Over-Booked [75] – A Book Haul Post

Welcome to Over-Booked, where I share my latest and greatest book acquisitions! I’m linking up with Stacking the Shelves over at Tynga’s Reviews and The Sunday Post at The Caffeinated Book Reviewer.

Has it really been a month since my last Over-Booked? I haven’t been getting that many review books in the mail (thankfully! I really do want to catch up) and I’ve been pretty good with NetGalley too. But nonetheless, I do have some new books to share with you. Here are my latest and greatest:

Physical books for review:

Horizon by Fran Wilde. I’ve read the first book in Wilde’s Bone Universe series, Updraft, but I’m not caught up with book two, Cloudbound. I really enjoyed what I’ve read so far, and I’m hoping to finish off this series before the end of the year. With thanks to Tor for the finished copy!

I’m very excited to dig into ANOTHER Seanan McGuire book (does that woman ever sleep??), Boneyard, the third book in the Deadlands series. These books are based on the RPG franchise of the same name, which I’m not familiar with, and yet how can I resist a weird western written by one of my favorite authors? The answer is, I can’t. Thank you to Tor for the review copy and cool poster:-D

Children of Refuge by Margaret Peterson Haddix. This is book two in the series, and I have to admit I hadn’t heard of it before this book arrived in the mail. It looks like I need to read the first book, so I’ll try to find time for this series at some point. Thank you Simon & Schuster!

A surprise ARC in a very nice package arrived from Simon & Schuster, a copy of The Glass Town Game by Catherynne M. Valente. Which is interesting because I had already received a finished copy from the publisher. But this makes me want to read it even more, especially since it came with swag:-) Thank you S&S!

Three lovely finished copies showed up recently, two of which I’ve read and one that I’m reading very soon. First up, thanks to Saga Press, An Unkindness of Magicians by Kat Howard. My review for this will be up Monday, so stay tuned! I just reviewed The Genius Plague by David Walton and LOVED it. Thank you Pyr! And I’ve got an interview with the author next week, as well as a giveaway of this fabulous book, so don’t miss it! And finally, The Tiger’s Daughter by K. Arsenault Rivera, an epic fantasy with an East Asian flavor that I can’t wait to start. Thanks to Tor:-D

Purchased:

I’ve been on a book buying binge lately, and I’m not sorry! I bought a copy of The Grip of It by Jac Jemc because I’ve heard great things about it, and I really want to read it in October. Someone is doing a read along, but I can’t remember which blog. If it’s you, please let me know, I may join in!

I could NOT resist buying my own copy of Spoonbenders by Daryl Gregory. Even better, this is a limited, signed and stamped edition from the UK. A little pricey, but hey. This book is totally worth it:-D

I caved under advertising pressure and decided to subscribe to the Page Habit Science Fiction monthly book box, and this month featured Paradox Bound by Peter Clines. Which is ironic because I have a NetGalley review copy of this book that I haven’t read yet. Hopefully this will spur me into reading it.

And finally, something very cool. This is the Stephen King commemorative issue of the Birth.Movies.Death magazine, a publication from the famous Alamo Draft House. This edition is all Stephen King and has various articles/reviews about his movie and TV projects. It’s a must for any SK fan or collector!

Digital books for review:

Glass Town by Steven Savile. I remember featuring this as a Waiting on Wednesday pick months ago, and so I’m happy to finally have a review copy. This book comes out in December, so I’ll be reading it soon. Thanks to Thomas Dunne Books!

Beneath the Sugar Sky (Wayward Children #3) by Seanan McGuire. I almost hesitate to include this digital copy from Tor.com, because I’m unable to download these books for some strange reason (and it’s making me super sad). BUT I’m hoping this pops up on NetGalley soon so I can read it on my Kindle. I ADORE this series and will read it one way or another! Thank you Tor.com!

Spliced by Jon McGoran. This was an impulse download on Edelweiss, and I think I just caught it before they pulled it down (the release date was yesterday). I hadn’t really heard much about it, but it was literally all over the internet this week, I read a couple of great reviews and read some author interviews and guest posts as well. I decided to download it since it was a “read now” title, and I’ll be squeezing it into my October review pile.  Big thanks to “new to me” publisher Holiday House.

I was pitched two upcoming Apex Book titles recently, and I jumped at both of them because a) I love Damien Angelica Walters and b) I’ve been thinking about requesting Winterglass anyway. First up, Winterglass by Benjanun Sriduangkaew not only has a beautiful cover, but one of the characters has a shard of mirror embedded in her heart! And Cry Your Way Home is the upcoming short story collection by one of my “go to” authors, Damien Angelica Walters. Her stories are sometimes sad and painful, but they contain beauty as well. Big thanks to Apex!

And that’s my book haul this week. Are you planning on reading any of these books? Let me know:-D

  1. Lots of great books!! A friend sent me a copy of A Grip of It, not ever heard of it till she asked me if I wanted it. It does look good though!! 🙂 Perfect for Oct. Hope you enjoy all your great reads!

  2. My review will be a week late, but I’m going to pick up The Tiger’s Daughter today after finishing Blackwing this morning (which is awesome, by the way).

  3. I bought Updraft a few weeks ago when it was a Kindle deal, I really want to start this series but I have heard so many mixed opinions that I am happy to learn you enjoyed the first book since we tend to have similar opinions on books! 🙂
I missed your review of The Genius Plague so I’ll have to check that one out!

I really enjoyed Updraft, although it wasn’t a perfect book. But I’m so curious to read the other books in the series, because sometimes debut authors grow so much between their first and third books.

  4. I can’t wait to see what you think about Boneyard. I love her so much that if you like it half as much as her other series, I’ll have to grab a copy. Beneath the Sugar Sky has been up as a “wish for it” title on Netgalley. I still can’t get those darn things downloaded either. I ended up getting The Murders of Mollu Southbourne off of Netgalley or else I would have had to buy it despite getting a free arc.

Oh I am SO GLAD someone else is having issues with the Tor.com files. I’m so frustrated because there are so many I want to read. I’ve literally tried to download them on my phone, both my computers, my Nook. And I didn’t even know Molly Southbourne was available on NetGalley! It was hidden under “General fiction.” Thanks for the heads up!

I hope to catch up with Paradox Bound, maybe not until November, though. October is crazy crowded!

Right?? I just love the cover, and from reading her other stories, I have to say this cover works well with her style of writing.

  5. I love the last two book covers – so lovely. Hope you love them.
I’m looking forward to Seanan McGuire and I’m really curious about Spliced.
    Happy reading
    Lynn 😀

  6. I actually got an ARC of The Tiger’s Daughter last week! 😀 So I’m planning to start it tonight. And goodness, you’re right about the Winterglass cover being beautiful. I hadn’t heard of that book til now.

  7. I need to catch up with Seanan McGuire’s amazing output – perhaps she has a writing clone – whatever it is I want some of it, too… I’m looking forward to see what you make of The Tiger’s Daughter, Tammy and I think you have got some amazing reads in October – I love the look of Spliced. Have a great month:))

Honestly, I wouldn’t mind taking a break from everything else and reading only Seanan McGuire until I catch up!
