Waiting on Wednesday #27 – HER SKY COWBOY by Beth Ciotta

Waiting on Wednesday is hosted by Breaking the Spine, and it’s always one of my favorite blog events to participate in! This week I’m waiting on:

Her Sky Cowboy by Beth Ciotta. Release date: November 6th 2012 (Signet). OK, I am so in love with the idea of a Steampunk Western…which this book seems to be. I mean, look at this cover! It’s fantastic! Publishers Weekly gave Her Sky Cowboy a starred review, and I always trust PW when it comes to reviews. Here the description from Goodreads:

Amelia Darcy has no interest in marrying well. Her heart belongs to the sky and the dirigibles of brass and steel that swoop over Victorian England. But when her father, an eccentric inventor, dies, the Darcy siblings are left with scrap metal—and not a penny to their names. Their only hope to save the family name and fortune is to embark on a contest to discover an invention of historical importance in honor of Queen Victoria. Armed with only her father’s stories of a forgotten da Vinci workshop, a mechanically enhanced falcon, and an Italian cook, Amelia takes flight for Florence, Italy. But her quest is altered when her kitecycle crashes into the air ship of ex–Air Marshal—and scandalous dime novel hero—Tucker Gentry. Challenged by political unrest, a devious sky pirate, and their own sizzling attraction, Amelia and Tuck are dragged into an international conspiracy that could change the course of history…again.

I particularly love the strange steampunk gun the guy is holding. What are you waiting on this week?

  1. I’ll be honest – I’ve never read a steampunk novel before, let alone a steampunk western, but this one has me wanting to. I’ve already added to my TBR list. For some reason, the dress and the gun remind me of Final Fantasy (the video game, not the movie) which I love. Thanks for the awesome recommendation.

I’m a new follower here and would love it if you would check out my WoW pick.

  2. A steampunk western???!? Ahh, just the name has me excited. One of my favorite shows is Joss Whedon’s Firefly, which sort of combines sci-fi with Western, so I hope this book has a similar feel to it! Great pick, Tammy! I’ll definitely keep an eye on this one. 🙂

    • That’s exactly what this reminded me of, Lauren! Firefly (although I don’t know why I didn’t mention it in the post). Thank you for chiming in!! I love ALL things Joss Whedon, as if anyone didn’t know that by now:)

I just finished this book. It was slow at the beginning but a bit intriguing so I kept reading. It seemed to be pretty good but wow was the ending lacking. To me it came up flat and a little too easy for all problems resolved. All of a sudden Sky Cowboy was free from blame and everyone was pardoned??? Give me a break! The travel and various flying contraptions were very interesting and the chemistry was good. There ending was anti-climatic for sure.
