Twelve 2017 Young Adult SFF Books I’m Looking Forward To

Top Ten Tuesday is hosted by The Broke and the Bookish, where each week bloggers are given a top ten theme to blog about. Because they are on a bit of a hiatus, this week is “freebie” week.

It seems like Book World is exploding with new YA speculative fiction titles, and a quick check of my Goodreads TBR confirms that fact. Here is a short list of upcoming YA titles I can’t wait to read! Many of these won’t be released until the fall, so you’ll have a bit of a wait. But there is plenty to get excited about!

The Hush by Skye Melki-Wegner. Releases in June from Sky Pony Press. I love this cover, and I also love stories that use music in their world building. And I officially dub Skye as having the BEST author name I’ve ever heard! (go ahead, say it out loud)

Zero Repeat Forever by G.S. Prendergast. Releases in August from Simon & Schuster Books for Young Readers. This sci-fi adventure sounds really good, and I’m always on the lookout for fresh SF young adult:-D

Nyxia by Scott Reintgen. Releases in September from Crown Books for Young Readers. This sounds like it could be fun, although the blurb is very short at the moment. Maybe inspired by The Hunger Games?

Even the Darkest Stars by Heather Fawcett. Releases in September from Balzer + Bray. Wow, I’m loving the sound of this book! Set in a fictional Himalayan setting, featuring mountain climbing!

An Enchantment of Ravens by Margaret Rogerson. Releases in September from Margaret K. McElderry Books. This sounds AMAZING. I believe this is a debut, and it appears to be a stand-alone as well. And check out the GORGEOUS cover!

Odd & True by Cat Winters. Releases in September from Amulet Books. Monster slaying teens, a young protagonist with a disability, and a trademark Cat Winters historical setting? Throw in a beautiful cover and you have a winner, in my opinion:-D

Freefall by Joshua David Bellin. Releases in September from Margaret K. McElderry Books. The description for this book is pretty long, and it starts out sounding like a typical teen sci-fi romance, but it definitely catches my attention by the end of the blurb.

Black Bird of the Gallows by Meg Kassel. Releases in September from Entangled Publishing. This dark fantasy sounds really good, and seems to have a paranormal angle to it.

Last Star Burning by Caitlin Sangster. Releases in October from Simon Pulse. I’m intrigued by the story this cover is telling, and I can’t wait to read this:-D

Gray Wolf Island by Tracey Neithercott. Releases in October from Knopf Books for Young Readers. This book already has a perfect five-star average on Goodreads, and that alone gets me excited to read it. Plus, a treasure hunt! With magic!

Devils & Thieves by Jennifer Rush. Releases in October from Little, Brown Books for Young Readers. Urban fantasy for the YA crowd, with a motorcycle gang! Sign me up…

The Dark Intercept by Julia Keller. Releases in November from Tor Teen. I love covers with upside-down cityscapes/landscapes, so this one is a win for me. This is the start of a new YA sci-fi series, and I think it sounds like a lot of fun.

This list could have been longer, but I’ll stop at twelve:-D Let me know if you have any of these on your TBR:-D

  1. I like those covers so much! Like, all of them are so nice. Judging by your description, I think I will check out Hush, Freefall and Gray Wolf Island.

Do you have any sources you read/check for upcoming books, or do you just browse NetGalley/Calalogs etc?

  2. I’ve become rather wary of YA fantasy and sci-fi in general, but I do love the sound of some the titles that you’ve mentioned here.

The cover of An Enchantment of Ravens is so stunning and Devils & Thieves sounds amazing! Cannot wait for Nyxia and I really hope Even the Darkest Stars doesn’t disappoint.

  3. YA seems to be getting better covers these days. The Dark Intercept one especially. As always with YA though, I will wait until reviews are raving about them because I just can’t pick through the weeds and come up with the good ones on my own.

So far these all have very strong ratings on Goodreads, which is one of my metrics for deciding what I want to read. But hey, I get it. Life’s too short to read a bad book, lol:-)

  4. I’d heard about An Enchantment of Ravens when the author’s book deal was announced last year (the book had a different title then), and within a fingersnap it was on my wishlist. 😉 But The Hust, Darkest Stars, and Last Star Burning… I hadn’t heard of those before, and they also sound intriguing. But new YA fantasy and I have had a rocky relationship lately, so I might wait until I see reviews before jumping on any of these titles.

  5. Oh my goodness. Thank heavens your list wasn’t longer because I added 7 of these to my wishlist (although to be truthful I already had Black Bird of the Gallows on it). The cover for An Enchantment of Ravens is gorgeous and I’ve not seen a lot of these before. This was definitely a dangerous stop for me to make today – haha.

  6. Wow, I haven’t heard of any of these! I’ll be honest though – I tend to be wary of YA fiction since it seems like a lot of it is really heavy on the romance angst, which I hate.
