Over-Booked [27] – A Book Haul Post

over booked new

Welcome to Over-Booked, my bi-weekly post where I share my latest book acquisitions. I’m linking up with Stacking the Shelves over at Tynga’s Reviews and The Sunday Post at the Caffeinated Book Reviewer. This week marked the arrival of a book I’ve been waiting YEARS (?) to read, and an ARC that I’ve put my heart and soul into acquiring. I guess all that hard work paid off, because for some reason, I received two copies, LOL! Here’s my book haul this week:

Physical books:

ob 6-13

Look closely at the three books at the top. You can see I am just slightly obsessed with Daryl Gregory:-D I recently read and ADORED Afterparty, and so I immediately went to Barnes & Noble and bought the three Gregory books I haven’t yet read: The Devil’s Alphabet, Raising Stony Mayhall, and Pandemonium. Lots of backlist goodness!

Everybody Rise by Stephanie Clifford. Won from Goodreads! I can’t believe I won a Goodreads giveaway, but I’m pretty happy about this one. Even though this is strictly literary fiction, I’ve had my eye on it since I saw this amazing bright green cover.

Splintered by Jamie Schultz. BIG thanks to Jamie for sending a copy of book two in his Arcane Underworld series to me! I really loved the first in his series, Premonitions, and I can’t wait to read this one. This is an early July release, so look for a review soon.

Delicate Monsters by Stephanie Kuehn. Big thanks to St. Martin’s Griffin for this finished copy! I loved Charm & Strange, and this looks very good. Plus, it’s super short and will be easy to squeeze in.

Drum roll…Armada by Ernest Cline! So yeah, I’ve been trying to get this ARC since March, and I even connected with a very nice publicist who said she’d put me on the list. But you know how things go, I didn’t receive it, and so I boldly sent another email to her. She said she’d send it to me, provided I promised not to post a review until the release date. I said yes, and then I waited some more. I had given up, but then it finally showed up, and then the next day I got a second copy, LOL! I offered it to Bonnie who saw my tweet right away and responded with appropriate enthusiasm:-D Thank you Crown!

Digital review copies:

Illuminae  The Fifth House of the Heart  Dawnbreaker  After Alice

Illuminae by Amie Kaufman & Jay Kristoff. Super excited to be approved for this book! Although from what I hear this is a very visual story, and the digital version might not translate as well. If anyone has an extra physical copy from BEA that they’re willing to part with—and I promise to make a good trade with you, maybe something from Comic Con??—please let me know! Thanks to Knopf!

The Fifth House of the Heart by Ben Tripp. I have a copy of Tripp’s YA book, The Accidental Highwayman, but it’s been pushed to the bottom of the pile. I’m looking forward to this vampire story, which looks like a new take on the genre. Thank you Gallery Books!

Dawnbreaker by Jay Posey. This is the third and final book in Posey’s Legends of the Duskwalker series, and even though I wasn’t crazy about book two, I ADORED the first book. So I’m hoping for a strong finish to this series. Thank you Angry Robot!

After Alice by Gregory Maguire. I just featured this on Waiting on Wednesday, and it popped up on Edelweiss the next day. Of course I had to request it:-) Thanks to William Morrow.

In other news, I found out yesterday that Wesley Chu will be at San Diego Comic Con this year! I’m so freaking excited, I can’t even.

So let me know if you plan on reading any of these books:-D

  1. Nice haul. I nabbed an ARC of The Fifth House of the Heart a while ago, and actually went looking for After Alice after seeing your WOW post. Hoping my first taste of Maguire is a good one.

I’m very excited about the new Maguire, and I hope it lives up to my reading experience with Wicked:-)

Ha ha, yes I finally figured out that cover. The eyes are actually upside down, that’s why it looks so weird!

i saw all the hard cover ARCs of Illuminae on bloggers’ BEA haul posts, and I wish I had one:-)

  2. I got a copy of Splintered and Armada this week as well! It’s funny because I was actually inquiring about another book when the opportunity to review Armada ended up kind of falling in my lap, so of course I was like YES PLEASE! I admit I already finished it, for an unrepentant addict to video games, I really couldn’t resist diving into it right away. 😛 There are so many Star Wars and gaming references in it, I was in heaven. I’ve also been hearing a lot about Fifth House, though it’s probably not for me – I’d be interested in seeing your thoughts and a few other bloggers I know who got it. I love the cover of Dawnbreaker, though I pooped out at book 2 so I didn’t request book 3. And now I’m also worried about my eARC for Illuminae. Have you checked it to see which visuals aren’t translating well? If they’re central to the story and not coming through well in the digital format, that could be a problem and a possible dealbreaker for me. I don’t know if I can review if I’m missing crucial parts.

I just tried out Illuminae on my computer-unfortunately you can’t read it on Kindle – and so far I’m not impressed. Some of the pages are sideways, which will be impossible on a computer. I’m going to try it on my Samsung tablet, maybe it will work better. Otherwise I might send an email to the publisher telling them I can’t review it.

I hope to start Armada very soon! As for Dawnbreaker, I read book 2 but I didn’t enjoy it that much, but I do feel loyal to the series, so I want to see how it ends:-)

Everybody Rise does sound good, it’s not my usual read so I’m looking forward to a change of pace!

  3. Haha, Goodreads giveaway wins are always so awesome – and surprising! Ready Player One was a huge surprise for me when I read it, since I never thought I’d enjoy a book so focused on video games. But I LOVED Cline’s style so I’m very excited about Armada! Haven’t heard much about Delicate Monsters but that one looks interesting too. Happy reading! 🙂

Yes, that cover! Totally weirded me out, and then I turned the book upside down and realized those are normal eyes, but they are upside down!

  4. Armada arrived here this week as well, along with Aurora by Kim Stanley Robinson. My brother-in-law is salivating over Armada, so I better get it read soon, I’m bogged down in Seveneves right now, hope to spend the day tomorrow finishing it.

  5. Armada is shaping up to seem like an interesting read and I hope you like it! I also know how much you were looking forward to Illuminae, and I can imagine you reading that one very soon. 😀

  6. Armada!!! I’ve been waiting so long for that book – it better be good.
I think you are going to like ‘The Fifth House of the Heart ‘, it’s definitely not usual hero or vampires…
I’ve got ‘After Alice’ from Edelweiss too.
A lot of awesome books, what can I say, except – happy reading. 🙂

  7. So I have a copy of Illuminae from BEA that I would be happy to send to you. It wasn’t one that was even on my radar, but they had toooons of copies. Let me read it, and I’ll send it your way within the next week or so? Does that work?

Also, Armada haunts me. I did not realize they were giving out copies at BEA, and I missed it. -_-

Oh good! Yes, you should probably do the same and wait for July 14th to post your review (I think that’s the date). I’m not sure what other bloggers have been told, but I want to go by the rules:-) Enjoy!
