What’s On My Plate – September 2016

On My Plate

Well, it’s September, and summer is officially over, although it still feels like summer where I live. The kids are back in school and life outside of this blog is about to get really busy. But the next couple of months are just bursting with bookish goodness, and even though I’ve over-extended myself with review books, I’m very excited to read my September and October books. But let’s take it one month at a time, shall we??

Before I get to the books, I have finally started watching this:

Stranger Things poster

If you aren’t watching Stranger Things on Netflix, you’re really missing out. Amazing acting, music, story and production, it will remind you of all kinds of movies, like The X-Files and E.T. and The Goonies, and it will also scare the crap out of you! This is one reason I haven’t been able to read as much lately:-D And no spoilers please! I still have three episodes to go:-D

And now the books for September! My top two most anticipated books of the month are:

The Rise of Io by Wesley Chu. Technically this book comes out in October, but I need to get a jump on my October review books because…OUT OF CONTROL! And anyway, I’m very excited to revisit Chu’s fantastic world.

Like a River Glorious by Rae Carson. I’ve been anticipating book two in Carson’s series ever since I closed the last page on Walk on Earth a Stranger.

And more awesome September books:

The Graces by Laure Eve. Lots of mixed reviews for this YA start of a new series about witches.

The Empty Ones by Robert Brockway. I loved book one in this series, a violent horror story steeped in punk rock!

Rencor: Life in Gruge City by Matt Wallace. I’ve never heard of this publisher before, but I do love Matt Wallace, which is why I agreed to read this. A novella that combines Mexican wrestling with mummies!

Stay Crazy by Erica L. Satifka. This sounds pretty funny, and I’m loving the graphic novel-inspired cover.

Three Dark Crowns by Kendare Blake. Another start to a new YA series, this sounds very dark! I can’t wait to jump in.

Children of the Different by S.C. Flynn. Aussie writer and blogger Flynn is self-publishing his first book, and I’m looking forward to checking it out! I’m also going to be on his blog tour (see below).

The Family Plot by Cherie Priest. This has been getting excellent reviews, and I’m glad I got a last-minute approval for this book on NetGalley.

The Warren by Brian Evenson and Cold-Forged Flame by Marie Brennan, two Tor.com novellas that I hope to get to this month.

Author Interviews & Giveaways:

Yesterday I posted my interview with Robert Brockway to talk about his new release The Empty Ones, and I’m also running a giveaway of the book until the 15th, so check it out here! I’ll also be interviewing S.C. Flynn at the end of the month about his first novel, Children of the Different.

And a last-minute giveaway just popped up…Sterling Publishing is offering up a copy of the Edgar Allan Poe Coloring Book, which got lots of positive reactions when I featured it last weekend on my Over-Booked post. Come back on the 6th to enter!

And watch out for my Book Review Giveaway, which returns this month on September 15th!

That’s my crazy month, what does yours look like?

  1. Crap – I forgot about The Graces. It will never make the list now and may get pushed back until October. I LOVE Stranger Things and I think my husband and I watched it all in 2 days. I’m so excited to hear that it was just renewed for Season 2 this week. I am really interested in that Matt Wallace book – it sounds just quirky enough to work. Plus, I’m sure since he was a lucha wrestler at one time that will add lots to the book. Good luck with all your reading!

  3. Loved Stranger Things – can’t even say how much without an essay!
Family Plot – I’m about 60% through and it’s bloody awesome and well creepy! Don’t read it at night on your own is my advice.
