Thirteen 2016 Books I Still Haven’t Read

Top Ten Tuesday is hosted by The Broke and the Bookish, where bloggers are given a bookish top ten theme each week to blog about. This week, we’re talking about reading regrets, specifically the books we meant to read last year but just couldn’t manage. Story of my life! I went through my physical stacks and pulled as many books as I could that I intended to read—either for review or pleasure—but life got in the way.

Review books. I’m sorry, publishers!

Bite by K.S. Merbeth. I was so excited to get a copy of this from Orbit, but what happened, Tammy? I AM going to read this before the sequel, Raid, comes out this year. Swear.

The Empty Ones by Robert Brockway. I was actually on the blog tour for this book (I did an interview with the author) and yet I never found time to actually read the book.

Steeplejack by A.J. Hartley. This came unsolicited from Tor, but I was thrilled because it was already on my TBR at the time. The sequel comes out this year, so hopefully I can catch up first:-)

Red Right Hand by Levi Black. I specifically requested this from Tor, and yet. Yes, I’m working on requesting fewer books, one of my big goals for this year!

Cloudbound by Fran Wilde. This also came unsolicited from Tor, and I was super excited because I really enjoyed Updraft. I do plan on reading this soon.

The Star-Touched Queen by Roshani Chokshi. Not only did I get this from NetGalley, but I received a physical review copy from the publisher. So double fail? I’d love to read this as well before the sequel comes out.

Books I got at Comic Con.

Comic Con is always a fantastic book event for speculative fiction, and I managed to get some awesome titles this past year, many of them signed. But review books always take a front seat for me, so these all got pushed to the side.

Invasive by Chuck Wendig. I didn’t get this at Comic Con (it was a purchase) but I did meet Chuck there, so there you go. Although I’m terrified of ants, I do love everything I’ve read by Wendig so I hope to read this at some point.

Dead Souls by J. Lincoln Fenn. I truly intended to review this, because it was on my TBR long before I went to Comic Con. I’ve read some great reviews, too, so I must try to read this.

Underground Airlines by Ben H. Winters. I got to meet Winters at the Hatchette booth, and he was so nice! I know many people who loved this book.

Hope and Red by John Skovron. Signed from the Orbit booth! And boy did I want to read this. The sequel comes out this year (another one!) so I’ll try to squeeze this in.

The Hike by Drew Magary. I fully intend to read this soon, simply because I feel like it’s “my” kind of story.

Ghost Talkers by Mary Robinette Kowal. I met Kowal at the Tor booth, and later Tor sent me a finished copy of this book, so I feel terrible for not reading it:-(

The Reader by Traci Chee. I didn’t meet the author, but I did snag a copy of the ARC at the Penguin booth. I’ve read amazing reviews of this book!

How about you? Were there any books you meant to read last year but just didn’t get to?

Yep, me too, my shelves ARE full of books I haven’t read! There’s a word for that, collecting books and never reading them. (I can’t think of it right now, but it’s a Japanese word.)

They do! The publishers are very generous. It’s not quite like BEA but I usually end up with about 40-50 books and ARCs. Meeting many of the authors is also a bonus:-)

Out of those three, The Reader tops my list. Good to know, Sara, I’ll definitely try to make time for them!

  1. Out of those, I’d really love to read the hike. I requested it, but it didn’t get answered. But I’m sure I’ll read it one day because the premise sounds amazing!
Then there’s also the Ghost Talkers, I think I’ve marked that one as to-read as well.

The Hike is a book I was turned down for on Edelweiss, but then I got a copy at Comic Con. Definitely going to read it soon!

  2. Red Right Hand is on my wishlist and I recently hunted down a copy of Steeplejack which I hope to get to this year. As for what I didn’t get to, hmmm didn’t catch up with enough series, didn’t read enough in some of my favourite genres, didn’t catch up on enough ebooks…the list is kind of endless! I plan to be productive this year!

Me too, I’m trying to be more focused on reading, instead of hanging out on Facebook and Instagram! Good luck!

I honestly haven’t heard that much about The Reader, I guess it’s one of those underappreciated books. Hope to show some love for it soon:-)

  3. I’d also love to read a number of these books, too, Tammy – particularly Steeplejack and Cloudbound. The Star-Touched Queen is a lovely, luscious read with some memorable characters. I hope you get to read some of these soon. Have a great reading week:)

  4. Ah, Hope and Red! Every times I saw one of the glowing reviews for this book I told myself “this one comes next”, only to be distracted by some other… siren song.
Although, to be truthful, there are many interesting titles in your stack as well… See? It’s impossible to keep one’s schedule!! 😀

I could say that about each book in this pile, all books I’ve heard amazing things about and NEED to read.

  5. So many of these are on my list, too! Bite, Steeplejack, Hope and Red and Ghost Talkers. Only Ghost Talkers made it to the official list since I could only mention some of the releases.

I really like the cover of The Hike but no idea what it’s about!

Ha ha, I think Hike is one of those very strange stories that’s hard to describe. But I’ve heard really good things about it!

  6. Updraft is still on my list of 2015 regrets 😉 But at least if I leave it a bit longer I guess I can read the whole trilogy at once, as I seem to have fluked into with V E Schwab’s Shades of Magic?

    • Tammy

I have lots of series that are the same for me. Totally missed them and now I might as well wait until they’re complete:-)

  7. A lovely stack of books – some I’ve read and some I want to! Never enough time – even when you have the best intentions.
    Lynn 😀

  8. A lot of these are fantastic books, I’m honestly torn as to where to recommend starting! The only ones I haven’t read on there are Cloudbound and Dead Souls. I can’t believe I forgot to put Fran Wilde on my own list, I did the same thing this last Christmas with pulling out books and putting them in a stack on my nightstand so I could remind myself these are the books I want to catch up with, and Cloudbound is front and center. Book three is apparently on the horizon (no pun intended!)
