Over-Booked is where I get to share my recent book acquisitions, both purchases and review books, and I’m linked up with Stacking the Shelves and The Sunday Post.
I’m happy to report I don’t have a huge haul this week, so far I’m keeping control of my TBR pile! There is one exciting book I’m expecting, but it hasn’t arrived yet, so hopefully I’ll get to share it in my next Over-Booked. In the meantime, here are my new arrivals, which are mostly digital this time around:
Physical review books:
Sanctuary Bay by Laura J. Burns & Melinda Metz. This twisty YA thriller takes place at a boarding school, and while it’s not my usual genre, it sounds like lots of fun. Big thanks to St. Martin’s Griffin!
The Silver Witch by Paula Brackston. This came unsolicited from Thomas Dunne Books, and it looks like the paperback release of this book. I haven’t read any of the other books in the series, but I’m thinking I can read this as a standalone. If you’ve read this, I’d love to know if I can read this one first. Thank you Thomas Dunne!
Digital review books:
The Immortals by Jordanna Max Brodsky. I’ve been eyeing this for several months, and I am thrilled to have received an approval on NetGalley. It’s a February release, so I’ll be reading it next month. Big thanks to Orbit!
Devil and the Bluebird by Jennifer Mason-Black. I chose this as a Waiting on Wednesday pick several months ago, and so I couldn’t resist when it popped up on NetGalley! It’s a YA “devil at the crossroads” story with a cool cover:-) Thank you Amulet Books!
The Dark Side by Anthony O’Neill. There’s literally no story description on Goodreads, but over at NetGalley it says “In this dark and gripping sci-fi noir, an exiled police detective arrives at a lunar penal colony just as a psychotic android begins a murderous odyssey across the far side of the moon.” Wow. Big thanks to Simon & Schuster!

The Jewel and Her Lapidary by Fran Wilde. I really enjoyed Updraft, and I’m looking forward to reading more from this author. Plus, this cover is simply STUNNING. The (very short) blurb on Goodreads calls this “An epic fantasy, in miniature.”
Pieces of Hate by Tim Lebbon. Looks like a pirate-themed story! I’ve never read Lebbon before, and this sounds like fun.
The Emperor’s Railroad by Guy Haley. Haley is another new-to-me author, and I do love being able to sample new authors by trying out their shorter works first. This story sounds great: it takes place a thousand years after the apocalypse.

I couldn’t resist The Dark Side either! I know for a while there’s been talk of a movie being made based on it, so of course that got my attention. I’m almost always more interested in the source material 🙂

I received The Devil and the Bluebird and The Dark Side as well. They both sound really interesting. I also think The Immortals sounds great. I have always loved the books Tor publishes and these novellas look good as well.
They are really good, Barb, and it’s nice to have something short to read as a break from long books.
Your.com does an amazing job with their covers. Really curious about Fran Wilde’s novella, will definitely try to read that one. And probably some others. 🙂 great haul!

I’m very curious about Fran Wilde’s story as well. I’m really enjoying the Tor.com novellas, but they are publishing so many, it’s hard to keep up.
I read Dusk by Lebbon. It was not my favorite but pretty good. Pirate stories don’t often call to me, despite Pirate Legos being my favorite toys growing up. But I would try it from an author I like.
Ha ha, pirate legos!! I have been hearing Tim Lebbon’s name around for a while, so I guess it’s time I jumped in and tried him out.

Intriguing titles, though “The Dark Side” is the one I find most compelling: it has many of the elements I find irresistible in a book, starting with the Moon location…

Tim Lebbon does have a couple other books out that I’ve wanted to check out – Coldbrook and The Silence. And this is my first hearing of The Emperor’s Roads, but I just checked it out on Goodreads and it sounds pretty interesting.
I’m very curious to check him out as well. I like starting with short fiction with new authors sometimes:-)

Oh man. Black Sails just started back up so I’m ALLLLL about the pirates at the moment. Goodreads says it’s #2 in the series though so I’m confused because #1 appears to be very rare? And oh man, I just read the summary for The Emperor’s Railroad and I think I need that too. lol
