Over-Booked [58] – A Book Haul Post

Welcome to Over-Booked, where I get to share my recent book acquisitions! I’m linking up with Stacking the Shelves at Tynga’s Reviews and The Sunday Post at the Caffeinated Book Reviewer.

I just finished up a couple of exhausting weeks during the lead up to my daughter’s show choir production, Burroughs on Broadway, so I’m definitely ready for a little downtime! This year her choir did a mini version of Wicked, and if you have a half hour to kill, take a look! These kids are amazing.

And yes, I have some new books to share as well:-) Lots of surprises in the mail. Somehow I got on a list for new publisher, Pegasus Books, and they surprised me with lots of goodies, some of which I will definitely be reading and reviewing. Here are my latest and greatest:

Physical books:

ob-10-15

I received four intriguing books this week from Pegasus Books, and a huge thanks to this new-to-me publisher! Black Feathers: Dark Avian Tales edited by Ellen Datlow sounds so unique: short horror stories that revolve around birds! How cool is that? The Secret Life of Souls by Jack Ketchum and Lucky McKee sounds like my kind of book, I mean look at the dog on the cover! The clincher is the blurb from Stephen King on the front, comparing this to The Story of Edgar Sawtelle, one of my ALL TIME favorite books. I also received two thriller/mystery stories that look really good, Hold a Scorpion by Melodie Johnson Howe and The Butcher’s Hook by Janet Ellis.

Thanks to Pyr for a finished copy of The Apothecary’s Curse by Barbara Barnett! I plan to read this in the next month or so.

And a lovely surprise from Sterling, A Field Guide to Fantastical Beasts by Olento Salaperäinen. It’s a gorgeously illustrated, full color book written in a “field guide” style with entries for just about every beastie under the sun. Big thanks to Sterling!

ob-10-15-2

A couple of surprises from Tor Books arrived, Treachery’s Tools by L.E. Modesitt, Jr., which is book #10 in a series (!!), and The Rains by Gregg Hurwitz, a YA apocalyptic story (from the looks of it). I’m quite looking forward to this one. Big thanks to Tor Books!

I received two copies of The Glass Republic by Tom Pollock, the second book in a series that I need to catch up with. I’ve heard good things about this series so I hope to find time to start it soon. (And if anyone wants my second copy just let me know!) Thank you Jo Fletcher Books:-)

I pre-ordered the special Barnes & Noble signed edition of The Rise of Io by Wesley Chu, which I’m nearly finished with (look for a review this week!). I’m so happy to have a nice hardcover of this book, which I’m loving!

And I actually won a couple of things this week, and one of them already arrived. I got a copy of Margaret Atwood’s latest Hag-Seed from Read It Forward, which is part of the Hogarth Shakespeare series. This is Atwood’s take on The Tempest, and it sounds pretty good! My other win I’ll tell you about when I receive it:-)

Digital Books:

A trio of new Tor.com novellas this time around, and the most exciting for me is Home by Nnedi Okorafor, the sequel to Binti. Plus, that cover! Also Passing Strange by Ellen Klages and Cold Counsel by Chris Sharp, which look completely different but so good! Thank you Tor.com!

I couldn’t resist downloading Hunted by Meagan Spooner, a Beauty and the Beast retelling.

And finally, I’m SUPER excited to be offered a review copy of Oliver Langmead’s upcoming book, Metronome. I absolutely loved Dark Star, which I reviewed a couple of years ago. And look at the gorgeous cover! Big thanks to Unsung Stories.

In case you missed it, I just started my Book Review Giveaway here. Check it out, you can win one of the books I reviewed in September!

And that’s a wrap! Let me know if you’re planning to read any of these:-D

Thanks Jeann! I haven’t read a book by Meagan Spooner in a while so I’m very excited about Hunted:-)

I’m not familiar with Chris Sharpe either, but many of the Tor.com novellas are new to me authors, and they are a great way to try something new with fairly short reads.

  1. Those kids on stage are not only amazing, they are showing the same skills and confidence of professionals. Thank you so much for sharing the video! 🙂

As for the books, I find “Metronome” one of the most compelling, and will keep an eye out for it – in this case, I guess that judging a book by its cover would be quite all right!

Thanks Maddalena, they are very professional for a public high school choir. I don’t want to brag but our choir program is pretty well known throughout the country in show choir circles. And I hope you do get to read Metronome, his last book was actually written in verse, but I adored it.

  2. I landed a surprise copy of Treachery’s Tools from Tor as well, along side a copy of Unhonored by Tracy and Laura Hickman, and The Librarians and The Lost Lamp by Greg Cox (which I requested). I like Modesitt’s stuff, but I have some serious catching up to do on that series.

    • Tammy

Yeah, I was wondering if Treachery’s Tools could be read as a stand alone. Seems nearly impossible to catch up at this point!

  3. Wish I could get on some of those publishers list, I rarely get a print book…lol. But I get plenty of ebooks so can’t really complain…lol. 🙂

That is a cool video, they did a great job! 🙂

Home is on my to read list (though I still have to read Binti first). I was lucky enough to win a copy of Treachery’s Tools from Tor, so I’m looking forward to that one. I’d love to hear what you think of A Field Guide to Fantastical Beasts, it looks interesting. And I spend some of my spare time photographing birds, so Black Feathers sounds like something right up my alley!

    • Tammy

I’m a bird lover, I used to have birds, so I’m very curious to check out Black Feathers. Not sure I’ll get to Treachery’s Tools, but I hope you love it!

  5. Lots of good looking books and I’m dying to get a copy of Black Feathers. I plan on reading the Jack Ketchum book early in November. Your daughter’s production looks super cool. I really enjoyed Wicked when I read it years ago. I already have Hunterdon my wish list.

Ellen Datlow always puts out good anthologies so I’m looking forward to Black Feathers, especially since it’s about birds!

  6. I think you’ve actually worked with Pegasus before, they were the US publisher Son of the Morning – pretty sure that’s how I got on their list too 🙂 I received The Secret Life of Souls this week and at first glance I thought it was a women’s fiction/contemporary feel-good book about dogs. The actual description couldn’t be farther from my first impression, lol!

Oh yeah, you’re right. I thought they sounded familiar:-) I agree, when I first saw The Secret Life of Souls I wasn’t sure about it, but I’ve read Jack Ketchum before and some of his stuff is pretty dark, so that sealed the deal for me!

  7. It’s always nice when the kids put on a show like that.

Passing strange looks good, what a cover, and The Field Guide looks nice too (I always like books like that). Give me lots of strange creatures! 🙂 The secret Life of Souls and The Apothecary’s Curse look interesting too.

I just love the cover of Passing Strange as well, but then for some reason I’m always drawn to blue covers…

  8. OMG Tammy. Have you been hiding all the books from us!? Goodness, that’s a lot! Which is awesome. =) I got some of those Harper books too, Hunted included! I wanted them to upload a few more, but alas. Hopefully later in the year. I hope you enjoy all of your new books!

Thanks for visiting my blog! Have a wonderful weekend, Tammy. =)

Ha ha, well, this is about three weeks worth of books, I’ve been stacking them up, waiting for a free weekend to pull a post together:-) Thanks for stopping by, Alyssa!

    • Tammy

I’m very excited to read short horror stories about birds. I think that’s going to be a first for me!

  9. Great book haul. You’ve got such a lot of excellent reading to look forward to and I look forward to reading your thoughts.
Great show by the way and thanks for sharing.
    Lynn 😀
