What’s On My Plate – July 2016

On My Plate

It’s that time again, the beginning of a new month! July is crazy over-flowing with new releases in SFF, and as usual I’ve requested way too many, LOL! So I’m dividing this post up into two sections: books that are must-reads, and then books that I’ll read if I have time.

But first, the most important thing that’s happening this month:

badge

Yep, having purchased my tickets back in November 2015 (!!) it’s almost time for San Diego Comic Con! This year SDCC is going high-tech with RFID cards, so they are really getting tough with security. I just got my badges in the mail, also a new thing, and they are pretty darn cool:-) Stay tuned in the next couple of weeks for a post about what I’m looking forward to!

Now on to the books:

Must-reads for July:

Paper and Fire by Rachel Caine. Book two in The Great Library series, I gave Ink and Bone a five-star rating. I’m so curious to see how this stacks up.

The Devourers by Indra Das. I’ve heard great things about this fairy tale set in India.

The Kraken Sea by E. Catherine Tobler. This short novella came out in June, so I’m a little behind, but I love this cover and it sounds really good.

Red Right Hand by Levi Black. A Lovecraft-inspired story, I’m very excited to dive into this book.

Before She Wakes: Forbidden Fairy Tales by Sharon Lynn Fisher. I’m a big fan of Sharon’s and I was very happy to be offered a review copy of her collection of erotic/fantasy stories.

The Heavenly Table by Donald Ray Pollock. This will be my first Pollock book, even though I bought his last book The Devil All the Time. The publisher’s descriptions of “dark, gritty and weirdly funny” sound like a recipe for the perfect Tammy book:-)

Time Siege by Wesley Chu. Another second book in a series, I really enjoyed Time Salvager, and I’m curious to see where Chu takes his story next.

Bite by K.S. Merbeth. I just got a copy of this in the mail, and I’m pretty darn excited. Cannibals!

If I have time:

The Wolf Road by Beth Lewis. I hope I find time to get to this, it’s a literary thriller and it has great reviews already on Goodreads.

The Dragon Round by Stephen S. Power. I’ve had an eARC of this for months, and I’ve been drooling over the drool-worthy cover just as long.

The Invisible Library by Genevieve Cogman. I love books about books (well, who doesn’t??), so I hope I can fit this in.

The Copper Promise by Jen Williams. I’m excited that Angry Robot is publishing this in the U.S., where previously there was only a UK edition available.

Dark Matter by Blake Crouch. A man wakes up to a world he doesn’t recognize. A familiar scenario, but this one sounds really good.

It Happened One Doomsday by Lawrence MacNaughton. This seems to have a lot going for it: urban fantasy, romance, magic, apocalypse, and much more.

Author Interviews/Giveaways

Dates haven’t been set yet for these interviews, so follow the blog if you don’t want to miss anything:-)

Mega-bestselling author F. Paul Wilson visits the blog this month, to promote his new book Panacea! I’m a fan of his from way back, and I’m thrilled to be able to ask him some questions.

Red Queen is the second book in Christina Henry’s The Chronicles of Alice. I loved the first book, Alice, and I’m excited to have Henry visit the blog! Plus, I’ll be giving away a copy of Alice, so check back!

My book review giveaway returns on the 15th! After June’s unprecedented FIVE giveaways, I’m taking it easy this month with just two:-)

And that’s my blogging July! (Of course, other things may pop up unexpectedly…)Let me know if we share any books in common this month:-)

July is awesome for SFF books, right? How to squeeze them all in is going to be a challenge:-)

  1. How cool you are going to ComicCon. Have fun! I have Right Hand Red, Paper and Fire and It Happened One Doomsday on my TBR this month as well (as well as many others I hope to read but probably won’t). I’m really anxious to see what you think of Bite as I think it looks awesome and while it has little to do with vampires (I think), I am looking for something to fill the void of The Suicide Motor Club. Good luck with all you reads this month!

Thanks Barb, yes it’s going to be tough to find something that lives up the The Suicide Motor Club:-)

I definitely want to get to Dark Matter if I can. I haven’t watched Wayward Pines, but it sounds like you enjoyed Dark Matter??

      • Matt

I watched the first episode of Wayward Pines and had a bad feeling, so I switched to the books. They were fun, but not quite what I expected. I thought Dark Matter was better once it got going; the first quarter of the book is slow.

  2. Tammy V.

I have The Great Library Series on my TBR. I’ve been looking at the Chu series and like the cover but haven’t truly committed. Bite and Heavenly Table are 2 I will look into.

I loved the first book in the Great Library series, so we’ll see how book two goes. Hope to start it soon!

  3. Paper & Fire! I pre-ordered that one a while ago, so I’m hoping to get to it sometime in July. So I’m looking forward to reading your thoughts on it, too.

Very, VERY jealous about Comic Con, btw. I hope you have an awesome time!!

I feel very lucky to get SDCC tickets, each year it’s a very stressful time to go through the ticket buying process, and then after that it’s even more stressful to try to get a hotel! But I guess the stress is finally going to pay off, lol.

  4. Your so lucky to go to a Comic Con, I have always wanted to do that. 🙂 Maybe some day. You also have a lot of great books coming up to read this month! 🙂

    • Tammy

I should do a post on my tips for getting SDCC tickets, lol! There is definite strategy involved;-)

  5. Looking forward to the Chu book very much.
I must say I love the look and sound of Devourers! I had *wants* for that one.
    Happy reading.
    Lynn 😀

The Devourers looks so good, right? And Time Siege! Gah, SO MANY BOOKS THIS MONTH!!

  6. So glad to see you mention my debut It Happened One Doomsday! When I was writing it, I wanted to create an utterly unique magic system. By chance, I chatted with Dan Aykroyd from Ghostbusters, who’s a big believer in the metaphysical properties of crystals. Some people believe that a pure quartz crystal can cleanse your soul, amethyst can protect you from psychic attack, halite (rock salt) dissolves negative energy, etc. So I amped up these properties up to a super-power level for the book. It was a ton of fun to write. Let me know if you’d like to do a Q&A sometime! 🙂

    • Tammy

Thanks for stopping by, Lawrence! Your book just moved from the “if I have time” to the “must read” pile:-) A Q&A sounds like fun!

    • Tammy

Ha ha why do publishers do that?? For some reason that first Tuesday of the month always seems to be the most popular for new releases.

  7. OMG I totally forgot that it’s almost time for SDCC! You’re going to have such an epic (if exhausting) time! Wow, I didn’t realize that The Devourers is set in India, that makes me want to read it even more! I’m hoping to squeeze The Invisible Library into my schedule too.

SDCC is totally exhausting, and it’s the one thing I do where I don’t mind putting up with lines and crowds (which are both really hard for me!). But I love the energy of the fans who go, it’s so…energizing!
