What’s On My Plate – June 2018

June, you guys! What?!? How does time go by so fast? So it’s summer, my daughter just graduated from high school and my son will be home from college in two weeks. Already I can see that the summer months are going to zoom by without my permission;-) And just like every other summer, my TBR pile is overflowing with amazing new releases! Here’s what I have to review this month:

Most Anticipated:

I’ve been waiting months to read Christina Henry’s latest, The Mermaid, so I hope to be diving into this one very soon!

Trail of Lightning by Rebecca Roanhorse is another highly anticipated release. Roanhorse just won the Nebula award for her short story “Welcome to Your Authentic Indian Experience™” which bodes well for her debut novel:-D

Other Super Exciting June Releases!

I’ve been reading RAVE reviews for K.D. Edwards’ The Last Sun, and I’m excited to start this. It’s always nice to get in on the ground floor of a new Pyr series:-D

A new novella from Apex Books, Close Your Eyes by Paul Jessup sounds really strange but good! I’ve never read Jessup before so I’m looking forward to this.

Jurassic, Florida will be my first Hunter Shea book, an author that I hear about all the time on several of my friends’ blogs! I hope I love his books as much as they do.

The Grey Bastards by Jonathan French is a great example of a self-published book that was picked up by a traditional publisher. I didn’t read it in self-published form, but I sure heard lots of great things. Can’t wait!

Another horror title, Awakened by James S. Murray and Darren Wearmouth, sounds really creepy. It takes place in the New York City subways where you guessed it, bad things happen…

City of Bastards by Andrew Shvarts. I’m just finishing up the first book, Royal Bastards, and it’s so much fun! I’ll be reading this very soon.

Starless is Jacqueline Carey’s latest, and I’m looking forward to this standalone. It’s got pretty solid reviews so far on Goodreads, so we’ll see! This is also a #FearlessWomen book that I will be highlighting on its release date of June 12th.

Drop by Drop by Morgan Llywelyn sounds like a very cool story. Although the cover is giving me anxiety because I don’t like goop like melted plastic or food on flesh. Anyone else…???

Sparrow Hill Road by Seanan McGuire. This is a rerelease in anticipation of a sequel coming out this July, and as a fan of McGuire and urban fantasy in general, I’m really looking forward to it.

Well, May wasn’t a great month for posting reviews. In my defense, it was a super busy month in my personal life but I do wish I’d had more time to read and blog. BUT I am in the middle of a couple of May/April books that you’ll see reviews for soon, so stay tuned! In the meantime, here are my May reviews if you missed them:

Head on by John Scalzi

Obscura by Joe Hart

Terror is Our Business: Dana Roberts’ Casebook of Horrors by Joe R. Lansdale & Kasey Lansdale

The Peace Machine by Özgür Mumcu

Let me know what your reading plans are this month! Are we reading any of the same books?

  1. Congrats to your daughter and enjoy the summer with both of your kids. Once college starts, it seems like time together is less and less. I have Trail of Lightning and Mermaid to read this coming month as well. I’m always so impressed you get your post up the first of every month – it usually takes me until the 5th or 6th to map everything out!

Thanks Barb, I’m going to enjoy every second of this summer:-) Yeah, I am a “sort of” planner and I try to plan my posts ahead on a calendar, so I automatically write my “What’s on my Plate” post on the first of every month on that calendar so I don’t forget.

  2. The Mermaid looks so interesting to me. I wish I could get myself in some kind of order and write up a post like this! I’m good if I can do a wrap up post every 3 months!

    • Tammy

I think I’m more of a “look ahead” type person than a “look to the past” person, which is why I don’t do wrap up posts. Oh well, I love reading everyone else’s wrap ups!

That Trail of Lightning Cover is AWESOME! Not sure I even need to know what it’s about.

Head On leaves me feeling conflicted. I wasn’t a big fan of Lock In. It was okay, but didn’t leave me wanting more. But the more I see it places, the more I wonder if I should read it… The premise of Lock In really excited me, but the story itself isn’t what I was looking for..

Trail of Lightning definitely has one of the best covers I’ve seen in a while. Hmm, I would say if you weren’t a big fan of Lock In, you may not enjoy Head On. I actually liked Lock In more, if that tells you anything:-)

  4. I’m always a little worried about giving early hype about a book to other bloggers who still haven’t read it, but I really do hope you enjoy The Last Sun, Tammy! I’m excited for The Mermaid as well. I mean, that cover alone is worth it! 😀

    • Tammy

Yes, the cover of The Mermaid is beautiful, and I can’t wait to see what she does with mermaids. And I’ll let you know about The Last Sun!

  5. You have some good books coming up! I really want to try Trail of Lightning so look forward to reading about what you think. I hope you enjoy Shea! I can’t wait to get to this one and I hope it’s a good one too! 🙂

    • Tammy

I’m glad you and Barb introduced me to Shea, I’m so excited to read my first one:-)

  6. I need to finish my current book so I can get to Obscura lol. Trail of Lightning looks awesome, and I am adding Jurassic Florida right now because that looks AMAZING and hilarious.

  7. I’m excited to get started on The Mermaid too! And I just cracked open City of Bastards yesterday, I’m glad to hear you’re having a good time with the first book. It was so much fun,

    • Tammy

It was so much fun, I just finished it and if I didn’t have a couple of other books I really need to get to first, I’d be jumping right into City of Bastards:-)

  8. Can’t wait to see what you thought of Head On! And I can’t wait to read The Grey Bastards too. Got my hands on a copy and am soooo ready to dive into it! I have yet to read a Christina Henry story, but I have a couple of her books that I hope someday will be able to try out. Happy reading, Tammy! Stay safe!

    • Tammy

Christina Henry is so good! And I think the Mermaid is not quite as dark as her previous books. I can’t wait:-)

    • Tammy

I’m definitely going to try The Grey Bastards, hopefully it will be “my” kind of story:-)

  9. Fantastic book haul. Lots on here to look forward to.. I’m definitely excited about the Carey book.
    Lynn 😀

    • Tammy

I’m not sure I’ll get to everything on my June list (I mean it would be a miracle if I did!) but I always try:-)

  10. oh ok wow I do want to eat what you have on your plate! All these books look amazing. and wassup with all those bastards huh? 🙂 I’ve seen that word in titles recently! I want to read The Grey Bastards! I love The successful self-published stories. 🙂 \

    • Tammy

I haven’t really noticed her on Twitter but I’m glad you like her based on that. I’m hoping to start the book soon:-)
