Over-Booked [74] – A Book Haul Post

Welcome to Over-Booked, where I share my latest and greatest book acquisitions! I’m linking up with Stacking the Shelves over at Tynga’s Reviews and The Sunday Post at The Caffeinated Book Reviewer.

Nice, small book haul this time around! I couldn’t resist downloading a couple of HarperCollins titles from Edelweiss, and a NetGalley request finally came through. And I have a couple of new purchases as well.

Also, at the end of this post I wanted to mention a couple of interesting crowdfunders that are still going on, so let me know if you’re backing them too!

Physical books:

Huge thanks to Thomas Dunne Books for a lovely finished hardcover of Magicians Impossible by Brad Abraham! It’s my next read and I’m really looking forward to it.

And even HUGER thanks to Alma Katsu for contacting me after she saw my Waiting on Wednesday post featuring The Hunger. She was kind enough to send an ARC to me, although The Hunger doesn’t come out until next March.

And finally, a surprise arrival that looks really good! (Or maybe I entered a giveaway and just don’t remember??) In any case, Otherworld by Jason Segel and Kirsten Miller sounds great. Thank you Delacorte Press:-D

Since I still hadn’t spent an Amazon gift card I got back in February, I finally decided to buy some books. I’ve been wanting physical copies of Seanan McGuire’s wonderful Wayward Children series, so I’m starting my collection with the first two books (Every Heart a Doorway and Down Among the Sticks and Bones). Book three comes out soon so I’ll definitely be adding it to the shelf when I can. I’ve also been hearing amazing things about My Absolute Darling by Gabriel Tallent, and even though I never have time read my other love, literary fiction, I knew I had to buy this and try to fit it in. Although truthfully this sounds more like horror. This one’s going to be big, people! Look for a review at some point.

Digital books for review:

I caved and downloaded three new HarperCollins titles from Edelweiss, which all come out next year. First up, Honor Among Thieves by Rachel Caine and Ann Aguirre. I just couldn’t resist, since I love both authors:-) Heart of Iron by Ashley Poston looks like a really good YA SF title, and I love the cover. And Dread Nation by Justina Ireland is a zombie story set during the Civil War.

I was finally approved for The Hazel Wood by Melissa Albert, yay! Not only is the cover gorgeous, but this fairy tale inspired story sounds right up my alley.  Thank you to HarperCollins and Flatiron Books for these review copies!

And finally, a couple of cool crowdfunding opportunities for genre fans! One I’ve already backed, and the other I’m just sharing:

I’m a huge Silvia Moreno-Garcia fan, and she’s got an IndieGogo campaign right now for a new science fiction novella. BUT it ends in a couple of days, so if you’re interested, hurry over to this link and help out! As I’m writing this post it’s 98% funded, so it may have reached its goal by now (I hope!)

Who doesn’t know who Patrick Rothfuss is? And if you’re a Rothfuss fan then you probably already know about this Kickstarter, a beautiful deck of cards based on the characters in The Name of the Wind. They really are lovely, although personally I’ve bought card decks from Kickstarters before and I’m just not quite sure what to do with them. But if you’re interested, click here to back this cool project! It’s still got a couple of weeks to go.

And that’s it for this time! Let me know if you’re planning on reading any of these books:-D

  1. Some lovely books here. I saw the Hazel Wood on NG and it looks and sounds really good but it’s only US so I’ll await your review and the release for this one.
    Lynn 😀

I’m probably going to buy the anniversary edition of the Name of the Wind too, I love things like that!

  2. I’ve got a request in for Dread Nation but haven’t heard back yet. Otherwise our lists head different directions. I can’t wait to see your reviews. 🙂

I actually love that we read different books, I always enjoy your reviews because they are books I often don’t have time to get to:-)

  3. The Hunger looks like one I need to check out. And I need to get the Wayward Children books going too, nice that book three is coming soon. I can binge ’em maybe. 🙂

Yes, I think a binge read would be great for the Wayward Children series. It’s honestly one of my favorites:-)

  4. Hooray for the approval coming in for The Hazel Wood! I also got a copy of Magicians Impossible in the mail and I’m desperately trying to find time to fit it in this month since it sounds so good. Those cards are amazing! I once pledged to a NotW trading card project on Kickstarter too, but that was a while back. The art style looks similar, I wonder if these are from the same company.

I’m very excited about The Hazel Wood! I’ve always wanted to know how NetGalley publishers do their approvals. Some are really fast and others take weeks:-)

  5. Linking up to the Sunday post! I didn’t really finish making my rounds then I guess! You weren’t on the list when I linked up 🙂 do you link up late every week? Maybe I always miss you!
All of these look so good though. Especially that crowdfunded one!
