Over-Booked [40] – A Book Haul Post

over booked new

Welcome to Over-Booked, my twice-monthly book haul post, where I share my recent book acquisitions. I’m linking up with Stacking the Shelves at Tynga’s Reviews and The Sunday Post at The Caffeinated Book Reviewer.

I had a couple of very exciting books grace my mailbox this week, and I couldn’t be happier! I’ve also tried to stop requesting books for the rest of the year, but it’s so hard when things on my TBR keep popping up on Edelweiss and NetGalley! Luckily, I only have one new digital ARC to add to my pile, but I’m pretty excited about it too:-) Here are this week’s latest and greatest:

Physical books for review:

ob 12-5 1

A Daughter of No Nation (Hidden Sea Tales #2) by A. M. Dellamonica. This was a surprise from Tor, and I haven’t read the first book yet. However, I feel like I might have the digital version of Child of a Hidden Sea, so it may be easier to catch up than I think. Thank you Tor!

Black City Saint by Richard A. Knaak. I just requested this from Pyr and I was very excited when it showed up. Oh my, this book sounds CRAZY. Bootleggers, prohibition, Saint George and the dragon, the fae, and it all takes place in Chicago?? Can’t wait. Thank you Pyr!

A Gathering of Shadows by V.E. Schwab. I just about died when this showed up. I had requested it, but…you never know. HUGE thanks to Tor! I really loved A Darker Shade of Magic, and I can’t wait to see what happens next. Plus, that’s Delilah on the cover!!

Railhead by Philip Reeve. I recently featured this on Waiting on Wednesday, and I was so excited when a publicist asked if I’d like a copy. It just sounds so inventive and I can’t take my eyes off the cover! Thank you Switch Press:-)

Purchased:

ob 12-5 2

Was by Geoff Ryman. So, this book is pretty special. Geoff Ryman was one of my very favorite “pre-blog” authors, seems like a long time ago, and Was is an amazing story, a riff on The Wizard of Oz. As you can see, I have the original hardcover that was published in 1992. Lovely small press Small Beer Press just re-released it, which is the edition on the right. It was nominated for the World Fantasy Award for Best Novel in 1993 (but lost to Last Call by Tim Powers). I’m glad to see it’s being revived, and I hope more readers discover this book.

Digital books:

My Best Friend's Excorcism

My Best Friend’s Exorcism by Grady Hendrix. I really enjoyed Hendrix’s Horrorstör, and I can’t wait to read his next book! Big thanks to Quirk Books!

So that’s it for me! Let me know if you plan on reading any of these books:-)

I’m not sure I’ve read Air! I don’t think I own it so probably not. I also loved The Child Garden, although it is DEPRESSING. I want to reread Was to see if I still like it today.

  1. I’m really looking forward to Grady Hendrix’s next one too! I just got the e arc but haven’t had a chance to start. If it’s anywhere near as fun and funny as Horrorstör, though, it’s a guaranteed treat!

I’m curious about the cover. It says “cover not final” so I’m very curious to see how it ends up. Horrorstor was such an amazing production all around.

I hope you get the chance to read Was. I’d love to hear some other thoughts on it, especially since it’s been so long since I read it.

I probably won’t read BCS until maybe February, but it’s good to know someone who has enjoyed it:-)

  2. I’m excited for Railhead as I haven’t read a Phillips Reeve for a while, now, and I miss his imagination and bizarre/unique worlds. I have a good feeling about Railhead….
