Over-Booked [26] – A Book Haul Post

over booked new

Welcome to Over-Booked, my bi-weekly post where I share my latest book acquisitions! I’m linking up with Stacking the Shelves over at Tynga’s Reviews and The Sunday Post at the Caffeinated Book Reviewer. It’s been a busy two weeks, especially in my mailbox. But I have been very good about cutting back on NetGalley and Edelweiss requests, so I just have a few digital ARCs this week.

Physical books for review:

ob 5-30

Trial of Intentions by Peter Orullian. Thanks to Tor Books for this surprise book! I’ve been reading great reviews of this series, and I’d love to try it out, although the page count is a bit daunting.

Supersymmetry by David Walton. Another surprise in the mail, this time from Pyr, but one I’m very excited about. The publicist assured me I can read this one without having first read Walton’s Superposition. Thank you Pyr!

Cocoon by David Saperstein. And one more surprise, from Talos. I’m really excited to read this reprint of the 1985 edition, on which the Academy Award winning movie of the same name was based. Thanks so much, Talos!

Dragon Coast (Daniel Blackland #3) by Greg van Eekhout. Huge thanks to Tor for this request! This is one of my favorite UF series, and I can’t wait to see how it wraps up.

Digital ARCs:

Time Salvager by Wesley Chu. Releases in July from Tor Books. So a bit of a dilemma here: I’ve actually been trying to get a review copy of this book for some time, but haven’t had any luck. Then it pops up on NetGalley, but it’s under Angry Robot Books for some reason. Since I’m auto-approved for AR, I immediately clicked the “download” button, but then I thought, “Why the heck is AR listing this book?” I sent an email to the publicist I work with, and she said something about begin the UK distributors for Tor. I’m still not sure I understand, but then I got an email from AR saying only UK bloggers are allowed to request Time Salvager. So now I’m all kinds of confused. Whoops, I downloaded it but I wasn’t supposed to, now what do I do? Do I read it anyway? I mean, it’s on my Kindle for crying out loud! I did send AR another email fessing up to downloading it by accident, but they didn’t really answer my question. Has anyone else in the US had this same experience? I’d love to know your thoughts:-)

Darkhaven by A.F.E. Smith. Releases in July from HarperVoyager. I received an email from the author asking me to be on her blog tour and I agreed. I’m in love with this cover, and I’m looking forward to reading this.

The Undying Legion by Clay and Susan Griffiths. I really had fun with book one, and this is the second book in their new Crown & Key series. Releases in June from Del Rey.

Purchased/Won:

The Gracekeepers by Kirsty Logan. I adored this book, and because I read it in digital ARC form, I knew I needed my own copy. I decided to purchase the UK edition from The Book Depository, because LOOK HOW GORGEOUS!! That bottom photo is the book without the dust jacket. Stunning.

The Border by Robert McCammon. I just received this signed copy from Subterranean Press that I ordered a couple of months ago. It’s been getting rave reviews, and I can’t wait to read it!

An Ember in the Ashes by Sabaa Tahir. I won this prize pack of an ARC and t-shirt from the blog tour for this book, and I usually mention the blog that was responsible, but for some reason I can’t find that information. In any case, big thanks to Penguin Young Readers for this fabulous prize!

And just for fun…The lovely folks at SF Signal asked me to participate in Mind Meld again, and that post went up this past week. In case you don’t know, Mind Meld is a feature where authors and bloggers are asked a particular question and all the different answers are posted. This week the question was, “What fallow universe do you think deserves additional exploration, and who would you ask to write in that world?” You can read all our answers here. Lots of fun, but I always worry that I’m answering the question wrong, LOL! It’s a bit stressful, but a big honor to be asked:-D

I’ve love to hear if you’ve read any of these books!

  1. Wow, nice haul! Trial of Intentions was a big read, but I found it went by pretty quickly. I wish I had time for the Crown & Key series, because it definitely looks interesting, but I just can’t commit to 3 books. As for The Border, I’m a bit jealous you landed a copy of that!

I pre-ordered The Border as soon as I got the email from Subterranean announcing it. I know their books can sometimes go quickly, so I was really happy to get one:-)

  2. Lots of lovely goodies. I’ve got the Wesley Chu – I think if you’re on the approved list I don’t see any problem with you reading to be honest – I suppose you could take a look at the release dates and see what the difference is between US/UK??
I’ve also got Darkhaven – I do love the cover!
I like the look of the Undying Legion but it’s the second in series and I don’t know that I just want to start any more series at the moment – unless I complete a few to compensate.
    Happy reading.

I completely understand what you mean about series. At this point I don’t even try to catch up. If I can get in on a series with the first book, fine, but otherwise it’s too stressful:-D

I guess I won’t worry too much about it. I did tell the publisher that I made a mistake, so it’s not like I’m trying to be sneaky:-)

  3. I caved and requested The Undying Legion too! And Dragon Coast is almost coming out now? Oh no, I need to catch up with the second book 🙂

With regards to Time Salvager, that’s a tough call. On the one hand, publishers take their international copyrights and such very seriously. On the other, it was really their oversight for not taking in account the auto approvals. In any case, even if you fessed up though, I can’t see them going after you telling you not to read it or else. 🙂

I haven’t given up yet on Tor, I’m going to try one more time to get a copy. It’s just so hard finding the right publicist!

  4. Nice haul, Tammy! I’m reading AN EMBER IN THE ASHES now, so I’ll be interested in reading your opinion once you get to it.

  5. Time Salvager sounds awesome, I love the premise of that! And the cover- has that kinda gritty futuristic feel to it. This one is new t ome so I appreciate you mentioning it. 🙂 As for the dilemma- hopefully AR doesn’t get too picky about it. Interesting that it’s AR too- I’ve read a few books under that imprint I liked.

  6. You are a long-time fan and avid supporter of AR, I say go for it and read Time Salvager. 🙂 It sounds way to good to resist, plus it sounds like a very ‘Tammy’ book so you’ll probably give it a positive review! I’m also hoping to read An Ember in the Ashes this month, although I’m a little bit wary because of all the hype.

  7. Dark Haven has such a beautiful cover, and just looking at it had me intrigued. Also, I would really like to read An Ember in the Ashes so I can admire your copy there! Hope you like it too.
