Waiting on Wednesday [177] – THE SMALLER EVIL by Stephanie Kuehn

Waiting on Wednesday is hosted by Breaking the Spine, and is a fun way to share upcoming books that you’re excited about with other bloggers and readers.

One thing you can always expect from a Stephanie Kuehn book is that…you should expect the unexpected! Stephanie’s books are full of weird twists and turns, and things never quite go the direction your brain wants them to go. Plus, her writing is BEAUTIFUL. Her latest is coming out next summer:

The Smaller EvilSometimes the greater good requires the smaller evil.

17-year-old Arman Dukoff is struggling with severe anxiety and a history of self-loathing when he arrives at an expensive self-help retreat in the remote hills of Big Sur. He’s taken a huge risk—and two-thousand dollars from his meth-head stepfather—for a chance to “evolve,” as Beau, the retreat leader, says.

Beau is complicated. A father figure? A cult leader? A con man? Arman’s not sure, but more than anyone he’s ever met, Beau makes Arman feel something other than what he usually feels—worthless.

The retreat compound is secluded in coastal California mountains among towering redwoods, and when the iron gates close behind him, Arman believes for a moment that he can get better. But the program is a blur of jargon, bizarre rituals, and incomprehensible encounters with a beautiful girl. Arman is certain he’s failing everything. But Beau disagrees; he thinks Arman has a bright future—though he never says at what.

And then, in an instant Arman can’t believe or totally recall, Beau is gone. Suicide? Or murder? Arman was the only witness and now the compound is getting tense. And maybe dangerous.

As the mysteries and paradoxes multiply and the hints become accusations, Arman must rely on the person he’s always trusted the least: himself.

The Smaller Evil by Stephanie Kuehn releases in August 2016 from Dutton Books for Young Readers. I can’t wait to get my hands on this! Have you read any of Stephanie’s books?

  1. Sounds really twisted and I can’t help but wonder how the cover ties in (if the cover ties in). I haven’t seen this one before so I will have to keep my eyes on it. I hear people talk about Charm & Strange from time to time and really like it.

I was wondering about the cover too. After reading her other books, I’m sure it has something to do with the story:-) Or at least metaphorically!

Her books are mostly contemporary, which may be why you haven’t heard of her, but they are pretty twisted, so for me she crosses that line into WTF, LOL:-)

Her books are not for everyone, and she really does write contemporary, but with lots of mind games.
