Stacking the Shelves #3

Stacking the Shelves is a weekly event hosted by Tynga’s Reviews, and is a great way for bloggers to share the books we’ve received during the week. It’s been a few weeks since I’ve had anything to share, but suddenly I have a huge pile that I need to dive into! I recently started using Edelweiss (similar to NetGalley) and last week I received several ebooks through this wonderful service. Each book cover below is linked to Goodreads if you want more information about the stories. Here’s my big pile of books:

I Am (Not) the Walrus by Ed Briant. Won from Story Carnivores.  This music-centric story looks like a lot of fun. Complete with a Beatles cover band called The Nowhere Men, a stolen bass, and some romance as well, I’m looking forward to reading this soon. Thanks Story Carnivores!

God Save the Queen by Kate Locke. Purchased. This was a Waiting on Wednesday pick a while back, and now it’s in my hot little hands! It’s a very cool design as well, a smaller-than-usual trim size without a dust jacket. Orbit really knows how to design books. Beautiful!

Team Human by Justine Larbalestier & Sarah Rees Brennan. Purchased. Another WOW pick, I can finally read this book, which author Maureen Johnson blurbs: “…If you love vampire books, this is the book for you—if you hate vampire books, this is also the book for you.”

Tiger Lily by Jodi Lynn Anderson. Purchased. I’ve been reading some amazing reviews from other blogger friends about this book, and I hope to find out for myself soon just how good it is!

Jasper Jones by Craig Silvey. Purchased. This has been out for a while, and I just recently came across it. This coming-of-age story by Aussie Silvey won the Michael L. Printz award, which is a big deal. The beautiful cover evokes a feeling of mystery and dread. I’d love to know if anyone out there has read it yet!

Albert of Adelaide by Howard L. Anderson. Purchased. Speaking of Australia, this quirky tale is about a platypus named Albert who escapes from the Adelaide Zoo and goes on a journey through the outback to find his place in the world. No, it’s not YA, it’s adult fiction. Author Mary Doria Russell has this to say about the book: “If Larry McMurtry had written Wind in the Willows, he might have come up with something almost as wonderful and moving as Howard Anderson’s Albert of Adelaide. This is a novel that defies analysis and summaries. Trust me. Just read it.”

Nope, not done yet!

Stealing Breath by Joanne Brothwell. Received a review copy from the author. This paranormal romance, that sports a gorgeous cover, by the way, looks really good. It’s about a girl named Sarah who discovers she can feel the emotions of others. Look for my review of Stealing Breath this month.

The Devil in Silver by Victor LaValle. Received a review copy from Random House Publishing Group via Edelweiss.  This is billed as “literary horror,” my favorite kind! It’s a story about four inmates trapped in a haunted mental ward who have to fight for their lives—against the devil. Wow, doesn’t that sound amazing? Review coming this month!

Incarnation by Emma Cornwall. Received a review copy from Gallery Books via Edelweiss. OK, this sounds seriously cool: Lucy Weston, from Bram Stoker’s Dracula, tries to track down Bram Stoker to find out why he lied about her in his famous book. The setting is steampunk Victorian London, and Lucy is, you guessed it, a vampire! Awesome. Release date: September 18 2012.

That’s it for now. I’d love to hear what’s on your shelves this week!

  1. Team Human! Incarnation!! Squee! I also recently got Tiger Lily. I’ve mostly read great reviews, but I’ve also read a few not-so-great reviews. So I can’t wait to see which side of the spectrum we fall on! Happy reading. 🙂
