Over-Booked [77] – A Book Haul Post

Welcome to Over-Booked, where I share my latest and greatest book acquisitions! I’m linking up with Stacking the Shelves over at Tynga’s Reviews and The Sunday Post at The Caffeinated Book Reviewer.

It’s been an awesome two weeks for new books! I have a little of everything to share: review books, surprises, and a new PageHabit book box. So let’s get started!

Physical books for review:

Super big thanks and hugs to Orbit Books for Into the Drowning Deep by Mira Grant and Jade City by Fonda Lee, two books I’m really looking forward to. In fact, I’m probably reading Into the Drowning Deep as we speak.

Another highly anticipated book is The Naturalist by Andrew Mayne, which has some amazing reviews! Thanks to Wunderkind PR for sending me a review copy!

A surprise arrival of Marissa Meyer’s Renegades came this week, and I’m very excited and will try to fit this in at some point. I’m a big fan of Meyer and this looks really good. Thank you Feiwel & Friends!

Saga Press has been so good to me lately, and this week I received two awesome surprises from them! Quillifer by Walter Jon Williams and Ka: Dar Oakly in the Ruin of Ymr by John Crowley.  I don’t know much about either book, but I’ll definitely try to squeeze these in at some point. Thank you Saga!

Two surprise arrivals from Tor came this week: The Realms of God by Michael Livingston and Deadhouse Landing by Ian C. Esslemont. Both are later books in series which I’m not reading, so if you’re interested in either of these and you live in the US, let me know! Thank you Tor:-D

And thanks to Pyr for a finished paperback of The Nine by Tracy Townsend. This book was completely not what I expected—in a good way. Review coming soon!

I was thrilled to get this cool surprise from Big Honcho Media and Simon & Schuster! The box includes finished copies of The Diabolic and The Empress by S.J. Kincaid, a lovely Mahogany Teakwood candle, and bath bombs! I’ve heard such great things about this series and I’d love to find time to dive in:-D (I received this package for free from the publisher.)

Purchased:

This is my second PageHabit Science Fiction box, and even though it’s a little pricey, I’m going to keep my subscription going because for each purchase, Page Habit donates books to children who don’t have any access to them. That alone is so cool and I definitely want to support them. This month was GREAT  because I really want to read An Unkindness of Ghosts by Rivers Solomon. I’ve heard amazing things about it. The box also came with a library card pillow case (!), a space ship tea infuser (!), A light-up Jack O’Lantern and a bound short story by Carmen Maria Machado. All in all, a wonderful box:-D

Digital books for review:

Tess of the Road by Rachel Hartman. I couldn’t resist requesting this YA fantasy, especially since I’ve heard so many great things about it. Apparently you can read this first, even though it’s set in the same world as the author’s Seraphina books.

The Queen of All Crows by Rod Duncan. I loved Duncan’s The Bullet Catcher’s Daughter, and although I was bad and never finished that series, it appears his new book is set in the same world with some of the same characters. This is the start to a new series, though, so new readers are probably fine starting here. Thank you Angry Robot!

Weave a Circle Round by Kari Maaren. This came out last month, so I’m already behind, but that’s OK. I’m looking forward to reading this YA fantasy, so if not this month, then next month for sure. Thank you Tor Books!

The Fisher of Bones by Sarah Gailey. Yes, Sarah Gailey who wrote River of Teeth for Tor.com. I was approached by Serial Box, who collaborated with Fireside Fiction, to check out one of their new serials, and I decided to try this. Expect a review soon of the first episode. (Isn’t that cover lovely?)

Finally, thanks to Inkshares for Kill Creek by Scott Thomas. Halloween might be over, but that doesn’t mean I’m finished with scary stories!

That’s my book haul this week! I’d love to know if you plan on reading any of these. Which one should I read next?

I know! I’ve had her book of short stories on my wish list, and I’m hoping this story is in that collection.

    • Tammy

Good to know! I’m glad you’ve read it, just one more recommendation which makes me even more excited

  1. So many good books! I’m reading Renegades right now, and although I’m not that far in, I’m enjoying it! I look forward to hearing your thoughts about Sarah Gailey’s new story. I’m hoping to read River of Teeth soon as it sounds amazing 🙂

This was my first month for Page Habit. I got the Fantasy box and was pretty happy with it. I love that they donate money to children’s literacy, so I hope to support them more in the future. They are a little expensive so I don’t know that I can keep a rolling subscription, but will definitely hype it!

Had to add a couple of these to my TBR, but enjoy reading them all!

Thanks Liz! Did you get the new Kevin Hearne book in your box? I saw that one on Instagram and it looked cool!

  2. Can’t wait to hear what you think about Renegades. I got the Page Habit horror box and while I love that they donate books, it’s probably the only thing that keeps me hanging on. The last 2 months I’ve gotten Tor.com novellas which is fine, but other genres are getting hardcover books and I don’t know that for a novella, it’s worth the cost. I’ll give them another month or so to see what happens. I do get Nocturnal Readers box though and I LOVE it.

I’m super interested in The Fisher of Bones and need to see what it’s all about. Like you, I have Kill Creek and hey, horror isn’t just for Halloween huh?

    • Tammy

Yeah, Page Habit seems pricey, plus they are inconsistent. I follow the hashtag on Instagram, and some boxes have two books and some only have one. I don’t really understand how they do that. I’ve been tempted by the horror box, but I don’t think I can afford another one! But I may check out Nocturnal Readers!

Oh I need to get my hands on Renegades! Some of the others look interesting but that caught my eye first of course! Enjoy all the goodies!

    • Tammy

I was surprised to see both The Diabolic and The Empress in my package, it definitely made my day:-)

  4. You always get such COOL books, Tammy! I love the sound of Renegades and as for Tess of the Road – I loved Seraphina so this is one I’d like to track down and while I had some issues with the hippo hi-jinks in River of Teeth, I’d certainly like to check out Sarah Galley’s latest offering. I’ll certainly keep a look out for the reviews and hope you have a wonderful time reading these and your other books – what a great haul!

I did have quite the haul this week for sure, for which I feel very grateful. Thanks for stopping by!

  5. I’m also got an ARC of Tess of the Road. I’ll probably read it over the holidays, when I’ve got more time on my hands.

I’d love to see what you think of The Fisher of Bones, An Unkindness of Ghosts, and Jade City! I loved both An Unkindness of Ghosts and Jade City, and The Fisher of Bones is a story I’m thinking of picking up. Oh, and the short story by Carmen Maria Machado is pretty great too.

    • Tammy

I’m going to read the short story tonight, I think. I’m very interested in Machado’s new short story collection, so this story will be a great test to see if I like her:-)

  6. Great haul Tammy. Some lovely books on here – and as we both know, one of them at the very least is absolutely awesome! Happy reading.
    Lynn 😀

  7. Joe

Tammy, I was looking for the new Deadhouse Landing book and stumbled across your page. If you are still looking to get rid of it I would be happy to take it off your hands! Malazan happens to be my favorite series 🙂
