What’s On My Plate – August 2016

On My Plate

I swear I just wrote my July What’s On My Plate, could the month really have gone that quickly?? Oh well, here we are in August already. July was not the best reading month for me, as I had all kinds of distractions going on. But hopefully August will be better. School starts in two weeks and I’m seriously mourning the end of summer! My son will be a SENIOR which means college is right around the corner. I am NOT ready for that!

Because I barely made a dent in my July TBR, there will be some carry-over this month. I won’t show you those books below, but I do have quite a few that I will be reading in August. Meanwhile, here are the August review titles I’ll be tackling:

My two most anticipated books of the month: The Obelisk Gate by N.K. Jemisin and Nevernight by Jay Kristoff. I’m reading Nevernight right now and I LOVE IT.

Breath of Earth by Beth Cato. I’m so excited to dive into this book, especially since I just got a physical copy at Comic Con.

I Am Providence by Nick Mamatas. This will be the second of Mamatas’ books I’ve read. I enjoyed The Last Weekend but didn’t love it, so I’m hoping this might work a little better for me.

Behind the Throne by K.B. Wagers. I’m looking forward to this “Star Wars-style science fiction adventure” by debut author Wagers. I’ve seen some good reviews for this!

Good Morning, Midnight by Lily Brooks-Dalton. I love that this has a Station Eleven vibe to it. We’ll see how it compares…

Children of Icarus by Caighlan Smith. This was unsolicited from Switch Press, but I do love this publisher so I’m going to give this a try.

Summerlong by Peter S. Beagle. A long-awaited book from the author of The Last Unicorn. I’m giving this a shot, even though I’m not a huge fan of The Last Unicorn. Don’t hate me! I know that is a much-loved book, but I just couldn’t get into it.

Song of the Deep by Brian Hastings. I think I was supposed to read this last month, but I will read it in August for sure. There is a video game of the same name, and this is the companion novel.

The Language of Dying by Sarah Pinborough. A short novella, this will be my first book from this author.

Curioddity by Paul Jenkins. This sounds like fun, and the publisher describes it as “uncanny.”

Giveaways/Author visits:

So I’m skipping my Book Review Giveaway this month—I know! Sorry guys, I just didn’t read enough books in July. So I’ll be combining my July and August reads and I’ll probably have two winners next month.

HOWEVER, I am putting together a special Comic Con prize pack with lots of books, bags, buttons and some other goodies, so stay tuned for that sometime this month.

No firm author interviews yet, but you never know. Things do pop up unexpectedly!

So that’s my month. I’m focusing on reading and reviewing. Let’s see if I can get back in the groove:-) What are your reading plans this month?

  1. The Obelisk Gate!!!!! That’s my most anticipated read of 2016, too, so I’m really excited that it’s coming out soon. 😀

Oh my goodness, senior year of high school… I only know it from the student perspective, and that was a stressful time until I knew which college I was going to attend. Best of luck to you and your son – just don’t forget to take deep breaths and to pace yourself. 😉

Thanks Sara, I’ve got two stressful years ahead of me, since my daughter is one year behind my son. But I am trying to enjoy each moment of the process:-)

I’ve seen lots of positive reviews for The Language of Dying, I hope to read it very soon:-)

It’s nice to have a catch-up month, I’m hoping to squeeze in some of my July books too!

I think The Obelisk Gate will be coming up very soon on my pile, I’m so excited for it:-)

Happy August to you too, Lucy! I think Comic Con always kills my plans for reading and blogging, and I’m not sure why. But I wouldn’t give it up for anything:-)

I still managed to line up lots of August reads for some reason, so maybe September will be my catch-up month, lol.

Yep, it’s another month with a bunch of awesome looking books! I just need more time to read…

  2. Yep, I think we’re all catching up. I don’t know where the time goes.
And, I’ve just started Nevernight! All I can say is wow – what a start. No messing about and so far definitely so good. So let’s see.

Your two top picks would be mine, as well. I have N. K. Jemisin’s first series still waiting to be read, need to get around to that. And Nevernight sounds promising. Looking forward to your take on these.
