Over-Booked [62] – A Book Haul Post

Welcome to Over-Booked, where I share my most recent book acquisitions! I’m linking up with Stacking the Shelves and The Sunday Post, so head on over to those blogs to see other book haul posts.

Lots of digital review copies this week! And just a couple of physical books. So far I’m AHEAD with review books, since I’m on my SIXTH January book so far, which isn’t bad considering it’s only January 7th! (Obviously, I started reading January books in December.) I hope to continue this trend by reading at least two books the month before they come out. It really takes some of the stress off blogging.

Here are my newest books:

Physical books:

I’m SO EXCITED to have won a giveaway over at Bookwraiths! This awesome giveaway included signed copies of both Beyond Redemption and The Mirror’s Truth by Michael R. Fletcher, a series I’ve been wanting to read since Beyond Redemption received so many great reviews last year. Thank you to both Michael R. Fletcher and Wendell over at Bookwraiths!

The Last Harvest by Kim Liggett, with thanks to Tor Books. I’ve already read this, and my review will be up Monday. This book—it’s horror, but it went beyond what I expected from a teen horror novel. I really enjoyed it, although I’m still having nightmares, thanks Kim!

Yes, I had to. I rushed out to buy a copy of The Princess Diarist right after the terrible tragedy of Carrie Fisher’s death. I loved Wishful Drinking, and I’m so sad this amazingly funny woman won’t be writing any more books:-(

Black Light Express by Philip Reeve. Yes, I had to! The minute I learned that the sequel to Railhead had already been published in the UK, I hopped over to the Book Depository and bought a copy. I’ll be squeezing this into my reading schedule in the next couple of months. I’m so excited!

Digital review books:

Let’s start with two HIGHLY anticipated 2017 reads! City of Miracles by Robert Jackson Bennett is the finale to his Divine Cities trilogy. I’m glad to see that Sigrud will be front and center in this story.

Brimstone by Cherie Priest will be my second Priest book, after loving The Family Plot. So happy to have been approved for this! Thank you Ace:-D

Ararat by Christopher Golden. Take a look at this cover. This is what the California mountains are going to look like in about a week, after a huge storm hits! Thanks to St. Martin’s Press for the review copy.

Empress of a Thousand Skies by Rhoda Belleza. I was excited to find this on Edelweiss, after I had listed it in my Top Ten Debuts of 2017. Thanks to Razorbill:-)

The Sandcastle Empire by Kayla Olson. This was another book from my debuts list. Thanks to HarperTeen!

Dear Sweet Filthy World by Caitlin R. Kiernan. I’ve had my eye on this short story collection for a while, so I was very happy to get an approval on NetGalley from Subterranean.

Pseudotooth by Verity Holloway. Thanks to the fine folks at Unsung Stories for pitching this to me. I’m loving the cover SO much, and the story sounds just odd enough for my tastes:-)

The Gentleman’s Guide to Vice and Virtue by Mackenzi Lee. I loved Lee’s first book, and I was thrilled to see her new one is set in 18th century Europe and has “intrigue and romance.” Thank you Katherine Tegen Books:-)

And finally, a trio of Tor.com novellas: Chalk by Paul Cornell, Buffalo Soldier by Maurice Broaddus and Killing Gravity by Corey J. White. Thank you Tor.com! I’m especially excited about Chalk🙂

That’s my book haul. Are you planning to read any of these?

  1. I want to read Ararat and seeing so many funny quotes around makes me interested in reading Carrie Fisher’s books too. What happened to her and her mother over Christmas was so sad. I read Postcards from the edge many years back but don’t remember what I thought of it-and I’ve never seen the film, which is strange because I LOVE Meryl Streep!

    • Tammy

I read Postcards years ago when it came out, and I saw the movie as well. I remember really enjoying it. What I love the most from Carrie Fisher is her stand up comedy shows, because she’s so funny when she speaks!

    • Tammy

Everyone I know who’s read it really loved it, so I am going to definitely squeeze it in among all the review books:-)

    • Tammy

I’ve read a few of Christopher Golden’s older books, but it’s been years, so I’m very curious to see how he’s writing these days.

  2. Amazing haul this week! I’m really excited about Empress of a Thousand Skies, I hope you’ll enjoy it! Happy reading!

  3. Grats on being ahead with your reads! That is amazing, such stats and you’re still weary of challenges? You could beat one in a blink 🙂

You truly so get stormed with ARCs though, don’t you? I’m just curious, do you request them, or are you at the point where publishers are requesting you already? Either way, I have no idea how you manage with so many 🙂 do you have Hermione’s magical clock? 🙂

I request all the digital ARCs myself, and then sometimes I get approved and sometimes I don’t. This is a lot, I don’t normally get this many ARCs all at once, although it has been three weeks since I last did a book haul post.

      • The reason I was asking was because I wondered if you’re just like me and would get yourself into so much trouble willingly 😀 I guess you are! Well, good luck getting through all those, that’s a lot of reading 🙂 will be waiting for your reviews!

  4. I just saw that amazon is actually sold out of The Princess Diarist! Crazy. I put a hold for the audiobook at my library.. thought it’d be fun to listen to her narration. Will have to pick up wishful drinking now too!

Ha. The cover of Ararat… that’s what the Sierras look like NOW. Looking forward to your thoughts on that one. I read Snowblind by Golden and wasn’t quite as creeped out as I had hoped.

Dang, tons of books! Hope you end up loving these. 🙂

  5. I have a copy of Beyond Redemption, I’ve heard great things about it but I’m always hesitant to pick it up since it sounds very dark and crazy. If I’m ever in the mood for grimdark fantasy, I’ll know what to read! :p
I saw the Caitlin R. Kiernan short story collection Netgalley but I managed not to request it because, as much as I like reading anthologies, they’re a real pain to review.. I will look forward to your thoughts on this one! 😉

    • Tammy

Ha ha, I know what you mean about reviewing short story collections. I actually have to be in the mood for them, so I try not to request too many during the year.

    • Tammy

It’s so different from what I normally read but maybe that’s why I’m looking forward to it:-)

  6. I want to read Fisher’s latest novel too. I don’t usually read biographies or autobiographies of actors/actresses/”famous” people, but her story… I would love to experience this latest novel.

I got The Sandcastle Empire and Empress of a Thousand Skies as well! I’m excited to read both, because science fiction, YAY. 😀 I hope you enjoy all of your new books, Tammy!

Thanks for visiting my blog! Have a wonderful weekend. =)

I NEVER read autobiographies, but because I’ve seen her stage shows, and she is hysterically funny, I wanted to experience more of that with The Princess Diarist. Thanks for stopping by, Alyssa!

  7. I tried to read Boneshaker by Cherie Priest a few years ago, and did not like it. However, I really like the double meaning of her title “Family Plot” and with the cover of “Brimstone” being so beautiful, I might give the author a second go.

    • Tammy

I’ve heard mixed reviews for Boneshaker but I haven’t read it myself. I do know I loved Family Plot, so I’m looking forward to reading more by her!

  8. Nice, it’s always fun to be ahead of the game. And winning a giveaway, too, how nice! I recently won one of those SOMEWHERE, too XD XD Thanks again for that. Made my whole weekend!

Anyhoo, awesome book stash! I’ve got my eye on a couple of those, too, especially Blacklight Express and Empress of a Thousand Skies. But I’ve also heard such great things about Michael Fletcher’s books. Can’t wait to read your reviews!!

  9. Nice selection. City of Miracles is one I’d really like to read. I’d be curious to hear what you think of it. Ararat sounds interesting, as well. I’ve not read anything by Christopher Golden.

    • Tammy

Christopher Golden has been writing for YEARS and I was surprised to see Ararat because I haven’t heard his name mentioned in a long time.

    • Tammy

Empress of a Thousand Skies seems to be one of the “big” YA books this year. Thanks for visiting, Lisa:-)

  10. I think I’ll eventually read the Carrie Fisher books. I was never a huge fan but always liked her. Plus, she is pretty much an icon for my generation. I watched a little of the HBO special on her and her mother last night. It’s odd how they filmed it so close to both of them passing. I can’t wait to read The Last Harvest and I’ll admit, I’m a tad jealous you got Brimstone. I may have to contact ACE and see if I can get a copy as well. Great haul!

I’m really excited to watch the HBO special, but I don’t think I have HBO?? Hmmm might need to get it just to see that. I got Brimstone on NetGalley and honestly wasn’t expecting to get approved. I’m sure you’ll be a shoe-in, you should request it!

  11. Ooh, enjoy Michael R. Fletcher. His books are definitely something else 🙂

Also, I just finished The Last Harvest and wow wow wow wow wow, that ending. You’re right, it went beyond what I was expecting…the author didn’t hold back there at all, did she?!

I was also recently offered an audio review copy of Carrie Fisher’s book, and even though I don’t normally do non-fiction I am tempted. It is narrated by her and her daughter which is awesome, but I think listening to her might just make me more sad that this fine talented woman is no longer with us 🙁

I’m looking forward to your review of The Last Harvest:-) I think I’d enjoy listening to Carrie and her daughter narrate The Princess Diarist, even though it would be heartbreaking, I do love listening to her. Her one woman shows are so funny!

  12. City of Miracles is all Sigrud? *RUNS TO NETGALLEY* *REMEMBERS I HATE E-BOOKS* *CRIES IN THE CORNER FOR A WHILE*

The Princess Diarist is really good. I’ve been reading it a few pages at a time, because it is the last one, and every time I pick it up I want to cry.

    • Tammy

I’m with you, I prefer paper ARCS to NetGalley:-) Glad you’re enjoying The Princess Diarist, I will try to read without crying:-(
