Over-Booked [61] – A Book Haul Post

Welcome to Over-Booked, where I share my most recent book acquisitions with you! I’m linking up with Stacking the Shelves at Tynga’s Reviews and The Sunday Post at the Caffeinated Book Reviewer.

So, December is kicking my ass, you guys. I’ve pretty much put reading and blogging on the back burner, as I scramble to do last-minute Christmas shopping, get my house ready for my family’s visit, finish up college applications for my son, and volunteer for my daughter’s holiday choir program (which is thankfully over!). Hopefully I’ll have more posts up this week, starting with my latest book haul! Despite my sincere desire to curb requests, especially on NetGalley, I’ve managed to acquire some new review books:

Physical books for review:

The Nature of a Pirate by A.M. Dellamonica. This is the third book in the series, and I’m sad that I haven’t been keeping up with it. I believe I have all the books, so really there’s no excuse, other than time. Thank you Tor!

Level Grind by Annie Bellet. I won this from the Qwillery, and I was excited when it finally showed up! Thanks to Saga Press.

Six Wakes by Mur Lafferty. Huge thanks to Orbit, I’m so excited to read this. This will be on my plate for January!

Black City Demon by Richard A. Knaak. This sequel to Black City Saint showed up unexpectedly, but that’s fine with me. Now I have a good reason to go back and catch up. Thank you Pyr!

The Butcher’s Hook by Janet Ellis. Thank you to the very generous Pegasus Books for this finished copy:-) They also sent me an ARC a while back, and I hope to read this sometime next month.

Digital books for review:

Spoonbenders by Daryl Gregory. You cannot possibly understand how excited I am for this book. It doesn’t come out until June, but I doubt I’ll be able to wait that long to read it. If you haven’t read Daryl Gregory before, you really should. Every book he writes is different from the last, and just as consistently well written. I highly recommend Afterparty and We Are All Completely Fine. Huge thanks to Knopf for the review copy!

Fata Morgana by Steven R. Boyett and Ken Mitchroney. After Spoonbenders, this is my second most anticipated release of this bunch. I used to know Steve Boyett, back when I took an amazing writing class from him, and we later became friends and hung out. I feel bad that I’ve lost touch with him. He’s an extremely talented writer who deserves way more attention. I’m thrilled he’s got a new book coming out, which he’s written with his friend Ken Mitchroney. I know this is going to be epic. It’s up on NetGalley, so if you want to give something new a try, head over there and request it. Big thanks to Blackstone Publishing for the review copy!

Miranda and Caliban by Jacqueline Carey. Yep, I’m jumping on the Carey bandwagon, finally! I’m very excited for this retelling of The Tempest. Thanks Tor!

Waking Gods (Themis Files #2) by Sylvain Neuvel. I know Sleeping Giants didn’t work for everyone, but I really enjoyed it. I’m happy to have been approved for the sequel. Thanks to Del Rey!

Shadow Run by AdriAnne Strickland. As you might know, it’s very hard for me to resist anything that’s compared to Firefly. And so I didn’t:-) Thank you Delacorte Press:-D

The House of Binding Thorns by Aliette de Bodard. I’m cheating a bit here, because I haven’t read The House of Shattered Wings yet. But I fully intend to catch up before April. Thank you Ace:-D

And that’s my book haul! Let me know if you’re planning to read any of these books:-)

I’m glad you got your reading groove, it’s hard for me to even concentrate on reading when I have so much to get done for the holidays.

  1. I’ve never read Jacqueline Carey either (though I still have Kushiel’s Dart in my TBR pile), but I like the sounds of Miranda & Caliban. So I’ll be looking forward to your thoughts on that one.

As for me, the only new book I’ve gotten recently is Stories of Your Life & Others, a sci-fi short story collecton by Ted Chiang. It’s actually been retitled as Arrival, since “Story of Your Life” is the basis for the movie “Arrival.” (I had no idea until I saw the book at Target, and had enjoyed the movie so I figured, “Why not?”)

    • Tammy

Oh really? I had no idea either than Arrival was based on that book. Now I want to see the movie AND read the book! Thanks for the tip, Sara:-)

    • Tammy

I agree, thanks for the reminder, Stormi! Spending time with family is way more important than blogging:-)

  2. This will be my first Carey book as well. I haven’t read The House of Shattered Wings either but really want to. You got a lot of great books and there must be something in the air because December is kicking my ass too. I spent almost all day decorating the house and making chocolate dipped pretzel rods. Now to find time for making cookies and wrapping!

I don’t even have time this year to make cookies! It’s so sad. And I’m having my parents over for Christmas and instead of cooking, I’ve bought all the meat precooked (thank you Costco!) and I’m just going to make a couple of side dishes. Lazy!!

I would like to read Black City Demon at some point, really enjoyed the first book. And I’ve enjoyed everything I’ve read by Aliette de Bodard, so I’d love to read both books in that series. Lots of other interesting titles in the list. Good luck with everything else, we’re in the home stretch now! 🙂

I’m glad you enjoyed Black City Saint. I didn’t see a lot of reviews of that book which is one reason it kind of fell through the cracks.

  4. I’ve been trying to be good and holding off on requesting Waking Gods (and the temptation is even worse because I have Read Now from the publisher) but your excitement is contagious. I was one of those reviewers who had mixed feelings for the first book, but I really do want to find out how the story continues!!! Ugh, I’ll probably cave soon once I polish off a couple more netgalley books 😛

And ooh, thanks for the heads up on Shadow Run! But gah, more temptation! 😛

It seems NetGalley has suddenly exploded with books I want to read, and it’s so hard to say “no.” At least you know you can push that button at any time for Waking Gods, so you have a few months:-)

    • Tammy

I’ve read so many good things about the Dellamonica series, I really do need to try to fit those in. Thanks for visiting!

    • Tammy

LOL, I’m glad I’m not the only one who requested book two in a series when I haven’t read book one! I am more determined than ever to catch up!

  5. I wouldn’t have time to blog or anything if I was requesting books from places like Netgalley! I’ve got so much reading to do just to catch up on the books I already own! Next year I’ll take back control…I hope! Enjoy your new books!

    • Tammy

I admire the fact that you are actually reading the books you own! I feel like as a review blogger I have to stay current and only review new books, but I’d love to take time out and read some older ones. Maybe next year!

  6. I recognize none of these writers or titles. Do I live under a rock? I like the cover of Waking Gods, though. “Sleeping Giants” and “Waking Gods” sounds very poetic, but the description on goodreads reads like commercial fiction. How would you describe his writing? Thanks!

  7. Every year I say I’m going to schedule posts ahead so I have time for other things, and this year it’s finally happened. LOL It feel weird to not be scrambling to get posts up and I find myself checking again to make sure I didn’t miss any.
I can see why you couldn’t resist. What a great haul!

Enjoy snuggling in with your new reads and Happy Holidays!

  8. Wow with all that going on I think you’re doing fine! The Nature of a Pirate and Six Wakes are both on my list to maybe read, they both look great. Fata Morgana I’ll definitely check out as it’s new to me, and Waking Gods I’m curious about even though I didn’t love the first one. I’m curious what happens…

  9. So many good-lookin’ books! 😀 I’m also planning to read Fata Morgana in the next few weeks. It’s so cool that you know the author! And it must have been a happy surprise to see him up on Netgalley. Where did you take his writing class?

  10. Some lovely looking books on here. I’m excited to give the Carey book a go and I will definitely ready the Neuvel book.
    Lynn 😀
