Over-Booked [72] – A Book Haul Post

Welcome to Over-Booked, where I share my latest and greatest book acquisitions! I’m linking up with Stacking the Shelves over at Tynga’s Reviews and The Sunday Post at The Caffeinated Book Reviewer.

I have a pretty small book haul for the last three weeks, which is fine with me:-) I’m continuing to curb my requests through the end of the year, although there have been a BUNCH of tempting things pop up on NetGalley lately, and I am waiting on several approvals still. But I’m pretty excited about these new additions to the pile:

Physical books for review:

I’ve discovered a wonderful source for collectible, signed UK editions of books: Goldsboro Books. How to Stop Time is my third or fourth purchase from them, and yes, the prices are heftier than if I just bought it from Amazon or The Book Depository, but I like the idea of supporting a brick and mortar bookstore, plus many of their books are signed. I’ve heard some good things about Matt Haig’s latest, so I decided to check it out. Plus extra special—it won’t come out in the U.S. until next February.

Several awesome books arrived from Orbit Books, three to be exact! The Stone Sky by N. K. Jemisin is the final book in her award-winning trilogy (as if there is anyone reading this that doesn’t know that!). I’ve seen some really good reviews for Anna Smith Spark’s The Court of Broken Knives, and I’m dying to see what all the hype is about. And a surprise from Orbit arrived just this week, a book that I’ve had on my Goodreads TBR for a while, A Secret History of Witches by Louisa Morgan. It’s got awesome reviews already, and I can’t wait to dive in! Thank you Orbit!!

And finally, I was thrilled when my copy of The Clockwork Dynasty by Daniel H. Wilson arrived from Wunderkind PR and Doubleday! Many of my blogger friends have already read this and loved it.

Digital books for review:

First, please appreciate the beauty of this amazing group of colorful books! Don’t you want to read them all?

I had to grab Under the Pendulum Sun by Jeannette Ng when it popped up on NetGalley the other day. After all, I did feature it as a Waiting on Wednesday pick!

Ruin of Angels by Max Gladstone was also a no-brainer. Although I’m a bit behind with his Craft Sequence, there isn’t really any hard and fast rules about what order to read these books in. And thanks to Tor.com, I was approved for the NetGalley version of the book. I’m really struggling with the Tor.com downloads that are usually offered. I’ve never been fond of Adobe Reader, and lately I haven’t been able to get my tablet software to work, which is one reason I haven’t been reviewing very many Tor.com novellas. So every time one appears on NetGalley, I immediately request it! (Also, I have to say I’m confused: is it Ruin of Angels or The Ruin of Angels? The cover says one thing, and Goodreads says another.)

I loved my first Inkshares book so much (Devil’s Call) that I jumped at the chance when I saw another Inkshares title. Sparked by Helena Echlin and Malena Watrous sounds really good!

Gluttony Bay by Matt Wallace is the sixth book in his Sin du Jour series. I’m behind! I still need to read book #5, Greedy Pigs. Gluttony Bay doesn’t come out for a few months, so I have time. All the covers of this hysterically funny novella series have very unsettling images. There’s something about food on covers that creeps me out…

And thanks again to Tor.com for approving my request of these last two novellas on NetGalley: Starfire: A Red Peace by Spencer Ellsworth and The Twilight Pariah by Jeffrey Ford. The reading experience will be much more pleasurable thanks to me being able to read them on my Kindle:-)

And that’s my haul this week. I’m curious to hear if you’ve read any of these, or are planning to:-D

  1. AHHHHHH The Stone Sky! Knowing me, I’ll probably drop whatever I’m reading then just for that book. I’m so excited and yet so terrified to see how that series ends. (Are you, too?)

No new books for me lately, but I recently rented Rainbow Rowell’s Fangirl from the library and liked it more than I expected to. And tomorrow I’m hoping to pick up my next rental: The Walls Around Us by Nova Ren Suma.

Yes, I’m a little terrified! But I’ve seen so many 5 star reviews so I’m not terribly worried:-)

  2. I can’t really get the downloads to load either. I’ve tried everything but apparently I’ve registered too many devices for the free version and I need to deactivate some and for the life of me I just gave up after trying one day. I do love this cover for Matt Wallace’s newest. It is probably one of my favorites. I see you did ask for and get Sparked so that’s super exciting too. Great haul and don’t tell, but I tend to request Netgalley books when things are slow too…it must be a common ailment 🙂

I’m glad I’m not the only one! I’ve asked the publicist if other bloggers are having trouble with the downloads and he said “No, it’s just you!” lol.

  3. The book that immediately stood out was A Secret History of Witches. I love stories about witches so I have total book envy for that one – look forward to seeing what you think of it. I’ve read a couple of these and I also have a copy of the Twilight Pariah which I’m really looking forward to.
    Lynn 😀

  4. “The Twilight Pariah” looks so spooky! Also, “A Secret History of Witches” looks really interesting so I headed over to Goodreads and they’re doing a giveaway for it right now. Neat! Anyway, I added it to my TBR. 😀 Also, it’s neat that you get some signed books from Goldsboro Books. I love the idea of that. Anyway. Good luck with your reading this month!

I need to start The Stone Sky soon, I’m a bit behind, but I will read it for sure this month:-)
