Waiting on Wednesday [238] – RUIN OF ANGELS (CRAFT SEQUENCE #6) by Max Gladstone

Waiting on Wednesday is the brainchild of Breaking the Spine, although Jill isn’t hosting this meme anymore. In any case, I will continue to post Waiting on Wednesdays, simply because it’s one of my favorite posts to do each week:-D

I had heard the news about Max Gladstone’s Craft Sequence moving over to Tor.com, but I didn’t realize it was happening this year! Cue excitement, and also check out the cover redesign!

Quick edit: Just found the article I read about the Craft Sequence moving to Tor.com, for those of you who are interested:-)

Max Gladstone returns with The Ruin of Angels, the sixth novel in the Craft Sequence, which The Washington Post calls “the best kind of urban fantasy” and NPR calls “sharp, original, and passionate”

The God Wars destroyed the city of Alikand. Now, a century and a half and a great many construction contracts later, Agdel Lex rises in its place. Dead deities litter the surrounding desert, streets shift when people aren’t looking, a squidlike tower dominates the skyline, and the foreign Iskari Rectification Authority keeps strict order in this once-independent city―while treasure seekers, criminals, combat librarians, nightmare artists, angels, demons, dispossessed knights, grad students, and other fools gather in its ever-changing alleys, hungry for the next big score.

Priestess/investment banker Kai Pohala (last seen in Full Fathom Five) hits town to corner Agdel Lex’s burgeoning nightmare startup scene, and to visit her estranged sister Lei. But Kai finds Lei desperate at the center of a shadowy, and rapidly unravelling, business deal. When Lei ends up on the run, wanted for a crime she most definitely committed, Kai races to track her sister down before the Authority finds her first. But Lei has her own plans, involving her ex-girlfriend, a daring heist into the god-haunted desert, and, perhaps, freedom for an occupied city. Because Alikand might not be completely dead―and some people want to finish the job.

Ruin of Angels (Craft Sequence #6) by Max Gladstone. Releases in September 2017 from Tor.com. I usually don’t like cover redesigns, but I can see why they would want to start fresh, moving sideways to a different publisher (from Tor to Tor.com is sideways, IMO!) And wow, do I love this cover! Honestly, it couldn’t be more different from the original covers. Which makes me wonder, is Tor.com going to redesign and re-release the first five books?

Are you reading this series? Let me know what you’re waiting on this week:-D

Yes, this was a surprise! The cover is SO different from the original covers, which I also love.

  1. I’m so excited for a new Craft Sequence book! I’ll admit, I’ve been worried about the financial success of the series. Possibly that’s why it was shuffled from Tor to Tor.com? I’m just happy I’m getting another Craft Sequence book, and I hope that there’ll be more in the future.

I don’t know, I feel like Tor is the bigger publisher and has more resources for marketing (I could be wrong), so I feel like the switch is for a different reason. I’m also thinking they have more books in the series planned, otherwise why go to all that trouble?

      • I think he was planning on doing mainly novellas for it from now on? If so, I’ll miss when we got full books…

  2. I read the first two so need to catch up – and wow to that cover -it’s nothing like the original ones in fact I had to do a double take when I realised it was part of the same series.

  3. Wow, I’d heard there was going to be a sixth novel, but this is quite a change – new publisher and new cover design. I’m not sure I like the new look, but I’m definitely excited about more books! (Though I still need to catch up with the last one :P)

Oh yeah! I didn’t notice that until you mentioned it. Weird. I’m curious about the whole switch, I feel like I’ve read an interview with Gladstone somewhere that explained it. I’ll have to look it up.

I agree, this cover is the complete opposite of the Tor covers, which I am very fond off, btw. But I do love this cover, but maybe not for this series…

Yeah, I’m not sure why the switch, but it’s such a great series. Maybe more readers will discover it now.

  4. Wow, that’s a crazy switch! Hadn’t heard about it, so thanks for the heads up. I like the cover, but I really loved the old ones, too…Hm. And as Mogsy said, the numbered names always sounded so cool. I picked them up because, well, how could I not read something titled “Three Parts Dead”? Haha. Well, I loved the first two books, so I definitely need to catch up 🙂 Thanks for the WoW!

  5. I know I left you a comment on this one but it doesn’t seem to be here – I think my computer is having a funny turn and eating the comments I leave (why oh why!)
I need to catch up with this series. I did read the first two.
And what a change in style – I never would have guessed it was the same series going off the cover.
    Lynn 😀
