What’s On My Plate – October 2017

How did it get to be October? Seriously, I wish time would slow down a little. Last weekend, we took my son to college to help him get settled into the dorm. That was such a surreal experience! I can’t believe he’s taking that first step to being on his own, and I’m thrilled that he’s going to be getting a Computer Science degree at a top-notch school, and even better, he’s focusing on Game Design, his real passion. At the same time, my daughter is starting to apply to colleges for next year. So we only have one more year with her at home full time. I know it’s the circle of life and all that, but damn it’s hard.

Anyway, onto my bookish month! A couple of weeks ago I thought my October review pile was going to be on the light side, but I guess I’ve been adding more October books to my review pile without thinking first. Oh well, welcome to my life! My daughter’s first big show choir show of the year takes place this month, and I always lose some blogging time over that weekend, so no doubt I’ll get behind at some point. But, I do love October and I really have some awesome books lined up.

Here is what I have on my plate this month:

The Rules of Magic by Alice Hoffman. This is definitely my most highly anticipated book of the month, and I shall be starting it very soon!

Devils & Thieves by Jennifer Rush. I’ve already read a few really good reviews of this YA fantasy, and I’m curious to see if I’ll like it as much.

The Beautiful Ones by Silvia Moreno-Garcia. I’m still a bit hesitant about this, although I adored her last book. This just seems completely different, but I’ll reserve my opinion until after I read it:-)

Under the Pendulum Sun by Jeannette Ng. I’ve read a gushing review of this  book as well, and I can’t wait to find out if the story is as beautiful as the cover.

Mary Rose by Geoffrey Girard. This will be my second Girard book this year, and I can’t wait to see how he does a retelling of a classic ghost story by J.M. Barrie.

Sparked by Helena Echlin and Malena Watrous. I’ve had great experiences with every Inkshares book I’ve read to date, so I couldn’t be more exciting to dive into another one.

Spliced by Jon McGoran. I literally just downloaded this two days ago from Edelweiss, despite the fact that it was a September release. I’ve heard really good things about it, and after I had so much fun with The Genius Plague, I’m hoping this might be in a similar vein.

Boneyard by Seanan McGuire. I’m thrilled to have a new Seanan McGuire book to read this October, a weird western!

The Tiger’s Daughter by K. Arsenault Rivera. I’ll admit, I’ve read some mixed reviews of this book. But mixed reviews don’t usually stop me from forming my own opinions.

Author Interviews & Giveaways:

I’m thrilled to have two authors joining me this month. I’ll kick things off this Tuesday with an interview with The Genius Plague author David Walton! You guys must read this book, I had so much fun with it. Even better, Pyr Books will be giving away two INTERNATIONAL copies, so all my readers around the globe can join in:-D

And a little later in the month, don’t miss my interview with Brad Abraham, author of Magicians Impossible. I had a blast reading this magical spy novel and I’m excited to chat with him about the book. And guess what? Brad has offered a signed copy as a giveaway, so stay tuned so you don’t miss out!

And here’s a recap of the books I reviewed in September! Click on the links to read my reviews if you missed them. I didn’t manage to get very many reviews up, but hey, September is typically a crazy month for me.

The Genius Plague by David Walton

Godsgrave by Jay Kristoff

Magicians Impossible by Brad Abraham

A Secret History of Witches by Louisa Morgan

  1. Ohh, and I meant to say, I know what you’re going through with the children moving on and becoming more independent – it’s 2 parts ‘yay’, freedom and no more towels on the bathroom floor, and 2 parts ‘boo’ – why do they have to leave *sob*.

Yeah, it’s weird. After my son left I spent an entire weekend scrubbing and cleaning his room (boys are the worst!) and now that it’s so clean, I’ve been spending a lot of time in there reading.

I think September and October are the worst months for new releases. I’m actually looking forward to December! I only have one review book so far and I hope to keep it that way, and just do catch up reading.

  2. I actually just finished The Beautiful Ones last night. It was… OK. Well-written, but the characters frustrated me during the first half – and then the second half helped the book redeem itself, to an extent. I should have a review up on Goodreads in the next day or two, but it’ll be interesting to try to sum up my thoughts without rambling too much.

Best wishes to your son during his first year of college! And good for him for pursuing his passion. 🙂

That is my fear for The Beautiful Ones. I have heard mixed things about it, so I’m a little worried. I’ll look for your review!

  3. I’ve also got hold of The Beautiful Ones, so I shall be intrigued to see what you make of it, too. I am going to have to track down Godsgrave – I think you had a great selection of books in September and a brilliant line-up during October. However, like you I just wish 2017 would slow down!

I agree! The years go so fast these days. I just want to relax and enjoy everything but I’m always hurrying to keep up:-/

  4. Good luck to your son at school- game design sounds awesome! The Beautiful Ones does look interesting, and I’ve heard this author is really good. I should try one of these books at some point.

Thanks Greg! Yep, Silvia Moreno-Garcia is really good, at least Certain Dark Things was amazing. I hope her latest is too:-)

  5. I’m worried about The Beautiful Ones too. You know how much I love Certain Dark Things and this sounds like a completely different genre so it makes me nervous. Interested in hearing what you think about it soon. I agree the month is really flying. I have a couple of blog tour commitments early in the month but I’m hoping to get some other ones out of the way afterwards. Still working on my Halloween Bingo.
