Ten 2017 Debuts I’m Looking Forward To

Top Ten Tuesday is hosted by the Broke and the Bookish, where each week bloggers are given a different top ten theme to blog about. This week it’s 2017 debuts! This list was harder to come up with than I thought it would be, but I’ve managed to find five YA and five adult debuts that I’m pretty excited about. In some cases, these authors may have short stories or self published works out there, but I’m including them as these are traditionally published debuts:

Five YA Debuts:

Gilded Cage by Vic James. I’m not 100% sure this is YA, but it seems to be popping up on lots of YA lists, so I’m going with it. Whatever the age group, it’s already got some great reviews.

The Sandcastle Empire by Kayla Olson. Wow, so many positive reviews already for this book. Post apocalyptic with a dash of Lord of the Flies!

Empress of a Thousand Skies by Rhoda Belleza. I just put in a request for this on Edelweiss, so we’ll see what happens. I’ve mentioned this book in several recent posts, and it remains one of my most anticipated YAs this year.

Song of the Current by Sarah Tolcser. I chose this because I love the idea of river gods, and a fantasy that takes place near the water.

The Wood by Chelsea Bobulski. One of my favorite tropes is fantasy/horror stories that take place in or near the woods, and this one looks really good.

Five Adult Debuts:

Spaceman of Bohemia by Jaroslav Kalfar. This seems more literary than science fiction, but sometimes that’s a good thing. I’m very excited to read this!

The Bear and the Nightingale by Katherine Arden. I got a copy of this at Comic Con, so technically it’s not a review book. But I am going to try to squeeze it in if I can.

An Alchemy of Masques and Mirrors by Curtis Craddock. Steampunk with math! I love the sound of this story, and the cover isn’t too shabby either:-)

The Prey of Gods by Nicky Drayden. I don’t believe there is a release date yet, and the description on Goodreads is pretty vague, but even that makes me excited to read this. Drayden has several books listed on Goodreads, but I believe they are all self-published.

Barbary Station by R.E. Stearns. This book doesn’t come out until December 2017 (!) but that’s OK. I can wait:-)

Let me know if you’ve added any of these books to your TBR!

  1. The cover of Spaceman of Bohemia (that’s a coffee right?) was nothing like the goodreads listing AT ALL! It’s an incredibly original plot, I thought! Great picks!

I agree, that cover was designed to appeal to a more literary readership, I think, but I’m also wondering about that cup of coffee, lol!

Debuts can be tricky when it comes to finding good ones, but you never know what you will find, so I do like to go in blind sometimes, and sometimes I’m pleasantly surprised:-)

Yeah, I was trying to find lists on Goodreads but they weren’t very helpful. Luckily there are a lot of bloggers who found even more debuts than I did so my TBR is increasing by leaps and bounds today!

  2. What a great list! I’m also looking forward to Empress of a Thousand Skies, I just wished the cover was better.

I’ve seen many people giving positive reviews to The Bear and the Nightingale so I’m definitely interested.

The Prey of Gods (which I believe is set to release mid June) and Barbary Station are two of my most anticipated debuts this year. Also, doesn’t hurt that the covers are so badass!

I LOVE The Prey of Gods cover! I’m so curious because the story description is so vague, but I think the cover does a great job of portraying what’s to come:-)

  3. Barbary Station sounds like a very good story, indeed… This is the first time I’ve heard about it, but I will mark down the publication date (far away as it is…) because I don’t want to miss it.
    Thanks for sharing! 🙂

I’m surprised Barbary Station even has a cover yet! I know there will be plenty to read between now and then:-)

  4. Song of the Current looks (and sounds) amazing, and Barbary station looks very interesting. Alchemy of Masques and Mirrors definitely looks good too, and yes that cover!

Me too! I have been reading so much great horror lately, so I hope The Wood continues that trend:-)

I think publishers make a bigger deal about debut YA authors, for some reason. But I’m happy, I actually discovered quite a few books that are new to me as I hopped around blogs today!

  5. I loved the Bear and the Nightingale. Gilded Cage I had slightly mixed feelings for although I’m definitely the odd one out in that respect because it’s receiving some great reviews. I love the look of The Wood.
