Over-Book [57] – A Book Haul Post

Welcome to Over-Booked, where I get to share my recent book acquisitions! I’m linking up with Stacking the Shelves at Tynga’s Reviews and The Sunday Post at the Caffeinated Book Reviewer.

It’s hard to believe there is just a little over three months left in 2016, and as the year winds down, so do the number of review books I receive. I’m hoping to spend the entire month of December catching up on books I wasn’t able to get to, so I’ve definitely been taking it easy with requests. But still, a few surprises showed up, and I got a couple of interesting digital books as well. Here’s what I’ve added to my shelves in the past two weeks:

Physical books:

ob-9-24

Despite my extreme fear of ants, I broke down and bought a copy of Chuck Wendig’s latest, Invasive, because it’s Chuck, and I’ve also been reading some very good reviews of this book.

The Dreaming Hunt by Cindy Dees and Bill Flippin was a surprise from Tor. It’s the second in a series I haven’t started yet, so I’m not sure I’ll be able to fit this in.

The Hidden People by Alison Littlewood. I was so excited to receive this surprise from Jo Fletcher Books, because I had just seen it on someone else’s blog and had added it to my Goodreads TBR. Sounds like a perfect October read:-)

Cloudbound by Fran Wilde. Another surprise from Tor, I really enjoyed the first book in the series, Updraft, and I’m curious to see when Fran takes her story.

Big thanks to Tor Books and Jo Fletcher Books!

Digital books:

First up, a couple of books from the wonderful Apex Book Company:

Rosewater by Tade Thompson sounds fantastic! An alien invasion story, I’m really looking forward to this. Because this releases in November, Rosewater will be one of my reviews for Sci-Fi Month! (If you don’t know what Sci-Fi Month is, click on that link!)

Kentucky Kaiju by Justin Stewart, Tressina Bowling and Shawn Pryor. This book sounds crazy! It’s basically a guide to kaiju (monsters) from Kentucky. It’s heavily illustrated by Stewart and Bowling and written by Pryor. I have a digital copy from the publisher but I’m thinking the physical copy might be the way to go with this book. I’ll be reviewing it next month close to Halloween, and Apex has asked me to host one of the authors, so stayed tuned for some fun with monsters in October!

A new trio of novellas from Tor.com: Dusk or Dark or Dawn or Day by Seanan McGuire. I’m so excited to see another novella from McGuire. This sounds like a cool ghost story!

Winter Tide by Ruthanna Emrys. Looks like another Lovecraft tale! On closer inspection, this is actually a full length novel.

The Fortress at the End of Time by Joe M. McDermott. Hey another novel-length, um, novel. What’s going on, Tor.com?

That’s it for me this time, are you planning on reading any of these books?

  1. Look at the all good books that I want to read but don’t have the time for! :C This is the worst.

I got an email about that Kaiju book, and Dusk or Dark or Dawn or Day and Winter Tide look good!

I’m putting in a request for you to review those for me 😛

  2. I’m going to have to look into The Winter People…. might be something I’m interested in. The Kentucky book looks good as well and since I attended college right on the KY and WV border, it would be fun. We used to go there from time to time. Great books this time around and as usual, my TBR grows :). I actually love when you do hauls because I always find new stuff!

  3. Do the ants where you are go dormant around this time of the season? For the sake of your sanity, I hope so, if you’re planning to start Invasive soon 😉

And I was really excited to receive The Hidden People as well. I can’t believe I never heard of this book, but I agree, my first thought was also “hellooo, perfect October/Halloween read”!

It never gets cold enough in California for the ants to go dormant, unfortunately. But we were able to get rid of our ants recently, and it’s the first time in 15 years we’ve had a problem, so I hope they are gone for good:-D
