Stacking the Shelves (42)

STS

Stacking the Shelves is hosted by Tynga’s Reviews and is a fun way to share your book haul with other bloggers and readers. This is my haul from the past two weeks. I’m trying my darnedest NOT to visit NetGalley and Edelweiss (although it’s hard now that Harper Collins has granted me free access to all their titles!). I have a reading plan for 2014, but it involves not overloading myself with e-ARCs that I never have time to read.  Here’s what’s on my shelves this week:

e-ARCs from NetGalley & Edelweiss:

NIL by Lynne Matson. Release date: March 4 2014 (Henry Holt). This has awesome reviews already on Goodreads, and I’m dying to read it. Unfortunately, this is one of those e-galleys that isn’t formatted for Kindle, so I have to read it on my old Nook and make sure to watch the expiration date. I hate that! That’s the reason I switched to Kindle in the first place, so I wouldn’t have to stress out over my book expiring.

TALKER 25 by Joshua McCune. Release date: April 22 2014 (Harper Collins/Greenwillow). A book with dragons! This story is set in the future, and as I said, has dragons. Can’t wait!

Shadowplay by Laura Lam. Release date: January 4 2014 (Strange Chemistry). This is book two, after Lam’s Pantomime, which I really loved. A tale of magic and circuses, I am really looking forward to this one.

From Publisher for review:

From the Fatherland, With Love by Ryu Murakami. Published by Pushkin Press, UK. This book came unsolicited from a publicist I just started working with, and it looks very interesting, although it’s also much longer than my usual review books (over 650 pages!), so I’m not sure when I’ll be able to get to it. Also, in the cover mystery department, this is another instance of a book cover that doesn’t exist anywhere on the internet! So if you click on the link above and go to Goodreads, you’ll see a different cover. It looks like a reprint of a book that was originally released in 2005, so perhaps this new cover just hasn’t made it to the internet yet.

The Book of Apex: Volume 4 of Apex Magazine, edited by Lynne M. Thomas. I adore Apex Publications, and this will be the first time I’ve reviewed anything from the magazine arm of Apex. This is a short story collection and brings together a sample of stories from the first fifteen issues of Apex Magazine.

Purchased:

001

The Goldfinch by Donna Tartt. Just released. Tartt is one of my favorite literary authors, and her latest was over ten years in the writing!

Man Made Boy by Jon Skovron. On the high recommendation of my buddy Tabitha, I’ve gone ahead and purchased this. I can’t wait to get to it!

Wonderbook: The Illustrated Guide to Creating Imaginative Fiction by Jeff Vandermeer. This book is AWESOME. I bought it on a whim, thinking it might come in handy during NaNoWriMo, and it has exceeded my expectations! This book is a gem, people. It’s full color and gorgeously illustrated, and lots of cool authors and artists have contributed to it. It’s impossible to give you the full effect with my crappy little camera, you really have to see it in person. But here’s an idea of what’s inside:

If you’ve ever been interested in writing imaginative fiction, this book is a must-have.

That’s my haul! What did you get this week?

  1. You are a better person than me resisting HC on Edelweiss! I hear ya about getting overloaded with e-arc’s though. I hate reading e-pubs too- much easier on kindle.

Wonderbook does look good! I’ll keep that one in mind. The Nil cover reminds me of a less spooky version of The End Games.

    Happy reading and writing, Tammy!

  2. The cover for From the Fatherland, With Love you hold is the new paperback cover! The one currently on Goodreads is the hardback one which came out in Spring. All good, and enjoy Ryu Murakami, we think he’s amazing!

Woohoo Man Made Boy! I hope you love it. Its simple in some ways but for YA I really loved it. It was just what I needed at the time. can’t wait to hear what you think.

  4. I will immediately take hold of your rss as I can’t to find your e-mail subscription hyperlink or newsletter service.
