Over-Booked [28] – A Book Haul Post

over booked new

Welcome to Over-Booked, my bi-weekly post where I share my latest book acquisitions. I’m linking up with Stacking the Shelves over at Tynga’s Reviews and The Sunday Post at the Caffeinated Book Reviewer. Lots of new goodies arrived this week, in the form of both purchases and review acquisitions. And I received an exciting book from a blogger friend too:-) Here’s what I have this week:

Physical copies for review:

ob 6-27 2

The Gods of Laki by Chris Angus. Skyhorse Publishing has so many different imprints! This is a new one to me, Yucca Publishing, and it sounds really good. A mash-up of characters from different time periods, including Vikings (!) and it takes place in Iceland. Thank you Yucca!

The Unnoticeables by Robert Brockway. I had requested this from Tor, but in the end, it was the author’s agent that found my blog and offered me a copy. Chuck Wendig gave this book a blurb, and now I’m even more psyched to read it. And Brockway is going to be at Comic Con!! Big thanks to Sam at JABerwocky Literary Agency:-)

Illuminae by Amie Kaufman & Jay Kristoff. I was thrilled that Anne from Lovely Literature offered me her BEA copy, and it arrived this week. Guys, this is a hardcover ARC and it’s huge! It’s also one of the most interesting book designs I’ve ever seen. I’m looking forward to immersing myself in it, I think it’s going to be a cool experience. Thank you Anne!

What We Knew by Barbara Stewart. Thank you to St. Martin’s Griffin for the review copy! I was offered this for review, but now that I’m looking at the Goodreads ratings, I’m not so sure…Creepy man in the woods + two young girls = trouble…

Digital copies for review:

While You WEre Gone Darkness Brutal The Devil's Woods For Exposure

While You Were Gone by Amy K. Nichols. This is a companion novel to Nichols’ Now That You’re Here, and the publicist who offered this to me said it can be read as a standalone. It sounds really good, and I’m looking forward to reading it soon. Thank you Knopf Books for Young Readers!

Darkness Brutal by Rachel A. Marks. I had a couple of authors approach me directly this week, and I said “yes” to both of them. Rachel’s book is being published by Skyscape (who suddenly seems to be all over the place!) Oooh, a book about demons! I can’t wait. Thanks so much, Rachel!

The Devil’s Woods by Brian Moreland. Brian also wrote to me recently. He has six horror books under his belt with Samhain Publishing, and he did something really smart. He wrote to me and offered me a choice of his books. I’m not sure why this delighted me as much as it did, but it worked! I actually went to Goodreads and checked out all six books, then decided to pick one and give Brian a try. Thank you Brian!

For Exposure: The Life and Times of a Small Press Publisher by Jason Sizemore. Thank you Apex! I can’t wait to read this. Jason Sizemore runs Apex Publications, and this is his personal story about his journey from the dreary life of corporate America to starting a small publishing company. I’ve also preordered a signed physical copy from the publisher, which should be arriving any day now.

Purchased:

ob 6-27

The Fold by Peter Clines. I’ve read nothing by rave reviews of this book, and I couldn’t resist any longer!

The Library at Mount Char by Scott Hawkins. I do believe this is a hidden treasure, and will end up being one of the best fantasy books of the year. I didn’t request this for review because I didn’t know much about it. But now that reviews are starting to come in, and since it was just released, I just had to pick up a copy.

Nimona by Noelle Stevenson. I don’t read many graphic novels, and I’m trying to change that. But I’m very picky about my purchases, and it takes some seriously awesome reviews to get me to plunk down money these days. This book has amazing reviews, and the rest is history!

So that’s it for me this week! Have you read any of these? Which ones should I move to the top of my pile?

  1. Wow, I guess they are going all out for Illumininae, I’ve never seen a hardcover ARC! I hope you enjoy it, I still haven’t even checked my eARC file from NetGalley to see if the images and stuff will come through, but if not I figured I’ll just put it on the backburner and wait for the final. And the Unnoticeables looks intriguing! That cover is kind of terrifying though 🙂

I also hope you like The Fold – I loved it; very Michael Crichton-y, if you enjoy that stuff. And I’ve also been hearing some rave things about The Library at Mount Char! Tiara/digitaltempest is reading that and I am so curious to see her review.

I saw that Tiara is reading The Library at Mount Char and I’m looking forward to her review! And as far as Illuminae goes, as long as you can read it on a tablet, and not your computer, it should be fine. Some of the pages are sideways so you’ll have to turn it to read it.

I don’t have room either! But I couldn’t say no to this one. I really love what Apex is doing and I’m so curious about their origins.

  2. Yay! You got a physical copy of Illuminae! I really want to hear what the book is all about and what people think. And I like the set up of What We Knew. Wonder what’s causing the low Goodreads rating?
