Waiting on Wednesday [249] – BENEATH THE SUGAR SKY by Seanan McGuire

Waiting on Wednesday is the brainchild of Breaking the Spine, although Jill isn’t hosting this meme anymore. In any case, I will continue to post Waiting on Wednesdays, simply because it’s one of my favorite posts to do each week:-D

I finished up one of the big projects I have working on, which has been taking me away from reading and blogging, but I still have a busy two weeks ahead of me. I have quite a few reviews that I need to write, so hopefully I’ll have the motivation to get to them soon. It’s been rough, my apathy about this blog has only been getting worse. I’m trying to muster some excitement but it’s hard. If anyone has any suggestions on how I can get back on track, I’d love to hear them!

What ISN’T hard, though, is continuing to be excited for upcoming releases! Like this one, whose cover was just revealed last week:

On January 9, 2018, Beneath the Sugar Sky, the third book in Seanan McGuire’s Wayward Children series, returns to Eleanor West’s Home for Wayward Children in a standalone contemporary fantasy for fans of all ages. At this magical boarding school, children who have experienced fantasy adventures are reintroduced to the “real” world.

When Rini lands with a literal splash in the pond behind Eleanor West’s Home for Wayward Children, the last thing she expects to find is that her mother, Sumi, who died years before Rini was even conceived. But Rini can’t let Reality get in the way of her quest—not when she has an entire world to save! (Much more common than one would suppose.)

If she can’t find a way to restore her mother, Rini will have more than a world to save: she will never have been born in the first place. And in a world without magic, she doesn’t have long before Reality notices her existence and washes her away. Good thing the student body is well-acquainted with quests…

Beneath the Sugar Sky is a tale of friendship, baking, and derring-do.

Warning: May contain nuts.

Beneath the Sugar Sky (Wayward Children #3) by Seanan McGuire. Releases in January 2018 from Tor.com. This cover is fantastic, something about this color combination is making me extremely happy:-) I recently read and loved book two in this series, Down Among the Sticks and Bones (review to come soon), and I’m already clamoring for more! I’m not sure if this is the final book or not, but I sincerely hope not because McGuire’s world is so rich, and there are so many characters we have yet to get to know really well.

My review of Every Heart a Doorway.

Are you reading this series? Let me know what you’re waiting for this week:-D

  1. One of the best series around if you ask me. That cover sure is rocking it but hey, I like anything with purple. It’s hard for me to decide which previous book I loved more but I’m sure this one will be great as well. Thanks for sharing it because I wasn’t aware it had a title or a cover yet!

Also glad there is an end in sight for you with all you’ve had going on lately.

I know how much we both love this series! I really do hope it goes beyond three books…

It’s definitely tempting to take a FULL break! I’m honestly afraid that I’ll enjoy the break so much I won’t come back:-/

I’ll definitely be reviewing it, but first I need to write my review of book #2:-)

  2. My five cents on how to get back on track? Don’t force yourself, let the current carry you and see where it leads, but don’t swim against it. It’s a moment, like we all experience in all facets of our lives, and the best way to weather it is to let it run its course.
The love of books will win out in the end… 🙂

Great advice, I know my love of books will never go away, so I shouldn’t worry so much:-) Thanks Maddalena!

Yes, I do want to find the fun again, rather than having blogging feel like such a chore. I just need to jump in a write one book review and I think I’ll rediscover why I loved it in the first place. Thanks Lisa!

  3. Welcome back, Tammy! Don’t feel too bad or stressed about things. My suggestion would be to reread some of your favorite books, the go-to ones that you have practically memorized. That might help. 😀

I’ve not heard of this book! I love the covers of all of the books in the series. I hope you enjoy this book when you get the chance to read it!

Have a lovely week, Tammy. =)

  4. Great book choice Tammy.
If you want my advice about the whole apathy thing – I think what makes me worse is when I get behind with book reviews. Part of me wants to read the books and I at least feel like I’m keeping on track with that aspect but then I get behind with the reviews and it makes me miserable because I’m a blogger who likes to strike – or review – while the iron is hot. I was considering this myself recently (because I was also behind), maybe doing a few shorter reviews to enable me to catch up – so still review the book but maybe stick to about 500 words instead of really elaborating on the plot (which is already in the blurb). I just think its maybe a way of catching up. I hate getting behind.
The other thing – because I was starting to feel a bit overwhelmed, is simply to request less books – I realise of course that you probably get sent a lot of unsolicited books but I’d just keep it simple. You already give the books a highlight in your ‘haul/on my plate’ posts and you simply can’t read them all. I feel like I’d like to strike more of a balance where I actually read some of my own books and be very selective about which books I review – it’s difficult though. Sorry, went into ‘essay’ mode there – I’ll just step away now.

I think my main problem is I feel so bad for all the review books I’ve let slip past, and it seems overwhelming to try to catch up. I have nearly stopped requesting books for the time being, so if I can get caught up a little, I think I’ll feel better. I hate not following through with things I promise, and so it’s hard to just let things go.

  5. What a great review! I loved Every Heart a Doorway, but haven’t yet got hold of Down Among the Sticks and Stones. Can you just focus on the books that you REALLY love reading and review the ones you want to? You do write excellent reviews.

Yes, that’s a good idea, I often feel bogged down by books I HAVE to read (as many of us do) so I will take that suggestion to heart:-)

  6. I like making book lists – highly anticipated books or top ten favorite lists, etc. They’re fun, not that much work, and the excitement either helps jump start the motivation again or keeps the spark burning so to speak.

And what a cover! I’m afraid I can’t look forward to this yet though, still gotta catch up! 😀
