What’s On My Plate – November 2016

On My Plate

Happy November, everyone! Hard to believe the end of the year is just around the corner…I hope you all have the chance to celebrate Thanksgiving with your families later in the month, for those of you who celebrate it. Meanwhile, I have a busy blogging month ahead Not only do I have some November releases that I want to read and review, but I’m participating in Sci-Fi Month as well, which means there are even more books I want to read! Here’s what’s on tap for November:

sci-fi-month

Come back tomorrow, because I’ll have my Sci-Fi Month kick-off post where I’ll tell you what’s in the works. I have plenty of science fiction books that I’m going to try to get to, Sci-Fi top ten lists, giveaways, author interviews and more!

Books for review:

Among the non-SF books I’m going to try to read this month: Congress of Secrets by Stephanie Burgis. Burgis writes historical fantasies, and I really enjoyed her last one, Masks & Shadows.

The Face-Faker’s Game by Chandler J. Birch. I’ve seen some good reviews on this already, so I’m anxious to check it out for myself.

Slipping by Lauren Beukes. This is a collection of short stories, although the titles has the word “essays” in it, so I’m not sure what to expect. In any case, I love Beukes so I’m willing to try it!

The Secret Life of Souls by Jack Ketchum and Lucky McKee. I recently received a surprise review copy of this book, and because it’s being compared to The Story of Edgar Sawtelle, I’m very curious to read it.

The Hidden People by Alison Littlewood. This came out in October, but I’m going to try to catch up because it sounds really good.

The Starlit Wood edited by Dominik Parisien and Navah Wolfe. I just didn’t get to this last month, so I’m going to try again.

Giveaways:

On the 15th I’ll kick off my monthly Book Review Giveaway, where you can win your choice of one of the books I reviewed in October. And wow, October was an EXCELLENT month for books! I’ll also have a couple of giveaways (although I haven’t worked out the details yet) in connection to Sci-Fi Month, but I’ll talk more about those tomorrow.

Let me know what you’re up to this month! Are you participating in Sci-Fi Month too?

Thanks Stormi, I always have great ambitions at the beginning of the month, but then I get really busy so my plans don’t always work out. Oh well!

I got a finished copy as well of The Secret Life of Souls, and I know I’ve said this over and over, but the Stephen King blurb and the comparison to The Story of Edgar Sawtelle make this one a MUST READ for me. Have you read Edgar Sawtelle? I could totally see you loving that book.

  1. Definitely interested in reading your thoughts on Congress of Secrets. I liked Stephanie Burgis’s other book, so I’m curious to see what reviewers think of her new one.

As for my own reading, I started Jen Williams’ The Copper Promise last night and am hoping to get to Ryan Graudin’s Blood For Blood and Victoria Schwab’s This Savage Song this month. No sci-fi, but these three should finish up the last of my “brand new” reads for 2016.

I was actually going to say something about all my blue covers, lol. I think subconsciously I tend to favor that color and so many of the books I read have blue covers. Weird!

  2. Yeah, my next books include The Hidden People, Facefaker’s game (which I’m really curious about given to the comparisons on the blurb) and Congress of Secrets.
What sci fi books have you got lined up? I need some recommendations of really good books that make me want to dive right in! Any suggestions always gratefully received.

I have way more SF books lined up than I can read, but I hope to get to Faller, Gemina, Time Siege and a few more. We’ll see how that goes, lol.

I always think I’m going to love reading short stories, but they don’t always work for me. We’ll see what happens with the Beukes collection:-)

I just read one of the stories in The Starlit Wood last night, and let’s just say I may have to ditch my current novel and read the rest of this book!
