Over-Booked [69] – A Book Haul Post

Welcome to Over-Booked, where I share my latest and greatest book acquisitions! I’m linking up with Stacking the Shelves over at Tynga’s Reviews and The Sunday Post at The Caffeinated Book Reviewer.

Wow, my last Over-Booked was on April 29th! I knew it had been a while but I didn’t think it had been that long. It’s true, I haven’t been getting as many review copies lately (which is a good thing!), but I still have some sparkly new books to share with you.

Physical Review Books:

A couple of surprises and a couple of request granted!

Shattered Minds by Laura Lam. Big thanks to Tor for this surprise finished copy! I plan on reading this before the end of the month. I have a NetGalley copy already but a physical book is always welcome:-)

And speaking of finished copies, this lovely hardcover of The Refrigerator Monologues by Catherynne M. Valente was a big surprise! Thanks goes to Saga Press and Wunderkind PR for this beautiful book that I really enjoyed.

More of Me by Kathryn Evans. I’d never heard of this until it arrived from Amulet Books, but it does have an interesting premise! If time permits, I may check it out.

Magicians Impossible by Brad Abraham. Huge thanks to Thomas Dunne Books! I stumbled across this months ago and I’ve been salivating over it ever since. I don’t normal pay attention to publisher’s “blank meets blank” comparisons, but who can resist “Harry Potter meets James Bond” ?? Not me.

Finally, a book I’m quite excited for, Godsgrave by Jay Kristoff. Not everyone fell in love with Nevernight like I did, but I personally can’t wait to see where this story goes next. Huge thanks again to Thomas Dunne!

Purchased:

I’ve ordered boxes from Quarterly before, but I was never 100% satisfied with the box versus amount of money forked over. But I did decide to buy this one, curated by author Jeff VanderMeer. It includes his latest book, of course, Borne (which I’m terribly behind and should have read by now), as well as two additional books that Jeff chose for the box. Also, a cool Borne-themed water bottle! I have no idea why there’s a bear on it, but I’ll let you know when I read it. Even cooler, the book is annotated by the author, with sticky notes throughout (he didn’t actually write in the book) explaining his ideas. Such a cool box, and I’m so happy to have bought it!

I also bought a UK copy of Spellslinger by Sebastien de Castell. I’m not sure it’s out in the US yet, but I couldn’t resist this signed/limited UK edition.

Digital Review Copies:

Beasts of Extraordinary Circumstance by Ruth Emmie Lang. I am trying to stay away from NetGalley, and clearly I haven’t succeeded yet, but I am being very choosy about hitting that “request” button. This has some amazing reviews already and it’s screaming my name (magic realism!).

Devil’s Call by J. Danielle Dorn. Thanks to Mogsy for putting this on my radar. I never would have looked twice with this cover, but I believe she gave it 5 stars so I’m in!

Paradox Bound by Peter Clines. I’ve heard such great things about The Fold, but haven’t read it yet. So I decided to try his latest.

An Oath of Dogs by Wendy N. Wagner. This is one of my favorite covers of the year so far, and it’s about dogs, so of course I’m going to read it!

The Rules of Magic by Alice Hoffman. I’m very happy to have a review copy of this prequel to Practical Magic. It’s been some time since I’ve read an Alice Hoffman book, I’m overdue:-)

Sourdough by Robin Sloan. It’s so weird, every time I feature a book on Waiting on Wednesday, I end up finding it on NetGalley! What’s a girl to do??

The Waking Land by Callie Bates. So reviews are all over the place with this book, I’m more curious than ever to read it!

Geek Actually by Cathy Yardley, Melissa Blue, Cecelia Tan and Rachel Stuhler. This is the latest from Serial Box, and I’m reading the first four episodes. My review will be up next week! This isn’t the usual thing I read, but it is a lot of fun. It’s about a group of professional women who are all “geeks” in one way or another, and the friendships they form with each other.

Freefall by Joshua David Bellin. I requested this months ago on NetGalley, so I was really surprised when I finally got an approval.

So many new cool novellas from Tor.com! I’m excited about each of these and hope to read and review them all.

Acadie by David Hutchinson, The Twilight Pariah by Jeffrey Ford, Ruin of Angels by Max Gladstone, The Red Threads of Fortune and The Black Tides of Heaven by JY Yang, and The Murders of Molly Southbourne by Tade Thompson. I literally want to read them all NOW.

And that’s my book haul this week. I’d love to hear if you plan to read any of these too!

  1. You have a fabulous book haul there, Tammy! I particularly love the look of Freefall and Paradox Bound – I also have Beasts of Extraordinary Circumstance and am looking forward to tucking into that one… And NOW I understand about the bear – what a lovely treat! Happy reading:)

Yes, the bear water bottle will make more sense after I read the book, but I’m glad to know it’s not just a random bear, lol.

I’m sure you’re right about the US cover, this one is pretty spectacular, and it’s going to be hard to beat!

I’m glad you’re one of the Nevernight fans, I remember your review. I’m excited to start Godsgrave soon!

  2. Oh man where to start! I’m so excited you got Devil’s Call! And I always badly want to read Sebastien de Castell’s new YA, but no I don’t think it’s out in the US yet (*cry*) though interestingly enough, the audiobook is available at Audible and I’ve been thinking of dropping a credit on it. I am also hoping I could find some time to fit in Shattered Minds this summer, but I’m not sure that’s happening, lol. And I guess I was one of those on the fence about Nevernight, but it was fun and I can see myself perhaps checking out the sequel!

I’m super excited to read Devil’s Call, hopefully in the next few weeks. And I did take a peek inside Shattered Minds and it’s already hooked me, so I may have to read two books at once:-)

  3. Nice haul! I actually won The Waking Land from a Goodreads giveaway recently, so I’m planning to read it next after Like Water for Chocolate. And you said reviews have been all over the place for that book? Hmmmmmm.

I’ve got three new books to add to my shelves: A.J. Hartley’s Firebrand, Elizabeth May’s The Fallen Kingdom, and Victoria Schwab’s Our Dark Duet. Also, I read Assassin’s Apprentice by Robin Hobb recently, and a friend was so happy that I loved it that she actually bought me Books 2 and 3 of the Farseer Trilogy. (She’s a long-time RH fan.)

I would love to find time for Our Dark Duet and The Fallen Kingdom! Hopefully I’ll see them reviewed on your blog one day:-)

  4. Wonderful haul. I like the sounds of Geeks Actually too. I saw Borne on the list of new books my library just purchased so I’ m going to check it out eventually. I need to make time for Devil’s Call. Lots of good books here and yep, my TBR is growing.

I know, so many I can hardly stand it! I want to quit everything else in my life so I can read 24/7:-)

  5. I like Shattered Mind. A fantastic companion novel that revisits the world of False Hearts. This story follows Carina, a former brilliant scientist turned drug addict who lives out her murderous fantasies inside a drug-induced coma.

The description of Carina as a female Dexter is pretty accurate in terms of her dreams, but I found her real-world character arc ultimately much more compelling than Dexter’s rather lacklustre final seasons.

As with False Hearts, the world building in this story is dark and vivid. In some ways this is an even darker book, because it doesn’t have the loving twin bond element. I loved the pure sinisterness and bleakness of Lam’s highly technical world.

This is a separate story in the same world and can be read as a total standalone, although you get the benefit of knowing some of the characters in other contexts in False Hearts.

A perfect blend of psychological crime fiction and futuristic sci-fi worldbuilding.
