Waiting on Wednesday (91) BEWARE THE WILD by Natalie C. Parker

WOW banner 2014 copy

Waiting on Wednesday is hosted by Breaking the Spine and is a fun way to share the books you’re excited about with other readers. The book I really wanted to use as my WoW pick this week, unfortunately, has the ugly words “Entertainment Weekly” stamped across its cover. Yuck! So we’ll just save that one for another time. Meanwhile, I ran across this stunning cover, and the story sounds terrific:

Beware the Wild by Natalie C. Parker. Release date: October 21 2014 (HarperTeen).  Louisiana, swamps, and Mardi Gras? This sounds creepy as hell. I want it right now! Here’s what Goodreads says:

There’s something about the swamp in Sticks, Louisiana. Something different, something haunting . . . something alive. Everyone knows this, and everyone avoids going near it. And even the Mardi Gras–bead-decorated fence that surrounds it keeps people away.

Until one morning when Sterling Saucier’s older brother Phineas runs into the swamp . . .

And doesn’t return.

Instead, a girl named Lenora May climbs out in his place, and all of a sudden, no one in Sticks remembers Phin at all. They treat Lenora May as if she’s been Sterling’s sister forever.

Sterling needs to figure out what the swamp’s done with her beloved brother and how Lenora May is connected to his disappearance—but first she’s got to find someone who believes her.

Heath Durham might be that someone. A loner shrouded behind rumors of drug addiction, Heath has had his own strange experience with the swamp. He and Sterling will have to piece together enough bits of memory and ancient swamp lore to get to the truth. But as the wild swamp encroaches on their town, Sterling and Heath may find a lot more than they expected . . . and Phin may be lost to them forever.

I can’t wait to get my hands on this! Let me know what you’re waiting on this week!

  1. Great pick, I hadn’t heard of this before today but it’s on my wishlist now! You’re right, it does sound amazingly creepy and I want to read it now – October seems like a long way away!

  2. OMG, yet another book I’d never heard before that you may just have turned me on to. You’re beginning to make a habit out of this 😉

And haha, I know what you wanted to feature! I’m still trying to hunt down that cover! Hopefully I’ll find it by next Wednesday for the next WoW.

    • Maybe Mr. Brown has the cover without the EW logo, ha ha! He actually replied to my tweet the other day and said he didn’t even realize the cover was up on Shelf Life:)

  3. How have I not heard about this book until now!? Swamps and siblings and mysterious boys and sinister wildlife? These are a few of my favorite things! (I was actually tinkering with a swamp creature novel myself, so this would totally get me in the mindset to revisit that old file, I bet.) Part of me doesn’t want to wait until Summer to read this, when it was Mardi Gras so recently, but on the other hand I know it’ll probably be great for an afternoon when it’s too hot to do anything but read.

At the moment I’m most excited for Mark Of The Dragonfly to hit shelves at the end of the month – one of the best ARCs I’ve read in a while.
