Over – Booked [35] – A Book Haul Post

over booked new

Over-Booked is my every-other-week book haul post, where I’m linking up with Stacking the Shelves and The Sunday Post. I love to share the new books that make their way into my home, and I’d love to know if you plan on reading them too. So, yeah. I’m super behind in my September reading, partly because I’m reading a 600+ page book at the moment, and partly because my non-book life has been so freakin’ busy, I haven’t had as much time to read. Nonetheless, I managed to acquire a nice pile of new books, and a few were Edelweiss downloads (HarperCollins titles I couldn’t resist!). Here’s what’s new at Casa de Sparky:

Physical books:

HUGE thanks to the good folks at Skyhorse Publishing (who have several imprints that I love, including Night Shade Books and Yucca Publishing). I received a veritable bounty from them in the past two weeks, and some of these are perfect for the Halloween season!

The Ultimate Book of Zombie Warfare and Survival and The Zen of Zombie: Better Living Through the Undead by Scott Kenemore. These illustrated tongue-in-cheek guides to surviving zombie attacks and living a zombie lifestyle were published several years ago, but this is certainly the season to break out the zombie books, so I’m thrilled to get these and check them out.

At Death’s Door: A Picture Book for Grown-Ups by Ben Joel Price. This is literally a picture book, combined with a poem about what befalls a group of trick-or-treaters one Halloween night. I sat down and read this when it arrived, and it’s cute and silly, not my usual thing, but an interesting idea. I will probably do a short review, and maybe combine these three Halloween themed books in one.

Bat Out of Hell by Alan Gold. I have this on my plate to read this month (oh crap the month is almost over!!!), and Yucca Publishing kindly sent me a finished copy in addition to the ARC I already have.

The End of the Story: The Collected Fantasies Vol. 1 by Clark Ashton Smith. Smith is one of the granddaddies of the horror genre, and I couldn’t be more excited to read these short stories. Apparently, this is the first of several volumes that Night Shade is bringing back into print. This one covers Smith’s stories written between 1925 and 1930. Again, perfect timing for October!

Kill by Numbers (The Dangerous Type Trilogy #2) by Loren Rhoads. I need to catch up on book #1, but I’m glad to have the second book ready and waiting for me.

ob 9-19 1

The Weight of Feathers by Anna-Marie McLemore. Received for blog tour, with thanks to Thomas Dunne Books! I believe this is a circus-themed YA story, and it’s being compared to The Night Circus.

Welcome to Night Vale by Joseph Fink & Jeffrey Cranor. I won this from a blog called St. Merlinda’s School for Magical Misfits, which mostly does podcasts, but for some reason I was directed there because I knew they were giving away a copy of this book. I was pretty excited to have won this ARC, so big thanks to Kayley at St. Merlinda’s!

Nebula Awards Showcase 2015 edited by Greg Bear. I was really happy when a publicist at Pyr offered me a review copy of this book. There are both familiar and unfamiliar names on the roster (including Ann Leckie, Aliette de Bodard, Ken Liu, Nalo Hopkinson and more). This is a mix of short stories and essays, and I believe there is an excerpt from Ancillary Justice. The editor has also included the nominees, as well as the winners, so it should be a fun read. Thank you Pyr!

Dragon Coast by Greg van Eekhout. A finished copy courtesy of Tor! This showed up unexpectedly, since I have already read and reviewed my ARC copy, but I do love this series, and I’m thrilled to have this. Or perhaps I’ll give it away someday, who knows…

Digital review copies:

A few HarperCollins titles popped up for download on Edelweiss lately, and what a coincidence, some of them were Waiting on Wednesday picks! How could I NOT download them, LOL??

Mr. Fahrenheit by T. Michael Martin. This grabbed my attention because: “Stephen King meets Super 8.” Enough said. Thank you Balzer + Bray!

The Abyss Surrounds Us by Emily Skrutskie. Big thanks to Flux for approving me! I featured this book a couple of weeks ago as my Waiting on Wednesday, and I was thrilled to see it pop up on NetGalley.

Bluescreen by Dan Wells. Another WoW pick, this is one of HarperCollins downloadable titles on Edelweiss, so I didn’t even hesitate before clicking the button!

Revenge and the Wild by Michelle Modesto. This was nearly a WoW pick, LOL! Magic and a western setting? That combination will get me every time:-)

The Flux by Ferrett Steinmetz. Big thanks to Angry Robot for this copy! I’ll admit I have yet to read Flex, the first book in the series, but since this was up on NetGalley and I knew it was about to be pulled down, I grabbed it, knowing that I’m dying to start this series. Everyone I know loves it!

The Weight of Chains by Lesley Conner. I’ve known Lesley for several years as an editor at Apex Books, and she’s a writer as well. She contacted me and asked if I would read her new horror novel, and of course I said yes! Don’t you love the cover?? This book isn’t yet up on Goodreads, so I’ve linked to Lesley’s website. Thank you Lesley!

And that’s it! Now if someone could please freeze time so I can read all these!!

  1. Wow huge amazing bounty this week! When I saw those Harper titles on Edel as well, I thought of you, since I probably wouldn’t have heard of Bluescreen and The Abyss Surrounds Us if it weren’t for your WoWs 🙂 And Skyhorse is ever awesome in their generosity, I’m really excited to check out The Zen of Zombie because it looked really cute/funny when I flipped through it!

I’m always tickled when a WoW pick shows up on NetGalley/Edelweiss shortly after I post about it. It’s like I’m psychic or something, LOL!

  2. You have so many books I want to hear about! Been curious about Bat Out of Hell for a while, and I now Night Vale podcast is very popular, but I never listened it, so I wonder how that novel will turn out. I feel like At Death’s Door will be amazing, and I remember The Abyss Surrounds Us from your WoW! 🙂

Yeah, I’m not listening to the podcast so I don’t know much about the story. It will be interesting to see how it translates to a novel.
