Over-Booked [64] – A Book Haul Post

Welcome to Over-Booked, where I share my latest and greatest book acquisitions! I’m linking up with Stacking the Shelves over at Tynga’s Reviews and The Sunday Post at The Caffeinated Book Reviewer.

Well, the floodgates have burst open these last two weeks. I’m not sure what happened! Usually I go three weeks between book hauls, but publishers have been extremely generous lately so I wanted to jump in and share my latest. I also purchased a couple of REALLY cool books, so let’s get to it!

Physical books for review:

With thanks to Orbit, Tachyon Publications, Tor Books, Saga Press, and Blackstone Publishing!

Kings of the Wyld by Nicholas Eames. I received a bounty from Orbit Books last week, and this was part of the package. I’ve already seen some great reviews, and I hear this is very funny too.

Wicked Wonders by Ellen Klages. This is a short story collection, and I have to say the blurb makes me want to read these right now! This is a May release so you won’t see a review for a while, but I may sneak in a couple stories early anyway:-)

Miranda and Caliban by Jacqueline Carey. A wonderful surprise finished copy from Tor that I wasn’t expecting! I just finished my NetGalley copy and wow, I really loved this retelling of The Tempest. Look for my review on Monday.

Phantom Pains (The Arcadia Project #2) by Mishell Baker. I’m SUPER excited to have this in my hands! I loved Borderland last year and I can’t wait to get back into Baker’s unique urban fantasy world.

Fata Morgana by Steven R. Boyett and Ken Mitchroney. So excited that my old friend Steve has a new book coming out! I’m a big fan, and not just because I know him:-) This is a June release, but I suspect I’ll be reading it sooner than that.

Bane and Shadow (Empire of Storms #2) by John Skovron. OK, I’m cheating a bit because I haven’t read Hope and Red BUT I fully intend to. I may be a bit behind since this book just came out this past week, but never fear, I’ll be reading both books in the next few months.

With thanks to Big Honcho Media, Tor Books, Wunderkind PR, Saga Press and Orbit Books!

Humans, Bow Down by James Patterson. You probably never thought you’d see a James Patterson book on this blog (I certainly didn’t!) but here it is! Big Honcho Media was kind enough to send me a copy, and I’ll be hosting a giveaway in a couple of weeks.

Game of Shadows by Erika Lewis. I featured this as a Waiting on Wednesday some time ago, and so I’m thrilled to have a review copy! It’s also getting great reviews, so I can’t wait to read it.

The Sudden Appearance of Hope by Claire North. Another Orbit goody, this is the paperback release of a book that came out last year. I’ve been hearing wonderful things about North, and I knew I wanted to read her at some point.

Thunderbird (Miriam Black #4) by Chuck Wendig. OK, a publicist at Wunderkind PR assured me that I can read this without reading the first three Miriam Black books. And you know what? I’m going to take a shot at that. Although I know there are people out there that are going to try to talk me out of it:-)

Bookburners by Max Gladstone, Margaret Dunlap, Mur Lafferty and Brian Francis Slattery. You guys, this book is a MONSTER. It’s a lethal weapon, is what it is. I actually started reading Bookburners when it was being serialized by Serial Box, and I really enjoyed the two or three episodes that I read. But this should be a much more satisfying experience, reading all sixteen episodes in one fell swoop!

Purchased:

Metronome by Oliver Langmead. I ADORED this book, my second from Langmead, and I knew I had to have my very own copy. If you missed my review, you can check it out here.

The Little Homo Sapiens Scientist by S.L. Huang. I was so excited when this little package arrived in the mail from the UK! Published by Book Smugglers Publishing, this short chapbook-like story is a dark retelling of The Little Mermaid. It’s a beautiful little book and one of only 500 copies.

Digital copies for review:

A new trio of novellas from Tor.com just arrived! Greedy Pigs (Sin du Jour #5) by Matt Wallace, All Systems Red by Martha Wells and Mapping the Interior by Stephen Graham Jones. I’m all caught up and ready for more Sin du Jour action from Matt Wallace, and I can’t wait to finally read something by Martha Wells. Stephen Graham Jones is a well-known horror writer that I’m very familiar with from my “before blogging” days, and this looks great. Thank you to Tor.com!

The Changeling by Victor LaValle. I JUST featured this on Waiting on Wednesday, and I stumbled upon it on NetGalley (filed under “General Fiction” for some reason!). Thanks to Spiegel & Grau.

Borrowed Souls by Chelsea Mueller. I grabbed this as soon as I saw it on Edelweiss. I featured this in a top ten list last year, and it sounds like my kind of story. (Wait, is that a flask in her pocket??) Thank you Talos!

And that’s a wrap! I’d love to hear if you’re planning on reading any of these books:-D

  1. I’m so jealous you have Phantom Pains already. It’s interesting that they went with this cover instead of another one I saw where the face was flipped to look down. Anyway, i hope you enjoy the book!

I am also very curious about Miranda and Caliban. I loved Carey’s Kushiel books and I think The Tempest is one of the best Shakespeare plays for twisted retellings. Can’t wait to read your review. 🙂

And of course I hope you love The Little Homo Sapiens Scientist as much as I did. It may only be a small book but it leaves a big impression.

Yeah, I noticed they changed the cover of Phantom Pains too. I did think the first cover was a little strange, the way she’s hovering over the landscape, so I think this one works better. And believe me, I feel incredibly lucky that I have a copy.

Yeah, series are tricky. It’s hard to get excited about a book in the middle if you aren’t reading that series. I’m very excited to start Kings of the Wyld!

  2. Oooh, can’t wait to read your review of Miranda and Caliban! I also got two brand new books this week: Dawn Study by Maria V. Snyder, and Norse Mythology by Neil Gaiman.

I know, this is a very mixed bag of a book haul. I don’t like to stick to only one genre, because then everything starts to feel the same:-)

I’m a little nervous about starting book #4 without reading the others, but I was told I could. I’m going to give it a shot:-)

I’ve haven’t heard a lot about Borrowed Souls but I do love urban fantasy and this one is calling to me:-)

    • Tammy

I guess we both know that we both loved Miranda and Caliban:-) And yes, Borrowed Souls seems like it’s going to be a ton of fun!

  3. As much as I admire Serial Box’s ambitious format, reading an entire season all at once really is the way to go imo. To be fair I also feel the same way regarding TV series and such, I just prefer to binge and don’t like to wait a week between episodes 🙂 As big as Bookburners is though, I felt like the pages just flew by! Sign of a very enjoyable book, I hope you like it! 😀 Also really excited about getting Greedy Pigs, but I need to quickly catch up with the last book first, lol!

I was shocked at the huge size of Bookburners, but I have actually read the first couple of stories (although I will reread them), so it’s nice to hear the pages fly by:-)

I’ve read some very good reviews of Game of Shadows, so it makes me even more excited to read it. Thanks for visiting, Alyssa!

  4. Nice haul!! What generous publishers! I’m totally planning to read Bookburners and Fata Morgana. I just got the former from my library and the latter from Netgalley! Yay 😀

  5. Wicked Wonders! VERY excited to see what you think of that one. And oooh Phantom Pains. I have yet to get my hands on Borderline but I really need to make that a priority. Sounds fantastic and right up my alley. So many books! Happy reading!

  6. Meigan

I get heart-eyes every time I read/look at book hauls, haha 🙂 So many good ones in those pictures! Have you read/started Borrowed Souls yet? I’m really excited for it, it sounds fantastic.

    • Tammy

I haven’t, I can’t remember what month it’s coming out, but I know it’s very soon. I’m super excited too!
