What’s On My Plate – January 2018!

Happy New Year, everyone! I have a good feeling about 2018, especially when it comes to my reading plans. There are SO many books I’m already looking forward to, and I can’t wait to get started! I’m actually a little bit ahead this month, as I’ve already read two of my January review books, which is good because there are so many new books coming out this month.

I decided on a whim to do an update to my blog design, so you may have visited me yesterday when I was playing around with colors and such. I really needed a change and I think this one will work for now. I still have some tweaking to do, however. It’s amazing how many little things there are that can be changed and adjusted with my theme, and I keep seeing things I’ve forgotten about!

January is all about reading and reviewing for me. I don’t have any author events or giveaways planned at this point, so I’m going to concentrate on chipping away at my TBR, and as you can see it’s a daunting amount of books I’m trying to read. I’m also squeezing in a non-review book this month, something I haven’t done in a couple of years (!) Here’s what’s on my plate:

The Raptor and the Wren by Chuck Wendig. I really enjoyed Thunderbird last year, even though some readers didn’t think it lived up to the first books in the series, and I’m curious to see what Miriam Black is up to next!

Senlin Ascends by Josiah Bancroft. I believe this was self-published before Orbit picked it up, and I’ve heard nothing but amazing things. Can’t wait to get started!

Beneath the Sugar Sky by Seanan McGuire. This is book #3 in McGuire’s Wayward Children series, and it’s one I’ve already read (review coming soon). Unfortunately, it didn’t work that well for me, which makes me sad because this is one of my favorite series. I’ll explain why soon…

The Sky is Yours by Chandler Klang Smith. I have a NetGalley copy of this book, and then I won a physical ARC from Goodreads (gasp!) so I have double reasons to read this soon.

Black Star Renegades by Michael Moreci. This is the second of my January titles that I’ve already read, and I had a blast with it! My review should be up tomorrow, so check back!

Cry Your Way Home by Damien Angelica Walters. You may not be familiar with this author, but I hope that changes soon because she is a marvelous writer and has a strange and wonderful imagination.

Robots vs. Fairies edited by Navah Wolfe and Dominik Parisien. I’ve been looking forward to this short story collection for quite a while, the author line up is fantastic!

The Hazel Wood by Melissa Albert. I’ve seen some mixed reviews but that isn’t going to scare me away.

Perfect Little Stitches and Other Stories by Deborah Sheldon. Deborah has won some awards in Australia for her stories, which is one reason I decided to accept this collection for review. And isn’t the cover beautiful?

Unearthed by Amie Kaufman and Meagan Spooner. This book came unsolicited so it’s really not a priority, although I am excited to read it. We’ll see if I have time…

The Immortalists by Chloe Benjamin. I won this through a new-to-me website called Bookish First (have you heard of it?) It’s similar to Blogging for Books, if you remember that program. With Bookish First, you give your first impressions of books you’re interested in reading, and you’re entered into a raffle to win a copy. If you win, you’re expected to read and review the book on their site. The selection is pretty limited but I am curious to see how often they get new choices.

And a couple more, why not?

The Cruel Prince by Holly Black. I requested this on NetGalley months ago, but sadly the publisher either ignored or lost my request, so it’s hanging in limbo! Meanwhile, I’m not going to let that stop me from reading this, so I ordered a copy and it should be here any day now. I’ve read mostly positive reviews so I’m excited!

Winterglass by Benjanun Sriduangkaew. Technically this is a December review book but I’ve just started it, so my review won’t be up until January.

And that’s it! Let me know if you plan to read any of these books, or tell me about your January reading plans:-D

  1. Senlin Ascends caught my attention since I saw it in the Orbit monthly newsletter, and it sounds different enough from the usual fantasy offering that I’m both curious and wary about what I might encounter, even though, given the number of amazing debuts from last year, I believe it might turn out to be just as great… 🙂

  2. Happy New Year, Tammy! I think my January reads will go back and forth between catching up on 2017 books that I haven’t gotten to yet and magical realism / YA novels that are similar to my manuscript. No new books for me yet. In fact, I’m planning to buy fewer brand new books this year, since I bought waaaaaay too many last year. :S

Happy New Year, Sara! Good luck with your plan to buy less books:-) I definitely want to catch up this year, there are still quite a few review books from 2017 I couldn’t get to. Catching up is a great plan:-D

  3. Ah I’m so sad to hear you didn’t enjoy Beneath The Sugar Sky, I am looking forward to your review of it, I want to see why it didn’t work out for you.
Robots vs Fairies has been on my radar since it was announced, it such an amazing theme and as you mentionned, the author lin-up is amazing!

  4. Love the new look. It’s always fun when you have time to play around with things. I can’t wait to see why the new Seanan McGuire didn’t work for you. I have to order a copy because you know the problems I have with Tor.com digital ARCs. Looks like you have a lot of good reading ahead. I hope to work The Immortalists in too!

Thanks Barb! I was desperate for a copy of Beneath…so I emailed Tor.com and asked for a different version. They sent me an epub for Nook, and luckily I have a tablet that works. But anyway, hoping to get a review up later in the week.

  5. I love your makeover – it certainly starts the year with a bang! And the books you’ve got lined up are awesome, too… As ever, I’ll be following your superb reviews throughout the year, Tammy:)

  7. Your blog has a new face! It looks great. 🙂 You have so many books on your list I’m so curious about. I’m excited to hear your thoughts on them. It should be a great month.

  8. Gosh, so many wonderful books up here! Definitely looking forward to your reviews for all of them. Loving the new design and hope that 2018 will prove to be a wonderful year for reading for you, Tammy!! 😉

  9. Well, I thought I was catching up but then when I look at my books for February I seem to have more than I thought. Still.
Some good books on here – Im looking forward to Senlin Ascends and the Hazel Wood.
    Lynn 😀
