of buzz and high ratings, this is one of the July #FearlessWomen book drops! I’ve read a couple of great reviews from fellow bloggers so I’m ready:-)

The Future is Blue by Catherynne M. Valente. My token short story anthology, I’m ready to dive into some Valente short fiction, especially since I struggled a little with her latest novel. And I’ve preordered this gorgeous book from Subterranean so I hope to receive it this month!

Planetside by Michael Mammay. I don’t remember requesting this, but nevertheless it’s in my downloads on Edelweiss! And checking out Goodreads, it’s got almost all five-star reviews, so I need to seriously consider reading it.

A couple of August releases I might not be able to wait for:

Yeah, I’m not sure I can wait until August for these two, so it’s highly likely a couple of July books will get bumped for Foundryside (Robert Bennett Jackson) and Bloody Rose (Nicholas Eames). One’s the start of a new series, and one is a sequel to one of my favorite books last year!

July Author Events and More:

Tomorrow don’t miss my fantastic interview with author K.D. Edwards, whose The Last Sun I recently gave a five-star review to! (the link to my review is below) And in addition, Pyr Books is allowing me to run a giveaway of the book, so check back tomorrow!

And drum roll please…I’ve been moaning about not being able to get San Diego Comic Con tickets for TWO YEARS in a row now, when out of the blue I found out that one of my daughter’s friend’s mothers (still with me?) runs a booth at the event and can get GUEST PASSES. This is a new concept for me. Long story short, she was kind enough to give us a couple of her guest passes and now my daughter and I will be attending. Honestly, I’ll believe it once I’m down in San Diego with tickets in hand! Stay tuned for more:-D

Finally, if you missed any of my June reviews, now’s your chance to check them out.

The Last Sun by K.D. Edwards

Royal Bastards by Andrew Shvarts

Before Mars by Emma Newman

The Mermaid by Christina Henry

Gate Crashers by Patrick S. Tomlinson (and I’m giving away a copy!)

Space Opera by Catherynne M. Valente

Aetherchrist by Kirk Jones

Are we planning on reading any of the same books? What are you looking forward to in July?

I feel pretty lucky to get tickets, and also a little guilty since I almost think it was too easy to get them. Oh well, of course I’m thrilled:-)

  1. I haven’t been to Morro Beach but I’ve seen pictures, it looks beautiful there. Have a great trip!

Hull Metal Girls and Contagion both look awesome!

    Congrats on SDCC!!

  2. Woohoo re:comic con!!

I hope you have a great time on your mini vacays. It sounds so great getting to take the dogs to the beach. I’m looking forward to your thoughts on the Valente collection!

It’s funny because I live in Southern California, but I only go to the beach about once a year. So sad…

It’s going to be hard to fit everything in. I mean for me, even fitting all these in during July AND August would be tough:-)

  3. When I recently saw One of Us compared to The Girl with all the Gifts I knew it would be one I’d have to add to my TBR (as if I need more), so look forward to hearing what you think about that one.
    Enjoy your reads 🙂

I just started One of Us and I love it already! It definitely has the feel of The Girl with All the Gifts, lots of similarities.

  4. I love the DeCastell books so far – very fun.
Well done with your comiccon passes – hope that turns out to be a great experience.
And, Foundryside, yes, I’m equally excited and might have to dive into that one early too,
    Lynn 😀

  5. Wow, that sounds like a busy but great month. Have fun at Comicon. I an anxious for at least half the books on your plate this month, especially contagion. Have a fun and wonderful month and how great that the pups are going to the beach!

    • Tammy

My dogs haven’t been to the beach in about three years so I’m excited for them (and me!)

  6. I’m reading The Future Is Blue right now!

I know what you mean about being busy. I’ve been running so behind on reviews lately…

Oh, and I’d love to see what you think about Annex. I’ve had a mixed experience with his short stories, so I was hoping a blogger I trust would pick his book up.

  7. Hooray for family vacation time! Dreadful company is pretty high up there on my TBR (I liked book 1 a lot more than you did!) and that cover art is giving me life. I have an ARC of Foundryside and it’s going to be my first RJB book…so excited!

  8. Holy cow, you’re going to SAN DIEGO COMIC CON?!?! That’s so awesome, Tammy! Hope you have a blast there.

As for books, I’m definitely curious about City of Lies, so I’ll keep an eye out for a review on that one if you get to it. For me, I’m planning to start Stacey Lee’s The Secret of a Heart Note (YA magical realism) tonight, then go on to Madeline Miller’s Circe and N.K. Jemisin’s Dreamblood Duology (the omnibus edition, so I can easily binge-read the series *smile*).
