Over-Booked [67] – A Book Haul Post

Welcome to Over-Booked, where I share my latest and greatest book acquisitions! I’m linking up with Stacking the Shelves over at Tynga’s Reviews and The Sunday Post at The Caffeinated Book Reviewer.

Some exciting books have made their way to me these past two weeks, including a couple of purchases and quite a few digital galleys! Here are my latest and greatest:

Royal Bastards by Andrew Shvarts is From Disney Hyperion, and I was thrilled to be offered a copy. I’ve read some very positive reviews, so this should be fun! Thank you Disney!

The Boy on the Bridge by M.R. Carey. This is one of my most anticipated books of the year, and I couldn’t be happier to see a copy come in the mail from the ever generous Orbit Books:-) I’ll be reading this very soon.

A Face Like Glass by Frances Hardinge was a surprise arrival, courtesy of Amulet Books! I have never read Hardinge, which is a crime, so I’m very much looking forward to correcting that and checking out her latest.

I preordered the BEAUTIFUL UK edition of Strange the Dreamer a few months ago (second from the left), and it arrived last week. Not only is it my favorite edition, but this one is signed by Laini Taylor, which was a nice surprise! Shortly after, I was offered a review copy from the publisher (the U.S. edition on the left), which I of course said yes to. I’m also hosting a giveaway next week for a cool Strange the Dreamer prize pack, so stop by on Tuesday for that! I’m loving this book so far, and my review should be up Monday.

The Ship by Antonia Honeywell arrived from Orbit Books, and I hope to dive into this soon! Thank you Orbit!

Final Girls by Mira Grant was a purchase from Subterranean Press, a small specialty publisher that I can’t seem to stop throwing money at, lol! This is a gorgeous hardcover novella, signed and numbered, and this photo doesn’t begin to do it justice.

Digital review copies:

The Queen of Swords by R.S. Belcher. I requested this from Tor, even though I hadn’t really seen any review copies floating around the internet, and I was thrilled when the publicist sent me a NetGalley invite. This is one of my MOST anticipated books this year, Belcher’s continuing Golgatha saga (Book #3).

The Refrigerator Monologues by Catherynne M. Valente. Yes, this looks like a graphic novel, but no, it’s not. But it does have illustrations scattered throughout. I adore Valente and I can’t wait to read this.

Truthers by Geoffrey Girard. I read Girard’s Project Cain a few years ago and loved his gritty storytelling, and I very excited to read his latest. As far as I can tell, this is a thriller that explores the conspiracies surrounding 9/11. I’m intrigued…

The Dispatcher by John Scalzi. I was very happy to be approved for this novella from Subterranean Press! I’ve read some very good reviews, and I understand it’s a little different from Scalzi’s normal stories.

In the Valley of the Sun by Andy Davidson. I just featured this on Waiting on Wednesday this week, and behold, I tracked it down on Edelweiss! Dark vampire tale (I think…)

Only the Dead Know Brooklyn by Chris Vola. Another vampire story that takes place in, yep, Brooklyn. I’m all over anything that reminds me of The Suicide Motor Club.

Amatka by Karin Tidbeck. Tidbeck is the author of a short story collection called Jagganath, which some of you may know. I enjoyed the few stories I read in that collection, and I’m curious to read more. This is her debut novel.

Big thanks to Tor, Saga Press, Vintage, Subterranean Press, Carolrhoda Lab, Skyhorse Publishing and Thomas Dunne Books:-)

And a trio of new Tor.com novellas:

Big thanks to Tor.com for three new novellas, which all look amazing: Starfire: A Red Peace by Spencer Ellsworth, The Lamb Will Slaughter the Lion by Margaret Killjoy, and The Five Daughters of the Moon by Leena Likitalo.

In other news, did you hear that the title has been revealed for the third book in The Illuminae Files series??? Jay Kristoff and Amie Kaufman are holding a very cool presale promotion: if you pre-order Obsidio by May 1st and send in proof of purchase, you’ll be in the running to have your name added to the casualty list! Brilliant presale scheme, right? Well, it sure worked on me. I pre-ordered my copy today:-) You can too, here’s the link to Jay’s website that has all the deets. The promotion only goes until May 1, so hurry!

And that’s it for me this week! Let me know if you have any of these books on your TBR:-D

Thanks Sarah, I do feel I got lucky this week. But then again I do try to choose my books carefully:-)

Agreed, Valente is pretty consistent. Yeah, for some reason the Golgotha book isn’t getting a lot of press yet. Which is a shame, it’s a great series.

Yes, that Obsidio contest is definitely gallows humor. They did the same thing for the last book, so I thought it would be fun to take a shot at. I was going to preorder the book anyway:-)

  2. Such a great batch of books! I’d love to get my hands on The Refrigerator Monologues, Royal Bastards, and The Boy on the Bridge.

  3. I can’t wait to read Royal Bastards! And The Queen of Swords looks great too. And I did see that cover for Obsidio this week- haing just finished Gemina I am now VERY anxious for the next one!

I think The Ship might be on NetGalley, although I’m not sure about that. I’m super excited to read my new vamp stories, especially Only the Dead Know Brooklyn:-)

  4. I just finished my vacation, what a week it’s been while I was away! I totally missed the Illuminae book 3 announcement, and what a cool promotion, haha. I don’t know if I like the idea of seeing my name on a casual list though 😛

I should have copies of Boy on the Bridge and The Ship waiting for me when I collect my mail too, and I’m so excited!

  5. You have some BEAUTIFUL books this week! I am so jealous! I just saw the UK cover of Strange the Dreamer recently and I love it! A Face Like Glass looks good, and I’m intrigued by Final Girls enough that I’m off to check it out on Goodreads. Have a great week, and you can check out my Sunday Post in the link below!

  6. For the Golgotha series, do you need to read them in order? Or are they more of a series of companions set in the same world? The Queen of Swords looks and sounds awesome, but the first two books I’m not sold on. These are some pretty awesome-looking books though! Enjoy.
