Waiting on Wednesday #12 – OUTPOST by Ann Aguirre

Waiting on Wednesday is a weekly event hosted by Breaking the Spine, where bloggers can feature upcoming books they’re looking forward to. My book this week is:

Outpost by Ann Aguirre. Release date: September 4 2012, Feiwel & Friends. I haven’t yet read the first book in Ann’s Razorland series, Enclave, but it’s been on my radar, and now that the second book is on the horizon, I’m planning on catching up. These books have seen comparisons to The Hunger Games for their post-apocalyptic themes, but the stories look quite different. Here’s the description of Outpost from Goodreads:

Deuce’s whole world has changed. Down below, she was considered an adult. Now, topside in a town called Salvation, she’s a brat in need of training in the eyes of the townsfolk. She doesn’t fit in with the other girls: Deuce only knows how to fight.

To make matters worse, her Hunter partner, Fade, keeps Deuce at a distance. Her feelings for Fade haven’t changed, but he seems not to want her around anymore. Confused and lonely, she starts looking for a way out.

Deuce signs up to serve in the summer patrols—those who make sure the planters can work the fields without danger. It should be routine, but things have been changing on the surface, just as they did below ground. The Freaks have grown smarter. They’re watching. Waiting. Planning. The monsters don’t intend to let Salvation survive, and it may take a girl like Deuce to turn back the tide.

I’d love to hear from anyone’s who’s read Enclave. Was it good? What books are you waiting on?

  1. I liked Enclave pretty well, though I listened to the audio and didn’t love the narrator. You’re right that the story is not at all similar to The Hunger Games. At WonderCon the author talked about how readers got mad at her because they thought she was trying to capitalize on the success of THG, though of course she had no control over how the publisher chose to market it. The character names are a little silly and distracting but overall I think you’d like the story.

  2. I’ve been wanting to read Enclave for so long but it keeps getting put aside for newer books, I really need to read it especially since the second book is coming out. Great Pick!

  3. I’m not a big post-apocalyptic fan but I LOVED the Hunger Games so perhaps I’d love this series too. Thanks for sharing!

Thanks for stopping by my WoW earlier 🙂
