Over-Booked [47] – A Book Haul Post

Welcome to Over-Booked, where I’m linking up with Stacking the Shelves at Tynga’s Reviews and The Sunday Post at the Caffeinated Book Reviewer. I’m happy to share my most recent book acquisitions! Hopefully you’ll find something here that interests you:-)

Oh so many cool books to share this week! Some requests came in, and I got some surprises as well.

Physical books for review:

over booked

I Am Providence by Nick Mamatas. I requested this from Night Shade Books a few months ago, and it finally showed up. I enjoyed The Last Weekend, which was an unconventional zombie story, and I’m looking forward to this story about a horror writer attending an H.P Lovecraft convention (!!) Sounds cool, thanks Night Shade!

Lois Lane: Fallout and Lois Lane: Double Down by Gwenda Bond. Thanks to my new BFF at Switch Press, I was offered the second book in Bond’s YA series about a high-school-aged Lois Lane. When I mentioned I hadn’t read the first book yet, she kindly sent a copy of that along too! Very excited to dip into this series. Thank you Switch Press:-)

Time Siege by Wesley Chu. AAAAAHHHHH! I was so excited when this book showed up! I had a blast with the first book in the series, Time Salvager, and I’m very curious to see what happens next. Big thanks to Tor!

Red Right Hand by Levi Black. I’ve been seeing this book around on various blogs, and I was super excited when Tor offered me a review copy. This dark fantasy sounds great! Thanks Tor:-)

The Soul Standard by Nik Korpon, Caleb J. Ross, Axel Taiari and Richard Thomas. This was a surprise from Dzanc Books, a new publisher for me. I have to say I’m not familiar with these authors, but the concept of this thriller told in four parts by four different authors sounds pretty cool. Big thanks to Dzanc!

Burning by Danielle Rollins. I read The Merciless a couple of years ago, which the author wrote under the pseudonym Danielle Vega, and when Danielle contacted me and asked if I’d like a copy of her latest YA horror novel, I jumped at the chance to read it! Danielle was kind enough to send two signed copies, so I’ll be having a giveaway as soon as I read and review this! Thank you Danielle!

The Edge of Worlds by Martha Wells. I’ve seen other bloggers showing off their copies of Wells’ newest book, the first in a new series, so I was pretty excited to get my own copy. I haven’t read her before, but I know lots of people who love her Raksura series. Thank you to Night Shade Books!

Clinch by Martin Holmén. Pushkin Vertigo is publishing some cool noir thrillers, and this is billed as “ultra gritty Swedish noir.” Not my usual genre, but I do have a thing for Swedish writers, so I hope to read this at some point. Thank you Pushkin!

Digital books for review:

The Devourers by Indra Das. I was so excited to get approved for this! Indian folklore, shapeshifters, and a tale within a tale, I can’t wait to read this. Big thanks to Del Rey.

first communions by Geoffrey Girard.  The always exciting Apex Books does it again, with a short story collection from horror writer Geoffrey Girard. I’m almost finished with this and my review will be up this week. Girard’s stories are so unique, sometimes upsetting, but always entertaining. Thank you Apex!

Psychopomp and Circumstance by Adrean Messmer. The author contacted me about his horror novel, and although I don’t usually take on books from super small publishers, the story grabbed me and so I said Yes. Click on the link and check out the description, plus check out the gorgeous cover. And who can resist a pun like that! Big thanks to Adrean!

Company Town by Madeline Ashby. I swear I chose this as a Waiting on Wednesday pick about two years ago, LOL! I believe this was originally supposed to be published by Angry Robot, so clearly something happened there. Now Tor is the publisher, and I’m just happy I’m going to get to read it! Thank you Tor:-)

Paper and Fire by Rachel Caine. I LOVED Ink and Bone, and I’m really looking forward to this second book in one of my favorite new series! Big thanks to NAL.

Pride’s Spell by Matt Wallace. A new Tor.com novella in my favorite Tor.com series, Sin du Jour, I’ve gushed about this book a lot lately. If you love well written, funny dialogue and ridiculous shenanigans, you’ll enjoy these books as well.

I also received a couple of other Tor.com novellas, which will be releasing in the next few months: Spiderlight by Adrian Tchaikovsky and The Dream-Quest of Vellitt Boe by Kij Johnson. Thank you Tor.com!

OK, time to hit the books! Let me know if you plan on reading any of these:-D

  1. I’ve heard of the Rachel Caine book but the rest are new to me. Some nice covers in your haul this week so I hope the books turn out to be good reads for you!

Thanks, I’ve been pretty lucky lately, most of my reads have been 4 stars and up. Hope the trend continues!

  2. Nice haul. I got my copy of The Edge of Worlds last week, and just got my copy of Spiderlight the other day. I had no idea Tor.com had different publicists than Tor, but now I’m all set. 🙂

I’m glad you’re hooked up with Mordicai (right? for Tor.com). So many good things coming out from them, it’s going to be hard to keep up:-)

The concept for I Am Providence just sounds so cool. Plus tentacles on the cover of a book just makes me happy for some weird reason;-)

  3. And once again my TBR/ wishlist grows. Tor is putting some great stuff out and I don’t know if I can pass up Psychopomp and Circumstance. I also need the Lois Lane books. Hope you live all of these and I am always excited to hear your thoughts.

  4. The Dream-Quest of Vellitt Boe by Kij Johnson? First time hearing about that novella, but I am slight interested int it.

I am expecting to hear raving reviews for Paper and Fire! And congrats on getting an review copy for Time Siege! 🙂

I’m so excited about Paper and Fire! I’ll be reading it earlier than the July release, I hope. I don’t think I can wait:-D

  5. Great haul! There’s quite a few books on here where I need to start the series. I’m waiting on the first book in Matt Wallace’s series to come into the library. I also need to check out Martha Wells’ series.

I’m not a big fan of series, but when I find one I love I do try to keep up. There are just SO many out there:-)
