What’s On My Plate – August 2014

On My Plate

And July is over, just like that! This year is flying by, right? August in my little town means “back to school” for my kids. Only two more weeks of “summer” for us, unfortunately. But in blogging, August is looking like a terrific month for books. I’ve got a full plate of review books, but I hope to sneak in a few non-review books from the TBR pile as well. One big perk this month: I don’t have any blog tours. I’ve really made an effort to cut back, especially since I’ve found that many blog tour books have disappointed me. Now I only do blog tours if it’s a book I’m already planning on reading. So here’s what I have on my plate:

For review:

Best British Horror 2014, edited by Johnny Mains. This collection is published by Salt Publishing, one of my very favorite small presses. I’m looking forward to reading these stories by mostly unknown-to-me authors.

Broken Forest by Eliza Tilton. One of my now-rare indie books that I decided to review, Eliza sent me a copy of her book months ago, so it’s high time I made time to read it.

The Apex Book of World SF 3, edited by Lavie Tidhar. I’m super excited to read this group of short stories from all over the world, from another of my very favorite small presses, Apex Books.

100 Sideways Miles by Andrew Smith. Gosh darn it, I had hoped to catch up on some other Smith titles by now (Grasshopper Jungle and Winger), but I just haven’t had time. I guess this will be my first Andrew Smith book!

Jackaby by William Ritter. “Doctor Who meets Sherlock.” I’m always up for a really good “blank meets blank,” so let’s hope this delivers!

The Bullet-Catcher’s Daughter by Rod Duncan. Not exactly sure what this is about, but I’m intrigued by the cover.

Station Eleven by Emily St. John Mandel. I’m slightly worried about this one. This was a spur-of-the-moment request, and it sounds really odd. But hey, I love odd, so we’ll see!

The Mirror Empire by Kameron Hurley. I’ve heard amazing things about this book, and many of my fellow blogger friends will be reviewing this as well. Can’t wait! Oh, and this is one blog tour I jumped to be on. My stop is in September.

The Godless by Ben Peek. My recent Goodreads win, I’m actually going to start reading this book today.

Other things going on this month:

Honestly, for the first time in months I don’t have much planned for the blog! No blog tours, no book events. I will probably do my Book Review Giveaway in a couple of weeks, so keep watching for that. As usual, I may sneak in some books that aren’t on the schedule, but we’ll see. I’m going to try to read all of these review books if I can.

So, what kind of a month do you have planned? Let me know:-)

  1. Oh wow, I haven’t heard any of these books, but they all look really good!
We don’t start school until September 2nd, but I’m already dreading it :p

  2. Great picks! I’m eager to hear what you think of the new Andrew Smith, and Jackaby too. Sounds like you are set up for success in August!

  3. The Mirror Empire! Jackaby! Basically anything by Andrew Smith! What a great selection. I bet it’ll be a nice change to have some extra time for reading what with things being quiet on the blogging front. Enjoy the downtime, Tammy – you’ve been super busy this summer!
