Tammy’s Top Ten Books of 2017 – So Far

Top Ten Tuesday is hosted by the Broke and the Bookish, where bloggers are given a different top ten list each week.

Can you believe we’re half-way through 2017? I can’t! Today we’re focusing on the best books we’ve read so far this year. A few of these will probably end up on my final list at the end of the year, but there’s still six months left to topple some of these from the top ten. Here are my favorite books so far (click on the links to read my reviews):

Six Wakes by Mur Lafferty. This was such an unexpected surprise! A fantastic locked door mystery in space, this book was NEAR PERFECT. Read my review.

Phantom Pains (The Arcadia Project #2) by Mishell Baker. It’s hard to get the second book in a series right, but Baker did it in spades. This series is so unique and fun, and Book #3 is already on the horizon! Read my review.

The Boy on the Bridge by M.R. Carey. I loved this just as much as The Girl with All the Gifts. It’s a prequel, so you can read it first if you want to. Carey is an amazing storyteller who just has it ALL. Read my review.

Kings of the Wyld by Nicholas Eames. Wow, this book surprised everyone, I think! Every blogger I know loves it, and I’m already chomping at the bit for the next book. Read my review.

Spoonbenders by Daryl Gregory. This may not be my favorite Gregory book, but it was pretty damn good. Spoonbenders is more of a family drama/comedy than speculative fiction, but it’s so perfectly written that I have to give the author props for trying something new. Read my review.

Metronome by Oliver Langmead. This book was nothing like I expected, which is one reason I loved it so much. If you’re looking for an additive fantasy adventure, then look not further. Read my review.

Down Among the Sticks and Bones (Wayward Children #2) by Seanan McGuire. McGuire’s first novella in the series, Every Heart a Doorway, has been winning awards right and left, and for good reason. This whimsical, nostalgic look at childhood and growing up is one of my favorite series. Read my review.

Strange the Dreamer by Laini Taylor. This is the only YA that made my list (which isn’t that surprising) and it was a good one. Taylor’s trademark worldbuilding skills are hard at work, and I’m really looking forward to the next book in the series, The Muse of Nightmares. Read my review.

Fata Morgana by Steven R. Boyett & Ken Mitchroney. This time travel story has something extra: some very detailed WWII historical details. If you’re a WWII history buff, and a B17 bomber fanatic in particular, you’ll love this story. Read my review.

The Strange Case of the Alchemist’s Daughter by Theodora Goss. I just finished this monster mash-up romp, and I had so much fun with it! If you’re a fan of classic monster tales (think Frankenstein, The Island of Dr. Moreau and more) and lively female characters, then you must add this to your list. Review to come soon!

I’d love to hear if you’ve read any of these, and let me know your favorite books of the year so far:-D

I hate it when I miss out on something, but I don’t figure it out until it’s too late! Hope you can get copies at some point:-)

You’d love The Strange Case…it was so much fun! I’m actually looking forward to writing my review:-)

It seems every year goes faster and faster. Oh no, is that what happens when you get older??

  1. Quite a few of these are definitely on my wishlist. Kings of the Wyld, Down Among the Sticks and Bones and the Alchemists Daughter immediately jump out at me.

Hope you find the time to read them! They are all so good, I wouldn’t know which one to tell you to read first:-)

  2. Nice to see Strange The Dreamer on your list. I loved the worldbuilding as well, and I swear Laini Taylor wields a vocabulary wand when she writes. 🙂 Also, I really want to read the first Arcadia Project book. But I’m doing my best to not buy any books for a while… but maybe my local library might have it.

Some of my favorites of 2017… For brand new books, the first ones that come to mind are Katharine Arden’s The Bear and the Nightingale, Neil Gaiman’s Norse Mythology, and V.E. Schwab’s A Conjuring of Light. And for pre-2017 books, I’d say Emily St. John Mandel’s Station Eleven, Leslye Walton’s The Strange and Beautiful Sorrows of Ava Lavender, and Robin Hobb’s Assassin’s Apprentice.

I’d love to do a Station Eleven reread someday! And The Bear and the Nightingale is a book I hope I can squeeze in during the next six months.

That’s why I did a top ten Tuesday, so I knew I would only highlight ten books. Otherwise, I have other favorites that I wanted to mention. Maybe on the next list!

  3. They all sound very interesting! Six Wakes and The Strange Case of the Alchemist’s Daughter especially. I’m going to read Every Heart a Doorway very soon so it’s nice to know the sequel is great.

  4. That’s an amazing list, Tammy – and I haven’t yet read any of them! I particularly like the sound of The Boy on the Bridge, Spoonbenders, Six Wakes and Strange the Dreamer. Hopefully I can catch up with at least some of these in the second half of the year…

Thanks Sarah! I have so many more books to get to this year, I can tell it’s going to be tough to choose my favorites at the end of the year:-)
