Over-Booked [70] – A Book Haul Post

Welcome to Over-Booked, where I share my latest and greatest book acquisitions! I’m linking up with Stacking the Shelves over at Tynga’s Reviews and The Sunday Post at The Caffeinated Book Reviewer.

I’m trying to back off on requests, but I did get some amazing books these past two weeks! Take a look:

Physical review copies

Four books I’m SUPER excited for! First off, Strange Practice by Vivian Shaw, with thanks to Orbit! This story sounds crazy, but in a totally good way. This is a July release so I’ll be reading it this month.

Big thanks to Tor for The Tiger’s Daughter, the first in a new series by debut author K. Arsenault Rivera. I am in love with the artwork on the cover, and I love the bookmark and postcard that came with the ARC!

The Genius Plague by David Walton is a book I’ve been looking forward to for a while. I really loved Supersymmetry by Walton, and I’m excited to read this story about an invading fungus that makes you smarter:-) Thank you Pyr!

Also from Tor, a book I have from NetGalley, but I’m thrilled to have a finished copy. The Queen of Swords by R.S. Belcher is the third in his Golgotha series. I’m a bit behind with my June books, but I’ll be reading this in July for sure.

I was invited to join the blog tour for The Golden Compass, and I didn’t even hesitate before I said YES. His Dark Materials by Philip Pullman is one of my very favorite series, and in anticipation of Pullman’s upcoming The Book of Dust, Random House is having a review blog tour to get readers excited. I’m glad to have this opportunity for a reread, something I normally wouldn’t have time for. Look for my review on July 17th!

A surprise from Tor Books, Perilous Prophecy by Leanna Renee Hieber is billed as a stand-alone prequel to Hieber’s Strangely Beautiful series. I’ve seen this series around but now I’m very curious to read it.

Finally, a surprise from Little, Brown Books for Young Readers, the third book in Kate Elliott’s Court of Fives series, Buried Heart. I haven’t yet started this, but these books have been on my TBR for quite a while. Hopefully at some point I can do a binge read!

Digital review copies:

I was super excited to see The Uploaded by Ferrett Steinmetz pop up on NetGalley. Thanks to Angry Robot for the download! And check out the fantastic Joey Hi-Fi cover:-D

I featured Devils & Thieves by Jennifer Rush in a top ten list of upcoming YA books I’m looking forward to, so I didn’t hesitate at all when it came to pushing the NetGalley request button. Thanks again to Little, Brown Books!

From the awesome folks at Tor.com, Sarah Gailey’s second novella in her series about an alternate history featuring hippos, Taste of Marrow, is one I’m very excited for!

And last but not least, Apex Books offered me a review copy of horror novel Entertaining Demons by Daniel I. Russell. I’ve heard really good things about this story that involves reality TV and demons. This is also a July book so look for a review later this month!

Are you planning to read any of these books? Let me know:-D

  1. Amazing list of books. I don’t think you could go wrong with any of those. I looove the His Dark Materials series. That’s a really great tour to be on. I hope you have a great time rereading The Golden Compass.

Me too! I’m always a little worried about rereading books I love (will I love them the second time?) But I can’t wait to find out:-)

    • Tammy

I hadn’t heard about her new book either, which is weird, this is supposed to be a really good series.

  2. A copy of Queen of Swords came in to me a couple days ago, and the pitch made it sound like it can be read as a standalone, do you know if this is the case? I’ve only read Six-Gun Tarot! Was the second book a standalone too? I thought I wouldn’t be able to read this one without being caught up, but now I’m really hoping I can! I’m probably also going to have to request Strange Practice at some point too once I get done with my current Orbit book, it looks really good!

I feel like The Shotgun Arcana would have worked pretty well as a stand alone. His books are set in the same world, with character overlap, but the stories are pretty different. I hope to read Queen of Swords soon, and I’ll let you know:-)

  3. Queen of Swords looks awesome, I just read the first book in that series recently and it was a trip. Even Gods Can Be Slain has a nice cover too…

I’m glad you enjoyed The Six Gun Tarot, it’s a pretty cool series, very different from a lot of other fantasy I read.

I’d buy The Tiger’s Daughter just based on that cover. Awesome artwork on both that and the postcard. Here’s hoping the story matches the art!

  5. Ohhhhhh I really, really hope you have time to read The Tiger’s Daughter. That one sounds fantastic, especially with the Mongolian-inspired setting and culture.

    • Tammy

I agree, The Tiger’s Daughter sounds really good. I hope I can read it too, and since the release date is several months away, I’m planning ahead:-)

That’s my fear too, I have such fantastic memories and emotions about that series, that I don’t want that to change.

  6. Duuuude I am so sad. I got rejected on NetGalley for Devils & Thieves. It was my first rejection (from any publisher) in years! And I request a lot, so you’d think there would be more mixed in there. Never mind that I have a 99% feedback ratio and nearly 500 reviews posted. Le sigh. I want to try to find a copy via #booksfortrade but then I’m like, is the drama worth it???? I’ll just wait. I’m impatient though! LOL. 😀

Anyway. I hope you enjoy all of your new books, Tammy! Have a great week. =)

That’s so weird! Maybe they just reached a max number they wanted to approve? I can’t imagine you getting turned down. Maybe someone hit the decline button by mistake!

    • Tammy

You may be able to read this one as a standalone, if I remember correctly the last one worked well that way. We’ll see, I’ll let you know!

  7. I am DEFINITELY waiting on pins and needles for Strange Practice! I can’t believe release date is finally aorund the corner!

  8. How wonderful to be ASKED to join the book tour for The Golden Compass – congratulations! That’s a mark of the quality of your blog, I suspect – and entirely deserved. Strange Practice sounds wonderful – and like you, I’m REALLY looking forward to A Taste of Marrow, though I don’t have a review copy. I hadn’t realised that Kate Elliott has brought out another book in her amazing Court of Fives series – thank you for sharing:)
